Wilson's apology is that he has been very clear in stating that he did so at the request of the Republican Leadership -- and is now using his bad behavior to raise money for his campaign. Not a very genuine apology in my book. As for free speech, as a US Congressman he has ample opportunity to speak his mind on a wide variety of media platforms. Interrupting The President of the United States while he was speaking to the Congress was bad manners at its worst.
If he can use a rude outburst to raise money, that's a sad reflection of the contributors. And I concede that this wasn't a first amendment issue. He should have been a composed statesman and saved the outburst for an appropriate setting. Still gonna stick to "no lashes or jail time," though. If we start beating and imprisoning for bad manners, the all ready overcrowded jails would have more in than out.

actually, he may have been 'born that way'. I'm from South Carolina, where people like him are born having a "pedigree". He's from very old southern money. The same people who refuse to be "talked down to" by an "uppity negro" like Obama.
Lindsay Graham dropped this coded message into his comment about Wilson - Graham denounced Wilson, but was incensed at Obama's "tone". (again, southern tradition of 'not being talked down to' by the 'uppity negro'.) This is still a seriously racist state.

I think Sen. Graham was seriously embarrassed last night by his fellow South Carolinian and was looking for an excuse for WIlson's bad behavior. Happily, I've seen other republicans, like John McCain, let Wilson have it.
Everyone I know from South Carolina (quite a few actually) are among the nicest people I've ever met.
