@davyhboro It's called an e-bow. It's an electronic device that "bows" the strings using an electromagnetic field. It basically feeds back upon itself but in a more controlled way than through an amp feedback loop. There is a little notch on the bottom that the string sits in and the magnets in the e-bow cause the string to vibrate. The sound is controlled by raising or lowering the e-bow.

I've been a fan since the late 1980s, but I wasn't able to see them for the first time until October 2010 in Chicage. Going into it, I was concerned that maybe I was a decade late in seeing them at their best. I'm an idiot. They were unvelievable. I can't scrounge up enough superlatives to describe the show.

I have to agree. This song has always been my favorite, and by far I believe their best. Seven, as an entire album, in my opinion, reflects James at the pinnacle in their art. While there were glimpses over the years, nothing collectively stood up to this. of course its just a personal opinion:)

Plus the cinematography using an occaisional hand held cams from the crowd angles of the band with rougher edged clarity gives us all a taste of perhaps being there that night...

I am an average musician at best, and their music is very easy to play, but it is so damn good that it actually provides those rare moments in playing an instrument during which you move between hearing the music and feeling the music. I do not want to get nostalgic, but I have always believed that this band was the most under-rated band of the last 25 years. And I'm not even from England, much less Manchester.
