  • I would hardly compare or put the iPad in the same class as a desktop/laptop. It is extremely limited in comparison to personal computers.

  • @ThisIsWonga1 but for less tech savvy people like my ignorant-to-computer parents, the ipad is perfect for them. For me, laptops all the way.

  • Watching on an iPad!

  • Nice Video! Its a interesting ;)

  • What are those pad things called where what you draw on them appears on the computer screen? Like in the video here?

  • @SoundStation98 a tablet. the one hes using is the wacom intuos 4

  • @SoundStation98 woops i mean 3.. fail

  • Matt- always love your fresh perspective on all things Apple!!

  • iPad / Pads < a real Macintosh or PC.

  • Complexitiy is good.. To me. Mabey to beginners and elders who cant seem to get how to use a computer, the ipad is good there. I still dont get it. IT IS JUST A BIG IPOD! It is portable but why when you can do the same on an ipod? Pc's are good for gaming, moding, programing, advanced word processing, advanced work, dvd's .................

  • @MSNWindows7 More screen space that's why.

  • @MSNWindows7 Go to an Apple store and play on an iPhone, then move over to an iPad. You will understand.

  • @thekeyring I have both, Same...

  • According to Walter Isaacson's Jobs bio, the origina

  • How did you get the Mac "OS" on the iPad

  • @SuperTheguys he probably used a video editor

  • @TheTonyk123 nope he used an mac emulator

  • iPad=Toaster

  • lmgtfy.com /?q=iPad+Review

  • iOS 5 will be able to run independently from iTunes, so this WILL be an appliance. Apply internet and you have a basic web browsing tool, no files, no fuss. My school also uses these instead of laptops now.

Consider this: The price is worth it. It has a dual core A5 chip with over a GHz, has decent speakers, and keeps all of that from overheating when trapped in a sealed metal box.

  • The iPad is a macintosh with Mini vMac when jailbroken.

  • @RobloxProuductions doesnt work ;) Mini vMac just frezze

  • Like an advertisement in this videos said, apple is for "the rest of us" meaning the idiots that don't know how to use a real computer, I'm 13, I'm not a computer nerd, I don't live for computers, but I know how to get work done on a PC, not just fanny about on an iPad. Steve Jobs is a clever man who has realised that in this life, there are idiots that will pay for anything as long as it's white, shiny and has angry birds, even if it costs $500.That is where Apple comes in.

  • @TheFizzyPig Actually, the Mac lineup is made for working with media. Graphics design, audio and video editing, video rendering and anything else you can think of in that field can be and is done more easily on a Mac, that's what it's for.

The Mac wasn't meant to play games or anything of that nature, that's not their field. Apple is interested in making an easy to use, fun way to get more work done.

  • OMG i love Apple. Even though i have never owned or most likely ever will own a MAC based computer, I understand there greatness. Unfortunately there is no MAC that will play my games better than my PC will at the same cost. I cant wait to get my iphone 4 next month!!!! IOS5 FTW

  • @GT5Enthusiast wait a moment , iphone 5 comes out late october !

  • @Seantube3 I did a video about it :) Check it out!

  • God I hope steve job wont die soon! I don't like his monopolistic strategies, but at least he knows how to make great stuff years ahead the others...

  • matt, i love your videos

  • ha he wrote the Apple II "hello" on the iPad

  • I think that computer based devices like the iPad will one day replace TV. We are seeing that now with internet TV services like Hulu (although they have done nothing but shot themselves in the foot recently) and movie services like Netflix being added to *everything*. Watch yourselves providers like DirecTV and Comcast, you won't last much longer. Internet devices will become our biggest source of information, like how TV replaced radio.

  • It doesn't look right seeing a iPad next to a Macintosh. But good video.

  • I never saw an old 1980's mac and an Ipad together before.

  • a device that can spit out knowledge and entertainment and data....just like a toaster can spit out bread

    - wise words..wise words

  • When the Macintosh was released, the only other OS was MS-DOS, the most confusing OS IN THE WORLD!

  • iPad 2 giveaway contest. Info in my profile.

  • I wish Apple would give the Mac more attention :(

  • "like a toaster spits out bread". Not sure if this has been said but a toaster doesn't spit out bread! You put in bread and it spits out toast :D

  • @eddkahn It spits out toasted bread.

  • no matt toasters spit out toast

  • @ryananderson280195 Ummm.... isn't toast a type of bread? Kind of a douche comment on an insightful video.

  • I don't think multi-tasking even existed anywhere when the macintosh was introduced.

  • an ipad isn't even close to a computer, it's a glorified ipod touch

  • @GranolaGooch Exactly. That's my point. That's why its better for vast majority of people.

  • @MattsMacintosh You mean the vast majority of the incompetents.

  • @iEatUglyNoobs Nope, I mean average, normal people that have lives and jobs and don't need or have the time for the hassle of a traditional computer. Since when does wanting to use something that actual works conveniently make you incompetent? It seems to me that the opposite is true.

  • @MattsMacintosh Ahem, Asus transformer tablet, Xoom, and more are not "traditional computers" nor are they over sized ipods, but the true definition of a tablet.

  • @iEatUglyNoobs Yep, those are great products too (I own a Xoom as well), but I would argue that the iPad is a better overall package for most people because of ease of use and app selection. Of course, that's not true in all cases. People should always get the best product that fits them. I'm a proponent of all the tablet/ mobile OS devices that make technology more accessible. Rhetorical question: Isn't the Xoom not just an oversized Android phone?

  • @MattsMacintosh Actually, it has an os designed for tablets. Its more of a netbook than it is a phone.

  • @iEatUglyNoobs iOS was originally designed for tablets well (it was just released on a phone first because of hardware limitations of the time). Having used the Xoom for a few weeks, as well as being the proud owner of a MSI wind netbook, I can assure you that Honeycomb is much closer to a phone OS than a netbook version of Windows (or lite Linux builds). Once again, though, I think that's a really good thing for everyone except the tech nerds.

  • @MattsMacintosh I see your point, but I think that the Android OS is expanding past just "tech nerds". Maybe just, above average techies, or even average people. It just takes a bit to get used to I'd assume. I'm waiting for an asus transformer to be available on a website that accepts paypal.

  • @GranolaGooch The iPod touch is technically a computer too. Sorry to burst your bubble.

  • Doesn't MacPaint look alot like the paint program on the pc's?

  • @elsenormexicano That’s because the MS Paint interface is based on MacPaint. Well, actually MS Paint is based on PC Paintbrush, which is from PC Paint, which is from MacPaint, which is from LisaDraw.

  • I disagree with the statement that the Macintosh failed. It was great and people loved it, but others took over eventually. After it, every computer had a graphical user interface; it succeeded in changing computing at the time just as the iPhone revolutionised the mobile phone industry, as nearly every mobile phone nowadays is a touch-screen smartphone. It failed as a specific product, but it surpassed the wildest expectations in building a solid foundation on which to build modern computing.

  • 2:39 - Do you mind detailing which app that is displayed on the iPad?

  • iPad is not a Mac, its a Newton

  • dont you mean toast not bread?

  • @upla123 Toast is a type of bread.

  • @drrobertoboogie97 i know but usuly a toaster spits out toast unless it is a fail toaster

  • I like your videos... They're different!

  • biggest set back: no flash videos

and i could (and did) buy a laptop for that much.

The Ipad and other tablets are just a hype

  • For a second I thought you had an iPad version of vMac.

  • Thumbs up if you r watching this from your iPad (1st gen)

  • I loved the video you made. You are spot-on with the premise that the Mac has evolved into the iPad. The iPad IS the information appliance that Larry Ellison envisioned in an old video you can find on youtube and the Dynabook portable computer described by Alan in 1972:

a network connection with the ability to purchase, transfer, and download "instantiate" files; global information connectivity, such as libraries; media connectivity; and a target price of $500.

  • actually with the 4.2 update now allows multitasking...

  • "If they make computers as easy to use as the telephone, I'll buy one." Well, instead of waiting for someone to come up with it for them, they did It themselves!

  • The screen sizes are nearly the same, too

  • I've now come back to this video twice. I think the "iPad as Mac" thesis is a really interesting one that you should explore more in your videos. Maybe you could expand the idea to talk about how Apple has always been about "ease of use" and how the devices of the last few years (iPhone, iPad etc) are finally getting them there.

Anyway, just wanted to say, love your videos Matt, keep it up... :)

  • @RegelnDerTechnik Oh my god you are incredibly stupid.

  • @RegelnDerTechnik screw you pc fanboy.

  • @RegelnDerTechnik Learn to spell, and use grammar properly.

  • @RegelnDerTechnik Then why are you watching this video?

  • @RegelnDerTechnik If Macs are for noobs, PCs are for noobs too.

Because all a Macintosh is, is a PC with a different booting method, and a different OS.

  • @RegelnDerTechnik How stupid are you?

  • does the ipad have a word prosceser if no thats another reason to have a computer

  • @scenscoff yes it has pages (wich is apples version of word) and its 4.99

  • @theshinywolf thats fair enoguh then.

  • @scenscoff Yes. It has an app called Pages, which is the iPad version of Mac's Pages, but they do the exact same thing. iPad has the whole iLife Suite.

  • @AndySofaProductions fair enough thanks

  • @scenscoff No Problemo

  • i disagree about the ipad replacing the desktop, in m opinion i will always need a desktop/lap top even if i have an ipad.

  • Where do you get all this old school cool apple stuff?

  • 2:27 what was that thing he was drawing on to photoshop????????

  • @clawlovers a robot?

  • @notisrhcp i mean the device he was using to draw the robot

  • Love your vids. The energy and resources you bring is tops! Thanks!

  • did you use mini vmac

  • the original iPad CAN DO MULTITASKING EITHER !

  • @aaroninclub so what?

  • Your videos are so COOL!!!

  • "The iPad, with it's REVOLUTIONARY interface!"

I'm not saying it's not revolutionary, but why why WHY is it that people act as if the iPad's interface is new, and never-before-seen, when it's the same thing as the iPhone/iPod touch?

  • 2:41 what's that app?

  • I'm always going to need my Macbook. :)

  • i really like the statement and the comparison.

  • Great video, Matt. iPad has already become a ubiquitous item. Whether you love, hate, or know nothing about Apple and computers in general, you KNOW what an 'ipad' is.

  • auctually the ipad can multitask

  • I like you, Matt. You're one of the few Mac users who doesn't jerk off thinking about how awesome his iPad is and how it's going to replace everything else. I mean, WHY would you even assume that in the first place? Granted, it is a powerful and useful machine, but when you get down to it, it's still a flat piece of aluminum with a touchscreen. You have to stop somewhere.

  • my toaster spits out fire

  • My friend just got an iPad because his dad works for apple.

    I'm so jealous! D:

  • Like you last comment :)

  • well now ipad does multitask

  • @guidobertisch2 and when it got released

    CYDIA WINS

  • What is Multi-tasking. You can only do one thing on the screen but have the same thing in the background? True Multi-tasking is only in real life, such as : Making toast and tea.

  • Comment removed

  • i like the way u drew "hello" :D sent from ipad

  • i love the multitask line :D (i'm a mac fan but no multitask is just stupid)

  • @MattsMacintosh can you do a review on the iPod 4 (or however you call it)

  • What an excellent buzz word.. "Information Appliance"

  • ... [;)]

  • nice video

  • what will they make after another 26 year later? :)

  • 2:57 - Come November, the iPad will be able to do multitasking. Just want to point that out.

  • Awesome vid man, I really like your work. :)

  • I love this video C@j@L

  • Apple still is to expensive for the masses.

  • O,M,G that a dinosaur hahahha

  • Nice :)

  • I'm not sure if I want an iPad or not. It's pretty cool, but I have a 32 GB 3rd Gen iPod touch with barely anything on it yet.

  • This was the first "review" and a video I've seen that demonstrates the multiple environments an iPad can be used in.

  • Here soon, I see touch pad keyboards (like on iPod touch and iPad)

It sounds really cool, but I like buttons a little bit better on a keyboard!

  • Also, I heard both their screens were the same size. I don't know if thats true or not though.

  • How did you get the Macintosh desktop onto the iPad?

  • @tyler5310 Nothing impressive, just a screenshot image I resized to fit.

  • @MattsMacintosh

    whahaha.. :P

  • @MattsMacintosh i use my macbook / windows XP from iPhone / iPad anywhere anytime

  • Also, what a fantastic closing line :)

  • I love that John C quote :D

  • thta computer in the background is soo 70's

  • Orginal Mac didnt do multi tasking. 26 yrs later still no multi tasking, but now w. the power of magic, Apple shines...

  • @lAuthenticl Well, the iPad DOES multi-task, just not in the way many people expect. It's not user controled multi-tasking, the system does it. It runs things like say your music in the background while you browse the web or check your tweets and so on. Apple doesn't tend to give us things unless they can do it properly or at least better than the competition, they don't settle for half assed. I'd like to see all iOS devices on par though. iPad could do with iOS4!

  • uuuuuuuu

  • no its not mac its newton the first "ipad"

  • @MattsMacintosh I got my iPad yesterday, got it fired up and everything. And I have to say, this is the best thing ever! I don't need a USB or full OS because I'm not an serious computer-user.

  • USAiTunesGiftCards . COM Says it all !

  • wow! very interesting take on things! I think people are overly criticizing the iPad. For tech people who understand it all, yes it may fall short of their ideas and needs. But for average computer users, I think it fits in very well. One thing that made me very excited about this device, was its simplicity. I was at a BestBuy the other day, and saw a middle-aged woman there, showing her mother an ipad. She thought it was amazing, and was able to use it very easily...

  • I totally agree. I have been waiting here in Canada for my iPad to take a Photo of the iPad and a version 1.0 About Screen :)

  • Oh thanks. (I was talking about the magazine ad)

Do you still have the image of that ad?

    Thanks. :)

  • I find myself returning back to this video...

One question though. Where did you get the image at 1:37? Or where is it from??

  • @MatrixSlide Do you mean the computer screen? That's the "about this Mac" (called abount Finder then) screen from my 1984 Macintosh. If you mean the image that immediatly follows it, that is from a 1984 magizine ad.

  • Great video! I think what we see now with these iPhone OS devices is what Steve Jobs had originally intended with the Macintosh in 1984 but was unable to do so because of the leadership of his own company (which is also what made him leave Apple a few years later)

  • i disagree, the macintosh was designed to make computers easier and therefore open up the market to the majority which dident want a computer. the whole idea was you can be alot more productive if you know what you are doing. the ipad on the other hand is meant as a secondary computer, meant to compete with the growing netbook market, you are even required to have a computer running itunes to use it. completely different goal than the macintosh.

  • the ipad is anything but revolutionary as it was advertised but still very good video

  • ipad isnt a mac computer otherwise it would have leopard... it is the same thing as a itouch so u sayin a itouch is a computer too

  • @TCrumProductionz I think you need to re-watch the video. He was comparing it to the original Macintosh, not the OSX Macs of today. His whole point was that its NOT a full computer.

  • @TCrumProductionz dude you're totally missing the point!

  • Awesome Vid! Your facts really get me thinking!

  • Your videos are amazing

  • great insight. I am blown away by the comparison.

  • The real question is whether a keyboard dock with USB ports to plug a hard drive or a DVD player or a printer will exist to make the iPad autonomous from a Mac with iTunes !

  • @civiP3 those things will become increasingly useless in our world.

  • giant ipod touch!!!!1

  • Cheap Appliance!

  • @TheMrgeekmania lol thats what I was thinking.

  • This video also seems like it was filmed in the 1980s.

  • He's right, if you think about it: music, video, photos chat, email, web browsing, youtube, text, presentation and spreadsheets processor, calculator, basic graphic editing and many apps that do other stuff... the iPad is already able to replace a basic computer for the basic tasks in web 2.0. Not to mention gaming. And not to mention even lan and online multiplayer gaming.

  • I just bought a macbook I hate the ipad

  • great vid Matt, you know your stuff!

  • You, sir, understand.

  • Great video Matt.

  • Awesome video :D

  • you should have way more subscribers! your videos are all professional looking

  • this was the only ipad video on my subscription list that entertained me

  • The irony of all this is multitasking is be demoed "tomorrow" April 8th (2010).

  • Thank you. This is the best iPad video I've seen. Not "iPad Unboxing" "iPad Review" "Oh, look these are apps you can get for the iPad if you bought one"

  • Wow, i've never thought of the iPad fulfilling the original dreams Apple had that were never met by the Macintosh, but it's hard not to be convinced after watching this video.

Sadly, though, right now I don't see the iPad going any farther than the original Mac did.

  • Wow. This video is highly well-produced! Amazing! "Like"!.
