Being a musician who enjoys all stringed instruments. I would have to say that i prefer a bass over a guitar. With a bass you can play three parts, neutral rythym. Vocal accomp, and dynamic solos, all of which can be harnessed by a seasoned bassist. Guitarists are incapable of holding a song together via rythym, nor can they provide accompinament to the singer, it just drowns them out. Johnny winter is the only guitarist ive heard who can do it all. And he never sings on a high note.

Call me old skool if you want, but many of these current "lead guitarists with basses" are more flash and speed then what the instrument is intended for. I firmly believe the bassist that really should get the most credit for great bass playing is Chris Squire of YES. He took the bass and moved it from the back of the band to the front, yet still maintained it's purpose as a percussive, yet melodic compliment to the drummer. He not only provided wow but also a foundation under their songs.

You're absolutely right 109!, Chris Squire is a trademark for sure, Billy Sheehan can play anything, but it's like you said, "flash and speed". Another "not less important" bassists to me are John Deacon from Queen and Geezer Butler from Black Sabbath, also good ones, but there are even more, the list would not end at all lol.

@109ace Sheehan also focuses mainly on rhythm within the workings of a band, but when it comes time for a solo, he will rip some shit up, and I don't disagree with you about being old school, the basses main job is to shake the floor, make the room your sound board, but there's nothing wrong with being able to shred in addition to that all-important job, just listen to Sheehan's work in Mr. Big or other bands, and you'll hear that he was able to keep the bass grove in addition to rocking out.
@109ace This is a bass solo, not a song, so yeah, of course it's flashy. Would you like to see a guitar solo where the guys just doing the comping line for a jazz song? Billy Sheehan does a fine job as bassists in Mr. Big's songs. Besides its all about expression with musical instruments, not roles. If they felt the bass was holding it down down the rythym and chordal structure well enough they could easly incorporated a keyboard, or even dare I say a guitar could stay in the background.

Billy is really overrated but the worst part is his tone. Now a true bassist is Cliff Burton he had great leads but kept the rhythm. Call me old skool if you want, but many of these current "lead guitarists with basses" are more flash and speed then what the instrument is intended for. I firmly believe the bassist that really should get the most credit for great bass playing is Chris Squire of YES. He took the bass and moved it from the back of the band to the front, yet still maintained it's purpose as a percussive, yet melodic compliment to the drummer. He not only provided wow but also a foundation under their songs.

You're absolutely right 109!, Chris Squire is a trademark for sure, Billy Sheehan can play anything, but it's like you said, "flash and speed". Another "not less important" bassists to me are John Deacon from Queen and Geezer Butler from Black Sabbath, also good ones, but there are even more, the list would not end at all lol.

@109ace Sheehan also focuses mainly on rhythm within the workings of a band, but when it comes time for a solo, he will rip some shit up, and I don't disagree with you about being old school, the basses main job is to shake the floor, make the room your sound board, but there's nothing wrong with being able to shred in addition to that all-important job, just listen to Sheehan's work in Mr. Big or other bands, and you'll hear that he was able to keep the bass grove in addition to rocking out.

@109ace This is a bass solo, not a song, so yeah, of course it's flashy. Would you like to see a guitar solo where the guys just doing the comping line for a jazz song? Billy Sheehan does a fine job as bassists in Mr. Big's songs. Besides its all about expression with musical instruments, not roles. If they felt the bass was holding it down down the rythym and chordal structure well enough they could easly incorporated a keyboard, or even dare I say a guitar could stay in the background.

@109ace these current lead guitarist with bassist are you serious. billy is from what the 80' 70 i really don't know, but its called a lead bassist. Billy is really overrated but the worst part is his tone. Now a true bassist is Cliff Burton he had great leads but kept the rhythm. The bass is not a percussion instrument, the bass is a rhythm instrument. But in the end you can play the bass however you want. Also look up bassist of tool he is also a great lead bassist

'rhythm instrument' and 'percussion instrument' are mutually exclusive..ALL bassists can keep rhythm..i dont think youll like billy a lot if youre too much into metal/guitars..but believe me, billy is everything a bassist aspires to be..

@NIKKGAGE1994 I wasn't dissing on Geddy Lee. He was a big influence on me when I was playing back in the 70's. I think he shares an equal amount of talent with Paul McCartney in the abilty to write the songs, and play a moving, melodic bass line while singing at the same time. Dude, you read my comment wrong. I have nothing but respect for Geddy. I was commenting in a sarcastic manner to bluesuley who thinks I have no idea who Geddy Lee is.

I think things need to be put into perspective. Billie is a great lead guitarist who performs on a bass. That's it folks. He's a pretty gosh darn good lead guitarist. Any other unknown lead guitarist, in any good bar band can pick up a bass and wow people too.

well....no. i've been trying to get that three-finger speed for a while now and it's real tough to get it to be fast and continuous. second: i wanna see a guitarist play with the thicker strings. i'm both bassist and guitarist and everytime i have some guys who play guitar at my place they try out the bass and fail utterly. they can pick a few horrobly sounding notes and that's about it
