@ArmyDudeization Ram Jet was a killer for head to head action, it would slide under the other car and launch it into the air. i had another that was similar, but it had 2 passenger pods , like a popsicle. cant remember the name
I had all these and ended up destroying them all. The pull chord handle would break and we'd use vice grip plyers. I haf the evel lneivel as well and then I eventually built ramps and jumped things on my bike. No helmet...no parents...no "playdates"...just me and the neighbor kids going full titlt til 5:30 and dinner.
these were some of the funnest toys ever! i had one of the metallic painted ones that came out later, and if memory serves there were even varieties that sparked. damn i miss these things, and being a kid.
Sweet!! At 46, I still have the one I had as a kid. The pull thing wore out, but I still played with it forever. It was kind of a double-turbo looking thing. Great old commercial. Thanks for posting. The 70's FOREVER!!! (There weren't any iPods around yet though....)
I had a couple of these babies when I was a kid. Awesome toys. You could run them into a wall (or each other) a hundred times and they didn't break. My friends and I put a couple drops of 3-in-1 oil in the center wheel shaft and boosted their speed and distance quite a bit.
The kids in the commercial are holding them wrong. If you revved up that wheel and let it spin in the plam of your hand, you'd get a friction burn (trust me on this).
had ram jet and hustlin' hoss too, too bad, these were awesome yet simple toys, wish they still made them (or do they - so many classic toys coming back these days) OMG I love the sound, totally forgot they made that sound !! WWWWWWIIIIIIRRRRZZZZZZZZZZZ - The cars would survive to today, but the zip handle would break and wear out, the teeth on it would strip.....
I had a scar on my forearm for almost a year from putting the tire going 10,000 RPM on it and doing a burnout on my arm... YEAH
all right, who else can admit pulling the rip cord and then putting the wheel by your hair and whammo, you go running to mom to have her cut your hair from the wheel! Yea, like Im the only one who had done that
Does anybody remember the plastic engine block used for storing these. it to was really cool I had many of these and when you ripped all the strips and place in the block it would scream Bad Ass.
There were alot of cars and varations, including sets with drag chutes.
The problem is that these were big cars, so you really needed alot of room to get them going, like the street, which was not particularly safe!
I passed on them until they brought out the Smash Up Derby set--I got the original with the 50s cars, Ford and Chevy. These you could set up in a much smaller area. They especially looked good crashing if you pushed them a little when you let them go. They were tough too!
Since the only one I thought that looked natural was Ram Jet that was the first one I got.
I eventually got Black Widow and Deuces Wild however Deuces Wild looked ridiculous as it sped along with tires that never spun, of course Ram Jet had a huge advantage in this area since its highly visible "Power Wheel" was infact its "real" tire and not plastic molded fake wheels
I didn't have a full size SSP, but I had a mini Laker special put out by Citgo gas stations in the early 70s. I remember I brought it to Show and Tell in kindergarten one day and every boy in my class was green w/ envy and they all wanted to be my friend that day so I'd let them have a turn!
The Black Widow was quickly renamed Black Jack for some reason, but the name "Widow" remained in many ads. It was always my favorite too, though I also loved the cool chrome Tigera.
I never saw a Deuces Wild aside from this commercial until a collector recently sent me a photo. Now I'm collecting myself, and I find myself fond of the "classic" cars (Copper Cart, Mod Mercer, Deuces Wild, Tee-Riffic), but Black Jack remains my one true fave.
I had the Laker Special - it was dark purple, I seem to remember. And fuck me if that thing didn't absolutely haul arse!!
My uncle brought it back from a trip to Canada in the early '70s, making me possibly the only kid in communist Czechoslovakia to have one of these things.
Thats it. I used to park em then run my Evil Knievel stunt cycle into em. And yes My Dad would get mad when I hit his RCA wood console record/8 Track player.
My brother and destroyed a lot of wood work in the house with those,,,,My mother was always about ready to crack when we got them out. They were a great toy and had a blast with them.
Today a toy like this would be banned due to lead paint & choking hazards. Ummm, hello! The reason (well, 1 of them anyway) they used lead based paint in child toys to begin with, is because lead tastes sweet! It gives the paint/tiny toy parts a naturally sweet flavor when they are in the mouth, duh! LOL {:o)~
Doesn't the RAM-JET look a little like the car THE AMBIGUOUSLY GAY DUO drive?
