Westies were actually bred from Cairn Terriers when Scottish Col. Edward Donald Malcom accidently shot his red Cairn Terrier on a hunting trip. He then bred white Cairns so they would be more visible. Eventually, when other terrier mixes were introduced, the Westie became what it is today.
I have a Westie and a Cairn, they are the best dogs! My Cairn was red and black when he was a puppy but he has slowly become blonde. He and my westie are almost the same color now!
Cairn terriers are all sorts of colors. They also change colors as they age. Mine started off black and turned wheaten, but our second one started off wheaten and turned reddish. They also often have blacker fur on their ears and tail.
Cairn Terriers can be close to white. my cairn right now has grey hairs which almost look white, but when he was younger he had blonde/cream colored fur. soo yeah, this is a cairn terrier. v_v;
lol my cairn terrier just turned 25 in dog years... we shaved him... and the next dog i get will be another cairn terrier because it just wouldnt be the same with a different type of dog... and my cairn has a special spot in my heart

Silly that people would say this isn't a cairn - looks just like my Shandy, who is a cream brindle, and was gray/brownish when she was little. Now she looks like Terry's twin. Cairns change colors all the time, (from year to year, even...) I have several, and they have each changed dramatically in appearance. My cairns play like this with kittens, and our cats, but my puppies are raised with the cats in the home from day 1. They don't let the neighbors' cats into our yard, however.
i love all dogs but a cairn is a singular creature. they are the most expressive, loving and soulful companions. to know one is to love all. i'll never be without a cairn.

@JewishVegan Agreed, my cairn terrier lightened up with age too but people assume a white/white-ish cairn terrier must be a westie or a mix but that's not the case. Of course it seems normal that a cairn terrier could come in this color, especially since westies came from the breeding of white cairns and scotties.
It's not just the white color that differentiates a Westie from a Cairn. Anyone that has owned both (as I have) know that a Wesite is also a heavier, broasder, and more muscular dog.
If you like all that terriers are, you can't go wrong with either one.
i once had a cairn terrier who had a phantom pregnancy for a litter of kittens. she was the best dog ever. she produced milk for the kittnes and let them nurse off of her when the mom cat was away. they are probably the most amazing breed i have ever met.

In 1916, the colors were separated into two distinct breeds with the white being known as the West Highland White Terrier and the darks becoming the Cairn. No more breeding them together. The two standards say Westies can only be white...Cairns can be any color but white, pure black like the Scottish Terrier or brown & black like Norwich Terriers.
Now, that's probably WAY more than you ever wanted to know about the breed! lol

ilovemichealcera is right...the Westie was originally a white Cairn. They were called Highland Terriers. Most of the Scottish crofters would drown the whites ones when they were born because they weren't dark. Eventually, they realized they could see the white ones in the dusk better than the brindles which kept them from accidentally shooting their dog when bolting vermin out of the rock piles, or cairns.
boy, can you see the love these animals have for each other! This Cairn reminds me so much of our "Bozo" that had be be put to sleep over a year ago because of health issues....I still have my cat, she is about 11 years old now, our cairn was about 10 when she became very ill. The only difference in a Cairn and a Westie is the colors. The Westie is white and only white, not other color. A Cairn is any color combination other then white, most of which I have seen have been brindle. Other then that both are so energetic, loving, and very intelligent.

Mine has changed colors from brown to blonde to very whitish blonde back to a dirty blonde/brown. I think most are kind a neutral brown, though.

White Cairns do appear in litters once in a while, but are considered 'bad' examples of the breed and would not be bred again.
Of course, the Westhighland White terrier breed is the result of these unwanted white Cairns.

cairnes are made from westies in first place. by mixing pigment of oders dogs, so developled all diff colour combinations in cairnes.
