Hats off to you Kurt!! This has rekindled my gliding life, last time I went up was 1985 at R.A.F. Scampton, Lincolnshie, England in a Sedburgh with just a windscreen, lapbelts and no canopy!! Winch launch then up to 5,000ft managed to pull a near perfect loop. Thing was, my right seat guy had his two year old strapped to his knees!! Congrats on a fabulous video. Andy
This has become my absolute favourite video. Your Jazz track is SO cool and evokes in me that awesome peaceful emotion that flying a glider has always brought to me. And your son - I assume it is your son - with his childhood delight at having been up there must take everyone who sees this back to that first wonder we experienced at the miracle of flight - That delight that something that we had built or flown, helped with, or just stood and watched was now UP THERE. Thanks. :-) Paul
Glad to hear you enjoyed it so much. The club did the same event this year (2007), but I couldn't make it.
FWIW, that isn't my son...it's the child of the guy he's sitting next to in the plane. But I can tell you his exuberance was a wonderful thing to witness.
The excitement of the kid at the end is priceless, I think the flying bug has bitten once again. What was the self launching wing about halfway through the vid?
The great thing to know about the kid is that it was his Dad he was seated with, who is an extraordinary pilot, and this was his first glider flight with his son.
Great video! I wish I could fly a glider or at least be a passenger some time :-) Can you please tell me who played this version of blackbird? It sounds beautiful!
I´m from germany, too. first of all, I want to ask what kind of glider the first one is??? Never seen it before? looks crazy. two people on the backseat..... ha ha. and the landings are looking crazy, too. well so I stay with my good old german planes....
But very interesting to see, how soaring looks like in another country...
That is a Schweitzer 2-32, which are popular for giving rides because of the comparatively-large cockpit. If you remove the stick from the back seat, you can fit two passengers. I think they are 1960's era aircraft.
The song Blackbird is about a white bird crashing into tar. Nice plane
