even the image stabilization can't be calculated because if you are holding with your hand...its subjective....you might have been morte shaky with one than the other...as well as shaky at diff times suring the recording, etc

Regarding the IS of 'all the other canons', it's important to remember the new Canon S11 and S21 have all new IS. All the prior Canon models supposedly had IS but I could never tell any improvement when I turned it on. I spent many hours comparing the XR500v, CX520 and the S11 and opted for the S11 and was glad I did. I found that both the 500v and 520v cameras 'warp or bow' the image when the camera is moved. I think it was part of the Sony IS.

@rayman4449 It's also important to note that the S11 has an 6mp effective pixel count and the sony's only have 4mp. This is why the video from the S11 has alot better detail and looks so sharp. As far as 'low light' performance, the Canon S11 automatically switches to 30p (from 60i) to maintain video quality and at that frame rate actually has better low light performance than the Sony.

I hate Sony Support. I also hate how they try to monopolize everything they make thinking they're the only ones who can build those things so all their products are ridiculously overpriced. Good products, but way overpriced.

The sony cx520 is not with the ACTIVE STEADY SHOT ON. I have one, and it is much better.

DO NOT COMPARE IMAGE QUALITY BY WATHCING THESE MOVIES. you do not know the settings and compression etc.

It is ONLY intended to show STABILIZATION. Please do not post regarding colours and quality because it is totally STUPID.

Criticaltinker, remember that Canon has the best HD lens quality (which is why Sony stopped Zeiss lens and started making their own lately, to try to catch the wagoon), the best bitrate with 24Mbit, is the only one to offer 24fps (or 25fps for PAL) cinema mode...

Heck you do not know even know what settings were used, framerates, colour settings (Canon has vivid, but may not have been used), what it was compressed to for Youtube, how it was deinterlaced (if filmed in 25fps and still kept the deinterlaced setting for Canon movie rendering it lowers quality), etc...

If you want to check movies, try it for real in a shop, or eventually spend some time watching and downloading movies on VIMEO.

I want to buy the best if i'm going to make an investment in one...the most important thing to me is HD vid quality and image stabilization and if Panasonic has the most MP..14.2...then isn't that the best?

sony wins!!! more stable image, sharp and vivid image. Plus it has slow motion... and can take up to 8.3MP stills while shooting videos.... that's cool

Thats what I was thinking onxtcz this are the two cams Im debating on. Im really just looking for the best picture. Im not looking to be a pro. So does the 24 mbit rate really matter ? then the sonys 16mbit rate thanks

@DEEJAYDAVEDENALI Had a chance to try out both, ended up buying the Sony HDR-XR500v. Why? The steadyshot blows all Canons I've tried out of the water. Built in GPS is actually useful for geotagging photos. Sony has a feature that will automatically take still photos as you record when it detects a smile.

I just bought one of the S11s without being able to try the IS first and I have been very pleasantly surprised at how good it is. The Sony does have an excellent IS and the CX has even better than the old XR but the Sony's IS warps the image where the Canon does not. Whether or not this matters to the average user, maybe not I don't know. If you're on the fence and really want the S11 but are unsure about the IS, I'd say go for it. You should be very happy.

You should switch it to "active" then it works much better.

does canon has very steady shot as sony does.. in the video dosent feel much but when u look at other video of sony steady shot its almost like using a steady cam.. i think steady shot 3 way is not totally active here..
