i guess bands that are this good shouldnt evolve? is that what you`re saying? They still kick ass just say them with The Chariot...still bad ass PTDub forever
The song's called "Grain of Salt." It's from their first album, Distance Only Makes the Heart Grow Fonder, before Jeff was the vocalist. Also, the quote is "I don't know how it feels? You think you're the only person on earth who wakes up every morning wishing they were someone else?" and it's from the 1995 movie "Angus."
seriously this is what i see the progression of punk as (put simply): 75'-85'=classic punk, 86'-95'=everything from harcore-punk to ska to plain old mxpx punk, 96'-2000= Blink-182 haha, 2000-04=hardcore (sometimes blended w/metal/screamo) ie PTW/glassjaw, 2005-present= BITCH punk
Yeah, I think 2005 was the year it really turned. Early '05 was when MySpace rose to fame, and thus when bands like Underoath and From First to Last (and now bands like Drop Dead, Gorgeous and Bring Me the Horizon) became the new "hardcore." There are hardcore/punk songs dating back to the 90's talking about "scene kids" with tight pants, studded belts and black hair, but it was definitely never as much of an epidemic as it is nowadays.
Hell yeah this was when mainstream hardcore was at its finest. PTW has its own bands it owes itself to but shit these days is only about black hair and tight pants its rediculous. know your fucking roots and stop giving the game up (you know who im talking to bitch)!
I'd personally like to say that I have a heart for this band for my lifetime, they saved my life by introducing me to this scene I've become a part of, and I'll never forget their contribution; I don't think anyone will. The little FL band that could. :]
It's not hardcore anymore, but it's far from drained, the passion is still present... listen to songs like Letter Thing or The Notches That Create Your Headboard... as far as I can tell, that's about as ferocious and passionate and heart-wrenching as they've ever been. You Will Not Be Welcomed brings me to tears just as easily as Slice Paper Wrists did back in the day... cont.
To say their new stuff is drained of life is horrible... I've been listening to PTW for a long long fucking time, they used to play hole-in-the-wall shows in my little town of Vero Beach, FL to 15 kids... they've come so far... to question their art is not only monotony but ignorance.
I love how he doesn't hold anything back with his vocals. A lot of bands that try and immitate PTW today lack the raw emotion and the vocalists have a manufactured scream... annoying.
Saw these guys at my first show which was appropriate as they were the first metalcore/hardcore I've ever heard and immediately was hooked. Show was at Fat Cat in Springfield MA (RIP) I think it was dring this tour as tear from the red was just releasing and no one really heard it yet. I started a chant for Grain of Salt but they didn't have enough time. amazing show though, American Nightmare, From Autumn to Ashes, and a whole bunch more big names.
i wish i knew what year this is from. cause they play a song from Tear From The Red in there too. but it seems like this may have been right after Absence Makes The Heart'. i love this album, deffinately in the top 10 of all time. i saw them more than a year ago and they played some new shit which was drained of life. i love everything up till now though.
This album shits on the new album - some of You Come Before You are good too. Most of these songs are classics and I agree with you his voice is much more gruff as time goes on. Amazing guitar on this album.
Is that Jeff doing vocals? Man he's so skinny compared to the massive superman that lumbered on the "Apathy is a Cold Body" video. He still sounded great, though, as did the rest of the band.
Yeah, I had the same reaction when I first saw this video on VHS like 4 years ago in 2003. I saw them live a few nights later and had to check online to see that they hadn't got a new vocalist, because I didn't recognize him at all in person on stage compared to him in this video. His vocals have completely changed since then, too; his screams are like 8 octaves lower now than they were back in '99/'00/'01.
Oh yeah. Not to mention his newfound talent for singing. One of the few vocalists I've heard from this genre who can both sing and scream with conviction.
Nah, it's "A Wish for Wings That Work." That's what it's labeled as on the back of the CD, anyway. The title is taken from the children's book of the same name that came out in the early nineties. Plus, the song has the lyrics "Could this sky open up and accept this tortured soul, but my wings have yet to work, but my wings have yet to work" so I assume that's why they used the title.
dOOd these old school videocameras record hella good sound! most new videos of live bands are recorded on people's digital cameras and sound like shit. excellent post lanvids! see PTW on warped tour 07
I got the new album 8) It is not the hardcopy though... I will buy that as soon as it comes out though! I love the new stuff I will say that! But agreed, The Opposite Of December is so fucking good!
Most amazing set list in PTW history, don't get me wrong I still like the new stuff, but this definitely is their golden age of "hardcore" I REMEMBER THE DAY, THE SUN WENT OUT!
Poison The Well are so bloody hectic live... I am so wishing they come back to Australia... that would seriously make me the happiest man alive. Such powerful lyrics in every song they create. Awesome band, awesome show.
