  • The favorite song of child rapists !

What a pervert art community !

  • I performed this song many years ago. Brilliant track. So much passion, and the many characters of the song make it so entertaining. The narrator, the father, the son, the Erlking. Just an amazing piece of music. Beautiful and terrifying.

  • I get nightmares because of 1:28

  • @Lollopops93

2:57 ff shows that this is a father raping its own son to death. What a terrible story. This is totally pervert ! How can Goethe be handled as famous writer, when he writes and has such dirty thoughts about child abuse in his head. I would refuse to sing such a pervert song. Do you understand the text completely?

  • 2:53

Best line of the poem. This guy reminds me of jack black.

  • Liszt did a good job with putting the piano part together.

  • Hallo wo bleiben die deutschen kommentare?

das ist ein deutsches gedicht ^^

  • This guy is the best Lied singer EVER! Enough said

  • Great musicians and fantastic music

    Wonderful to listen to this

  • The BEST rendition I've ever heard. Every measure is full in character and he really helps blend the text with the music!

Very young, Fischer-Dieskau!

    But doesn't voice change forever.

  • german is hard :S

  • This probably sounds terribly weird, but this song inspired me to start learning German.

  • I love the transition between the king and the father and son.

  • Friends of Schubert asked him to play this song...After he played it they asked if he could play it again...After the second time they said "Play it again!" and he couldn't because his fingers were fatigued :D ( True Story )

  • @relaxin001 Come on now, you don't honestly believe any genre is superior to classical now, do you?

  • It's not until "erreicht den Hof" that I realize I'm not breathing and gasp for air. This is amazing!

  • What a performer, blows me away:D

  • Good

  • Simplemente maravilloso.

  • 25 people didn't make the horse ride. . .

  • I think a lot of heavy metal artists drew on this for inspiration. This is pretty dark and fast so I think there's an argument that this partly laid the foundation for metal. The problem is you got intolerant douchebags like Gerstroncio

  • to everyone who's arguing the whole classical music over metal music...all i have to say is at first...there was only classical music, everything after is influenced by it...there are classical aspects in every single form of music LULCAEKZ ggs noobs

  • this song gives me the chills near the end.

  • How did it take him 18 minutes to compose THIS?! God damnit Schubert stop being so awesome.

  • Lovely singing. TY MeetTheNeet for posting.

  • Dannnng, this gives me chills - he's so wonderful at being terrifying when he's 'playing' the Erlkonig.

  • great vid! thanks for uploading

  • Erlking = Slenderman

  • The facial expressions explain everythingLD

  • i love wat this song/poem means it should be made into a feature film

  • I remember my mum would play this song on the radio, and it would scare the bejesus out of me...

  • He's not a singer, he's an actor- look at the different expressions for the different characters! Brilliant...

  • @muulka Actually, he's both. His technique is just as beautifully done. His voice has even more expression than his face.

  • Schubert was 18 when he wrote this,.. humility is not an unnecessary luxury....

  • reminds me of the lessons of art history ^^

  • I wish Germany was this classy nowadays

  • Here for the music 4 final!

  • イイネb

  • his erlking face is so creepy but appropriate.

  • Go all listening final! WE ARE THE ELITE!

  • wow! who's the pianist????

  • ... notice that the accompanist, Gerald Moore, plays something very rhythmic ... something that IS NOT IN THE SCORE ... Gerald was a GREAT !

  • Schubert was such a genuis.

I love all the music composed by Schubert.

  • @057gnb3316sef6 Mhmm... you say you love ALL his music... he composed some shit too... But his masterpieces are ones of the best ever composed !

  • The author of the blog at "Kashu-do: The Way of the Singer" wrote that he thinks Dieskau's passagi indicate a tenor who sang as a baritone with easy high range. Does anyone have any opinion on this? I really am not sure.

  • Hear Erlkönig with Svanholm!!!

  • @vonFalkenstein77

Actually, this music orginates in the Romantic period, not the Classical.

  • @orangedragan If you've had musichistory in say Norway, like I've had Classical music means both baroque, renaissance, romantic etc. We refer to classicism in music as wienerclassicism, because the musical center at the time was Vienna.

  • @vonFalkenstein77

    Tange ;)

  • @vonFalkenstein77 So, it wasn't the fact that you didn't simply express your opinion, but went back to personally attack the poster, lambasting their heritage and culture? Oh, I'm sure it's just because you had a difference of opinion and not because you failed to express it like a rational human being.

  • @vonFalkenstein77 Good for Richard Strauss. Now, how is that relevant? Oh, right. That's his opinion, which he is entitled to, just like yours. The problem here was as follows: you were an obnoxious prat about it.

  • Whao ! We want to sleep after hear that a child died in his fathers arm's

  • @vonFalkenstein77

Whatever makes you feel better. ;)

  • @vonFalkenstein77 Your assertion does not, in any way, negate the ridiculously overbearing nature of your behavior, including this remark. I'm not particularly fond of metal, but that doesn't mean people can't enjoy it and perceive some value in it. Rammstein is metal and they frequently draw from Goethe. Dalai Lama parallels Erlkönig, even. You are a self-righteous blowhard.

  • @vonFalkenstein77

Haha I like how you took the time to look at what country I'm from, then double post. You're trying too hard to look smart, maybe you should get rid of your prejudice before you rant about "art." I didn't even criticize, or "tell you anything" about your "great classical composers," nor did I claim to be more intelligent than anyone. I simply pointed out your dismissive comment about metal. But I agree, you are indeed VERY sorry.

  • @CottlestonCottleston I wholly agree with you. vonFalkenstein77 has only succeeded in sounding like an elitist buffoon. Their immediate assumption of your idiocy and lack of culture is deliciously pompous and ironically makes them appear as stupid, because this IS a matter of knowing better but behaving foolishly anyway, as they accused you of being.

  • i think

    son loves his father

and father's love to his son is truth

    but...son=der erlkönig

  • @lostota sorry, the son is sick, and the erlkonig is the goblin king who is trying to take the boy, but is merely an illusion, so the father does not understand what is happening to the boy, and the boy is taken by the goblin king, resulting in death

  • Es ist wirklich wunderbar.

  • @vonFalkenstein77

It's a shame to see someone mention "art" and call metal "just noisy."

  • @vonFalkenstein77 Also, don't forget that many heavy metal musicians were influenced by classical musicians - Bach and Vivaldi seem to be the most common. Go see if you can find the tribute album version of Ozzy - Mr. Crowley or Suicide Solution and listen to the guitarist Randy Rhoads. You can hear the classical influence in his playing. It is too bad he died before fully blossoming as a musician.

  • @vonFalkenstein77 Well, just remember where metal came from. If you track metal back far enough, there is a parallel of specific elements to classical. Language is similar; for example, the parallels between Greek and English or the relationship between German and English as both "Germanic languages." In metal, harmony, chord structure, and even instruments being played are borrowed from the classical orchestra (keyboard, guitar, drums, bass, vocals).

  • @MilkAndFrosties You can't really name a band stating they "ripped this off" considering the entire genre, starting from it's roots were influenced by this kind of music.

  • Best Ending EVER! you just dont expect that

  • One of the most beautiful german poems. My Grandma and her genereation had to learn it by heart and I did too, because it's great :3

  • Is it Gerald Moore playing the piano?

  • omg This Lied is so creepy!!!!! please check out the English translation

  • amazing

  • Right hand 16th note torture.

  • @dizzack Triplets actually, but yes.

  • Amazing!

  • Less views than Von Mutter's video? Where's the ears?

  • This scared the crap out of me...Listening to it while reading the translation as a kid...

I was afraid to walk by the creek by myself from then on...

  • das is sehr gut!!!

  • hey, its vintage F-D. Who contests he was the most beautiful supple baritone of the 20th c.?

  • Good night ^^

  • breathtaking, it's the most dramatic thing I have ever listen to

  • OWNS. Definitely metal. An impassioned performance. Notice the vocalist face changing when singing each parts. It is as if he is mentally the erlkoning, then the child, then the father.

  • @dhtmlkitchen I thought I was the only one who thought of this as extremely heavy metal.

  • @Puertoricansniper yes, yes it was :D wonder if Moonspell will consider doing their own version (Portuguese or English) that would be sweet. @MeetTheNeet, Thanks for posting! I missed this in my Modern Music Appreciation class last week! :D

  • @Puertoricansniper ALL HAIL RIFF #1!!!!!!

  • @Puertoricansniper

You should listen to some Baroque music, there is tons of metal going on there(ie. Vivaldi, Bach)

  • @FFKpar Dude, this is romantic era Lied. over 100 later than the Baroque era.

  • @RelayerDuos I know, you misunderstand what I said. I was saying that if he thinks this is metal, he has to listen to some baroque music, which is way more metal sounding than this.

  • @FFKpar I completely agree. I think this has the tone and intensity of good metal, but baroque is far more similar in construction. The ornamentation in both genres is insane.

  • @Puertoricansniper

    I agree this is amazing

  • @Puertoricansniper and some people think Metal has nothing to do with "Classical" music

  • @Puertoricansniper stop comparing metal to Classical. Classical is BETTER than metal. I just hate to break it to you. Metal copied Cassical music in many aspects.

  • @TheDavid2222 No shit Sherlock. Of course Metal copied classical. It's one of metal's biggest influences to date. Ever heard of prog. metal bands that use a lot of classical quirks? Symphony X being one example. Anyway, we all know that there are classical aspects in metal, but that doesn't mean you can't compare the two or you can say that one is better. They can both be appreciated equally. THAT is the way good musicians and educated people see it.

  • @TheDavid2222 if you had any musical education at all you would know that classical music is better. I have heard of nearly every metal subgenre in existence. Metal is better than most popular music, but is much worse than nearly all forms of art music. Educated people have refined taste, unlike you.

  • @TheDavid2222

miseducation is worser than no education

  • @Puertoricansniper lol, you better listen to bachs brandemburg concerto no 5. fucking solo is true baroque metal

  • @Puertoricansniper

    nnnnnnnnn

  • @Puertoricansniper lmao...it really is isn't it

  • @Gerstroncio Two things: 1. Are you Schubert? Would you know what he thinks? No. So don't pretend to. 2. You are trying to regulate the internet of all places. It doesn't work. Your farts don't smell that great, so take your head out of your butt and let people enjoy music however they like. It isn't up to the music god, Gerstroncio, to interpret music for others.

  • @Stringy007 You are very correct on this one. The thing is, if one were to transpose this onto guitars, sing the vocals in a less operatic style and add a drum section this certainly could be metal. Also, I'm wondering why the dude put 'metal' and 'thumbs up' in quotes. Are they somehow ironic?

  • @Stringy007

Anybody here can say how he finds or interprets this music! That is how one can learn and judge.

In my view the professional university singer education is dominated by ultra conservative idiots who destruct any lovely or natural expressive human voice and creating inhuman voice monsters with such inhuman exercices. Only similar perverted listeners with repressive ultra conservative education, those of the sort "only what is hard and difficult is art" can stand this.

  • @Gerstroncio BEFORE it became all about being cool and fitting in and formulated, Metal was VERY similar to classical! There are videos of how similar VH's improvs are extremely similar to Bach's. Do your research, please!

  • @dappling484 That's not what metal has become at all, its not about fitting in, there are so many artists making truly incredible music, way after VH. In fact, I am currently making a metal version of this song. check out Animals as Leaders if you want some really original brand new metal

  • @Gerstroncio yo fagot du bist zurückgeblieben was ist los mit metal

  • Creepy poem. Love the piano.

  • Mark Tatlow!!!

  • I love how old audio changes the key of everything.

  • @plantsax1210 It doesn't, this is probably played in F minor for the baritone voice, a tone down from the original :P

  • @rossyxan it is played in f. g is the right tonality.

  • @rossyxan it is played in f. g is the right tonality. Or at least the original one in the four different versions

  • @PrinsTan

    you only know 4 versions?

  • It is a great singing voice! The song’s music class at school music lessons. The piano was a wonderful sound!

    Erlkonig are pretty good songs!

  • fuck this bitch

  • THIS ONE IT'S GOOD FOR CLASS

  • Awesome:)

  • The point of course is that English is the sole truly international language and are we not so fortuante that this is understood by almost all - else, if each somehow felt out of an inferiority complex the need to promote their native tongue to communicate in an ionternational setting, god help us.

  • @sorim1967 You're an ignorant moron, and if English is so international, why is your grammar worse than my four-year olds?

  • "If you don't know German, you should check out the lyrics in English. "

  • All communicated with the eyes and with facial expression. No extravagent and distracting gestures. Would that some younger singers would follow this good example. Think Gerald Moore (that poor pianist!) deserves a credit too.

  • Dude, its not all that hard to play, but to do triplets through the whole thing cramps my hand up through the whole thing...

  • That poor pianist.

  • I don't care if Goethe never approved of his poem being made into song: this is excellent.

  • @bannable Acutally later (after Schubert died) he began to appreciate it....took him long enough.

  • @bannable He probably didn't approve because he was a narcissistic dick.

  • i put up an english version with lyrics if it helps anyone? :)

  • five billion stars to this video, schubert was a genious!!

  • Love this!!!

  • I LOVE his facial expressions and how the transitions between them are abrupt. He has a beautiful voice :)

  • I love Franz Schubert. He is one of the best!

  • wonderful

  • sad story :( gotta love the Romantic Era though :D

  • is that the guy from full metal jacket???

  • @GrimKvltTroll

No, he would have kicked the sergeant

  • I loved this from the first time i heard it.

  • gives me goosebumps :)

  • He is freaking amazing!!!!

  • the Ekling part is by far the creepiest thing i've ever heard. It is sweatily demonic.

  • Bravo!

  • @randapanda2009 which obviously explains the child's drastic, last gasp calls for help, as the Erlkonig becomes angry, instead of persuasive and takes the child for his own.

These movements are made even more powerful by Fischer-Dieskau's amazing talent in switching so quickly between the crazed happiness of the Erlkonig and the pleas of the child.

A terrible story, yet one of the most thecnically brilliant lieder's ever written.

  • The video of choice for my music teacher. He pulled up youtube to show us this very video.

  • We took this up in music class.

The exact same piece. Both the pianist/piano piece and singer did well.

    Bravo!

  • Interesting song. INteresting that he was actually in an American POW camp during WWII and sang to other german soldiers

  • One of the great performances on Youtube. If we could only go back in time, and have them perform requests.

  • DFD at his very best. Schubert does more in 4 minutes than Wager can in 4 hours!

  • He is a singer and an actor! <3

  • truly great performance, so dramatic!

  • Absolutely love this piece

  • @Joshua17404930 This song, in and of itself, is not hilarious. I also find it powerful and moving, even. However, I personally find that large men bellowing in deep, vibrato-rich German (while simultaneously gesticulating and making strange faces) to be very funny. So perhaps I should have stated, this *performance* is hilarious.

  • This video was good! I loved his facial expressions for each of the parts during the piece. This performer really got into the different parts of the piece, the Narrator, the Son, the Father and of course the Erlking! Loved this piece & THANK YOU for sharing! I actually used this for my Music Appreciation class and all of those who disliked it just do not have a good taste for good quality music!

  • ----THIS WAS MY GIRLFRIEND MAKING THIS POST.

  • i really don't know why have 15 people dislike this vid????? are they justin bieber?

  • i really don't know why have 15 people dislike this vid?????

  • *sigh* im only listening to this b/c i have to for a music test at school other than that the only german music i like is by Tokio Hotel <3333 They r the hottest german boy band ever!!!!! x]

  • @MacGirvan The last words are actually "war tot"

  • i´m happy there are at least some people who´re interessted in our culture and history besides hitler and his liability.Thank you. Apart from that great performence

  • @mauriceriegler Well said

  • @mauriceriegler

this song text is worse than Hitler ! Since Erlkings do not exist, except in phantasies of rapists as dust that shall psychologically cover how a father rapes his son to death.

Goethe the German thinker? ... perverted, useless outdated

  • The last word is kaput.

  • @MacGirvan It was? well i didn't hear it.....

  • @merekandgavin56789 He sung it very quietly.

  • That was an amazing performance! I was assigned to memorize this in high school 10 years ago and I can still recite it. But it's good to hear some better pronunciation than what I can do.
