Yes,i assume we all try to be free in our own way but act so awkardly in our attempts to be it.What can we do but to accept our failures and try to do our best and learn from them?

if you have listen to joe cocker sang bird on a wire it has the same soulful sound of the manhattans sanging kiss and say goodbye or david allan coe sanging she finally crossed over love's cheatin line and you still thank someone does b.o.w better you DON'T KNOW SHIT ABOUT MUSIC
@18212dog Have to disagree with you. Jimmy and Toby have great voice and I could love their singing but, I'm afraid that in my opinion this song does not belong in their repertoire. This needs to be sung sad and hounting.
Few men can truly cover Cohn - the haunting rough texture and low note of the voice, packed with so much emotion, so much regret and remorse; Bob Dylan is one of the few - but this is truly beautiful. Just as in "Hurt", Johnny 's voice radiates the sorrow and regret needed to bring the song to life, make it real - His grating, honest sound gives it hte right texture - as with many Cohen songs, a nice voice just doesn't work. Shame he never did "Hallelujah".
I love this song so much.He sings it with that beautiful raw voice of his.Dang,Johnny would have loved to have met you but thankfully you left us with your gift-your voice and your honesty.I'll see you in Heaven!
First time I have head Johnny sing this....funny it really seems like it could be one of his originals--it's really very Johnny Cash! RIP Brother John.
I am Australian and I love songs that tell a story of sort, When I listen to legendary songwriters / singers, like Cash, Kristofferson, Hall and Nelson, just to name a few geniuses with words, I relate as much as possible in my mind, to my country, I wonder how many Americans listened to our legends, the late Slim Dusty and John Williamson. They tell of our land but the words could relate to America too. God Bless America Again (e.g;), So easy to close your eyes and imagine it to be Australia
Johnny Cash, what a talent he was, singer and songwriter. Loved his film Walk The Line but it didn't depict the man he really was over the last 30 years of his life. Here was a man who had given so much to the industry and left behind a legacy. He helped so many to get where they are today, just ask Merle (Haggard).
I would love to see a sequel, where he wasn't a drug nut, guilty as hell, yes, but he was so much mightier than the image the film left with. There will never be another JR Cash
Like that he sings Cohen, Dylan, Waits. He knew what great lyrics were. Love Johnny Cash's body of work, great American artists, but think he himself wrote lyrics of this quality only a few times. Big River and Man Comes Around among them. Still, more than most have done. .
brelfan, I am glad you liked Johnny Cash's version of Bird On A Wire, but I was amazed at the comment that he only wrote a couple of quality songs which you name two of. I can tell you he was the writer of no less than 30 other great songs, none any better than Man In Black, the words are riveting and then there is What Is Truth and Flesh And Blood. I could go on and on. Make no mistake JR Cash was a master songwriter. He had many an equal but very few better. His works will be revered forever
@luvagoodsongyeah Oh, no. If we had to choose 5 artists to represent the US in the 20th Century, Johnny Cash would be second to Ray Charles, in my opinion. Still, think Cash reached the quality of Cohen or Dylan's ability with lyrics only a few times. Still, that's more than... well, puts him in a class with Don McLean, Paul Simon... perhaps nobody else.
There's a great version of this song on his box set American Recordings: Unearthed. It's a live performance with orchestra accompanying him. It sounds really nice, and features Johnny cracking a few jokes.
thank you for posting this on youtube johnny cash has always helpt me in his songs in my life and to here this song is lovey thank you so much for puting this on good good work on you thank you long live johnny cash we will always miss you r.i.p
I've been looking too, but I haven't seen any yet. It would be something to hear Johnny Cash singing something like If It Be Your Will or I'm Your Man. I own the dvd this is from and I watch this clip regularly. I love it so much.
