My first song when introduced to them. Saw and ad for them in Guitar mag. and figured what the hey...and been hooked ever since. Awesome talent you've got there!
This was my first DT song too, in 2008!! - I saw an awesome quote on the bottom of someones forum sig (from Voices), so I googled the quote, downloaded the album, and it was fuckin sweet :) after which of course I bought the original album. Their music has heavily influenced my style of playing, composition, covering, even after just one year. A truly awesome band.
Hmm, this might be my first DT song aswell, I'm just not sure...anyway, the albums "Awake","Metropolis part 2:Scenes from a memory" and the live album "Live at the Marquee" are the ones that really got me into DT.
What an interesting song to be introduced to dream theater with. But it is fitting in a way. You still get everyone well represented (except maybe Myung). Cool keyboard intro, awesome drums, James before his accident, guitar is maybe a little less highlighted but hey.
haha i know look at Portnoy hes like 42 and look wat he did with Black Clouds. EXCEPT when it comes to Lars Ulrich. my cousin was saying in concert he just has to stop playing because he's losing the ability to playing those old super fast songs. sucks for him that he cant play his own songs anymore.
Yeah, the thing about Portnoy is that he has been very consistent in the parts he writes for DT's music. Lars Peaked with ..In Justice For All and from then on his playing became pretty simplistic and therefore he did not keep his chops up.
The only difficulty of this song in the drumsline is the intro with the toms, because it is not a common sixteen-note pattern but seventeen, and you didn't do it like this.
I hear what you're saying and I agree that it's not as tight as it could be when covering this song against the album version. But if I were recording this in a studio with a band, you would not be able to say the same thing. It's different when playing/recording with a live band or recording.
Well whoever is right or wrong is imaterial.. "Did you know that reality is imaterial" Lol! Sorry couldnt help myself there. Keep up the good work mate! :-)
The fill at 1:06 is not a roll but a triplet between the snare and toms - double on snare and one on tom x 4 (with feeling). Just constructive criticism mate but well done :-)
I believe you are wrong. Having seen MP play this song many times and hearing 4-5 different bootlegs of the song, I believe I am playing what he played on each occasion. It's the way he accents it that gives it the feel you are talking about.
adurhamwv, you are basically right, but (to dazvat1) I don't believe that people should have to play the song exactly as written (unless you're playing "rockband" haha). in the end, it's about how well everything fits together. if he did some weird crazy fill that didn't fit with the song, then I would agree it need some criticizm. it's a really good cover :D
By the way, how long have you been playing? Also, I went through Amarillo on a road trip one time, neat place. Although, it was kind of amusing when one of the restaurants wouldn't serve us alcohol because it was a 'dry state'. Haha! So, we had to join this membership thing that let us have beer. xD
hey i don't know if your bass drum sounds like that live like in your rehearsal space but i have some awesome tips to make it sound better along with proper tuning of your toms toms if your interested. but otherwise its pretty good.
Thanks! Please understand that this is recorded through a camcorder. The sound of my live drums is great, it's hard to make that come across in these videos. Some sound better than others.
The section from 3:39 to 3:58 - did Portnoy overdub the octoban fills on top of the drum groove? I notice you play some of them but not the octoban roll at the end of the passage.
I can actually answer your question. The answer is- Yes he did. I bought the Portnoy Archives (the book that has all portnoy's favorites written out) and it actually made a note on the music that he did in fact overdub that part.
You're right. I read in the past, one of the few times he did overdubs on the kit. Also, he overdubbed some of the octoban fills at the beginning of A Change of Seasons.
same with metropolis part 1 towards the middle, when he just starts to go crazy with the snare... he isn't even playing those, they were added in portnoy by the studio...
thats one of the reasons doesn't like images and words that much, because its so produced and he hates that
Fuck yeah, brotha. This was the first DT song I heard too, and I haven't stopped listening to them xD
I actually stopped working so I could search YouTube to see somebody play this; you're the man and the watch is well worth being behind in work! Rock on brotha

my God haha, I've been workin ont his song for the past couple days, I've got the intro pretty well nailed, but after that I'm screwed haha ,you sir have done an excellent job with it.
