  • Wonderful. But the walk in and out? Straight from John Scott Whiteley's Bach 21 C series. He just needs the pink shades and big coat!

  • Gorgeous and talented. Very jealous!

  • I think this sounds awesome. i could listen to this all day. I am amazed at his hands on those keys.

  • Cool vid! Came -played -went :-)

  • While I personally enjoy listening to this piece a little bit slower, Jonathan Scott is very talented and I certainly do not mind some variety in life. Excellent piece and performance!

  • @TerranRepublic Yeah I agree with you. I love this piece but the Toccata should be quite a lot slower.

  • I like it fast. :)

  • too fast

  • At first I also thought this was too fast, but the precision is amazing, and I can hear all the notes, so...maybe it's NOT too fast. Play on!

  • Too damn fast! Could have done with a faked 32ft effect at the end. Also, at the end, in the score that last chord is repeated, but many players (Mr Scott included) omit it. I always feel that the work loses something as a result. Above all, slow down and let the music breathe! Composers are often not a good judge of how their own music should be played - Franck and Messiaen are just two whose playing style varied wildly and never adhered to the scores.

  • @EccentricRichard - Now that you've ripped Jonathan Scott to shit, post a video of YOU playing the same piece. Show us exactly how it should be played.

  • @EccentricRichard If the composer isn't a good judge of how his/her music should be played, then who the hell is?

  • A b s o l u t e ly f a n t a s t i c ! Loved the church, the organ, the interpretation and the video. Bravo !!!

  • Vivat T C Lewis!!

  • Indeed a bit faster than most interpretations, but nevertheless technically, aesthetically and stylistically an astonishingly magnificent interpretation of this classic organ masterpiece.

  • wow...!like the sound

  • I agree with Nikorgan, too fast. The grandioso of the work gets lost. It reminds me of what Marie Claire Allein said when she recorded works the third time round.

  • " A Towering Macabre ecstasy permiates majestically......."

  • Really nice organ and sound ! But so fast !

So many people play this Toccata and Gigout's as if they're in a hurry. More than 130 as a tempo removes the effect of "assured increasing majesty". It's a pity.

Delacour's remains for me the best rendition and best reference.

Anyway, tastes and points of view are different from a musician to another. The technique of the organist is remarkable and I wish I could here more from him.

  • I love his rendition but I like Bish's way better. Diane seems to really emphasize the pedal notes where he does not.

  • I know Jonathan and he never does anything by halves. Look at Boelman's tempo and you will see he is playing at the right tempo

  • @bevandjoy .... if so, then perhaps yet another example where a composer's metronome marking tend to be on the fast side!

  • Never heard it played so...fast. Not a bad performance...I just like it better slower I think

  • Very crisp and precise performance, I could not do better but although I think many pieces are played too slowly I have to agree with the people that say this was a little too fast, but maybe you were seeing how fast you could play it this time. You are one of the best organist in the world I think.

  • To me - this is a good speed. I also like the dynamics and transparency of the ostinato parts with the Tromb. 16' motif.

  • Too fast for my taste, but still, exquisitely registered and played. The video itself was nicely done, too.

  • The performance may on the quick side of things, but the modestly generous and very clear acoustic of this superb church permit this tempo. What a superlative organ by T C Lewis, which is always a thrill to hear or play!

As always, Jonathan Scott gets the pulse racing and the spine tingling, and so very musically

    In a word, magnificent!

  • Technically outstanding, but it's played too fast..

The correct tempo can easily be determined by using the pedal theme as a guide. The theme doesn't come across natural in this recording. This is not the right tempo.

  • Just bought my 2nd CD from him! No doubt i'll be buying more! Fantastic!!!

    V. Lecha.

  • Nice playing, good video!

But, why is there a cut in the sound at 2:16?

  • I LOVE this organ!

Played it several times - and one thing the sound on this clip doesn't get across is the full power of the awesome Pedal Trombone 16' - it is truly cataclysmic!

    Great playing as usual!

I think I'm right it saying that John Scott prefers this organ to the one at the Bridgewater ?!?

  • @meknight77 - you're probably right that Jonathan Scott (not to be confused with John Scott) would prefer this to the Bridgewater Hall organ. This is a gem. Bridgewater is a hopeless compromise of an instrument with no real character.

  • Superb as usual Jonathan :)

  • Excellente, parfaite interprétation de la Toccate de Boellmann. Vraiment bien dosée la pédale d'expression, et le travail a la pédale, chantant. Très bonne registration.

    Toutes mes félicitations. JFFM.

  • Bravo, bravo, bravo!!!
