@MeAnnoyYou I actually grew up in the Philippines and moved after grade 6 so yes, Grade 6 sounds a little young to know these things but over there, we're bombarded with info even at the early years. I know a bit, maybe not in depth of what people learn in high school there but yeah :). Philippines came from the name Philip who was the King of Spain when philippines was colonized by the spaniards. I've read some discussions on this topic of why Filipinos in America deny being Asian. One Filipino said is it's because Filipinos would rather be Polynesians than to be Filipino. Is that right? Every Filipino party I have been to have Polynesian dancers but never do they have a traditional Filipino dance.

A lot of Filipinos don't actually know or trace their origin because during spanish colonization a lot of the Indigenous Philippine People change their surnames to Spanish Surnames for tax purposes the "Claveria Decree", it's hard to trace that. Although some has real spanish ancestry & Philippines is diverse country. Some may have mixed with Malay, Austronesian,Chinese, Japanese, European, American etc. Filipino are Filipinos. We are made us FILIPINOS that made us different from other ethnic.

Geographicly and Cultrualy the Phillipines is nothing like The Pacific Islands. As a Hawaiian i take that as an insult. The Phillipines is an archipelago. Filipinos don't travel the ocean like us polynesians,micronesians and melanasians. Just cause the pacific ocean touches your shores it doesn't make you an islander. So if the Tagalog, Capampangan, Ilocano, Bicolano, Bisaya, Cebuano, etc.. languages are parts or belong to the Austronesian languages of the Pacific, then Filipinos are Pacific Islanders same with Guam, Palau, Solomon Islands, Micronesia, Marianas..etc.

Filipinos are the results of mixed marriages between asian arabs, chinese, americans, japanese. etc..But the original people of the Philippines were Polynesians from the Islands of Indonesia and the Pacific Islands. People of Guam, Solomon Islands, Palau Islands, Micronesia, Marianas, Hawaii Islands etc... are Polynesians/Pacific Islanders as far as Madagascar in Indian Ocean are Polynesians. And so Filipinos should call the pacific Islanders and not asians.

Philippines actually are Polynesian people of the Pacific Islands stretching from Philippines, Guam, Palau Islands, Marianas Islands, Solomon Islands, Micronesia, Hawaii Islands, and some polynesians went to Samoa and Fiji Islands. The Philippines as a country was near to the continent of Asia, but never been a part of Asia, the pacific plate and the Asian continental plates are seperate ones. Original people of the Philippines were Polynesians not asians from mainland Asia.

These modern filipinos you mentioned was thedirect result of intermarriages between the aetas/negritos/dumagat descent and the polynesians called "The Balang-hai" now barangay people. Remember the african pygmae of the Philipppines are the original settlers in the Philippines and when the Polynesians made a direct contact with them, then the next generations of Filipinos were small, flatnose, darkskinned.
