  • Dude, you have an awsome drum kit. Congrats!!

  • i like your username

  • even tho u dont have any octobans or splashes(well, none that i can c anyway), u still managed to pull it off quite well. gr8 job, and keep rockin!!

  • @dreamtheaterfan39 i take back wat i mentioned bout splashes

  • Hmm, do you want me to send you the actual score for this cos you're not getting it all in there.

  • @marcusfedgus No thanks. If I had wanted to do a verbatim cover, I would have. This is my version.

  • Man Awsome but our base hears so.....flat but lucifer stand by me extremly awsome it's the first song i ever heard of DT,too.^^

  • dude you were awesome!

  • What cymbal is that you're playing from 2:06-2:26?

  • @Nubnut Paiste 2002 Heavy Hi Hats as aux hats.

  • what sticks?

  • @leaxues ProMark Hickory 747 Nylon Tip

  • Fing Sweet man!!

  • Nice cover!

  • My first song too. Way back in '97. LOL.

Again, not 100% accurate, but hey, it's not by any means horrible. Nice job. Thanks for not slaughtering this song, like most people do.

  • you're frickin awesome man. I do feel sometimes though that the beat lags behind in your playing, but it's a very minor thing, great rhythm.

  • My first song when introduced to them. Saw and ad for them in Guitar mag. and figured what the hey...and been hooked ever since. Awesome talent you've got there!

  • OMG! Love portnoys double pedal beats!

  • Ffs! This was awesome

  • i need a drummer like u

  • Nice one dude!!

I'm gonna learn this song too =D

    Nice set too!

  • H...Ha...HARD...N...NİPPLES!

  • AWSOME!!!!

  • Excellent cover, and wicked set. Thanks for sharing

  • I ffing love it :)

    5 stars *****

  • What's on your kit?

  • It's a Pearl kit with Paiste cymbals. Go to my channel page for specs.

    Thanks for watching!

  • This was my first DT song too, in 2008!! - I saw an awesome quote on the bottom of someones forum sig (from Voices), so I googled the quote, downloaded the album, and it was fuckin sweet :) after which of course I bought the original album. Their music has heavily influenced my style of playing, composition, covering, even after just one year. A truly awesome band.

  • Welcome to the club!

  • Hmm, this might be my first DT song aswell, I'm just not sure...anyway, the albums "Awake","Metropolis part 2:Scenes from a memory" and the live album "Live at the Marquee" are the ones that really got me into DT.

  • mustve been awesome to hear this drum intro as the first DT song u ever heard considering ur a drummer and all

  • Hát vazz, ez kibaszott jó. remélem beszéled a magyart, oszt el tudod olvasni eztet is.

Még jó hogy én doboltam fel ez a vidit :D

  • What an interesting song to be introduced to dream theater with. But it is fitting in a way. You still get everyone well represented (except maybe Myung). Cool keyboard intro, awesome drums, James before his accident, guitar is maybe a little less highlighted but hey.

  • @GuillermoSmyser This has one of Myung's most challenging basslines in it! In my opinion anyway, and of course not counting his solos

  • hahaa it`s a human, not monster xD AWESOME WORK!

  • GREAT WORK MAN! YOUR AWESOME!

  • you're a monster!

  • That's awesome. The first song I learned by DT was Pull Me Under

  • mine too! with keyboards! :D

  • That was fucking awesome! How long you been playing?

  • First DT song i heard was Honor thy Father , and its how i found you on YouTube u own the best cover of it , and all the songs u do , imo.

  • awesome...

  • Excellent work! Very well done, indeed

    (and nice kit)!!!

  • haha i know look at Portnoy hes like 42 and look wat he did with Black Clouds. EXCEPT when it comes to Lars Ulrich. my cousin was saying in concert he just has to stop playing because he's losing the ability to playing those old super fast songs. sucks for him that he cant play his own songs anymore.

  • Yeah, the thing about Portnoy is that he has been very consistent in the parts he writes for DT's music. Lars Peaked with ..In Justice For All and from then on his playing became pretty simplistic and therefore he did not keep his chops up.

  • The only difficulty of this song in the drumsline is the intro with the toms, because it is not a common sixteen-note pattern but seventeen, and you didn't do it like this.

  • Amazing, this is the first DT song i heard, and i fell in love with it.

  • Lol i thought u were young buh still great playing :)

  • dude thts wicked how old are you ?

  • I am an old fart, 37.

  • how long have you been playing? At least 20 years, no?

  • 27 years

  • I always loved the groove of the drums in this song. Its just so relaxing.

  • AWESOME MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • well done bro...

  • Not as tight as it could be, not a bad attempt, but would sound loose on a studio recording.

  • I hear what you're saying and I agree that it's not as tight as it could be when covering this song against the album version. But if I were recording this in a studio with a band, you would not be able to say the same thing. It's different when playing/recording with a live band or recording.

  • Fantastic cover, very well done. Have you ever thought about investing in a Portnoy signature boxing glove for your kit? lol

  • Well whoever is right or wrong is imaterial.. "Did you know that reality is imaterial" Lol! Sorry couldnt help myself there. Keep up the good work mate! :-)

  • This is my reality. :p

  • The fill at 1:06 is not a roll but a triplet between the snare and toms - double on snare and one on tom x 4 (with feeling). Just constructive criticism mate but well done :-)

  • I believe you are wrong. Having seen MP play this song many times and hearing 4-5 different bootlegs of the song, I believe I am playing what he played on each occasion. It's the way he accents it that gives it the feel you are talking about.

    Thanks!!

  • I think in the album recording of the song he just does quarter notes- snare tom tom tom

  • adurhamwv, you are basically right, but (to dazvat1) I don't believe that people should have to play the song exactly as written (unless you're playing "rockband" haha). in the end, it's about how well everything fits together. if he did some weird crazy fill that didn't fit with the song, then I would agree it need some criticizm. it's a really good cover :D

  • Awesome job, I think all your covers are great!

By the way, how long have you been playing? Also, I went through Amarillo on a road trip one time, neat place. Although, it was kind of amusing when one of the restaurants wouldn't serve us alcohol because it was a 'dry state'. Haha! So, we had to join this membership thing that let us have beer. xD

    Again, great playing!

  • badass drummer!!!

    greetings from italy.

  • this guy rocks

  • good job! see you got bose headphones

  • Average cost for all this kit? -.-

  • yeah i agree my videos dont sound that great anyway, but i was just checking. but awesome job.

  • hey i don't know if your bass drum sounds like that live like in your rehearsal space but i have some awesome tips to make it sound better along with proper tuning of your toms toms if your interested. but otherwise its pretty good.

  • Thanks! Please understand that this is recorded through a camcorder. The sound of my live drums is great, it's hard to make that come across in these videos. Some sound better than others.

  • how long have u been playin for???

  • sick man

  • you're a hooker ever since?

  • Who doesn't want to have paid for sex in odd time?

  • "This is the first DT song I ever heard. I have been hooked ever since."

    wow, same here too :D

you are a master at the drums by the way

  • Nice job dude... Sweet set too

  • His snare drum sounds exactly like the track... if only mine was...

  • amazing...

  • IN THE ZONE!

  • You NAILED that intro!:P

    Keep up the good work!

  • haha...this is also the first song i heard by dream theater. great cover!

  • dude! great job man

  • Dude I love your playing, even to DT. Rock on man!!!

  • Hey mate I've got a question -

The section from 3:39 to 3:58 - did Portnoy overdub the octoban fills on top of the drum groove? I notice you play some of them but not the octoban roll at the end of the passage.

  • I can actually answer your question. The answer is- Yes he did. I bought the Portnoy Archives (the book that has all portnoy's favorites written out) and it actually made a note on the music that he did in fact overdub that part.

  • You're right. I read in the past, one of the few times he did overdubs on the kit. Also, he overdubbed some of the octoban fills at the beginning of A Change of Seasons.

  • Good ear man, I didn't even know that.

  • same with metropolis part 1 towards the middle, when he just starts to go crazy with the snare... he isn't even playing those, they were added in portnoy by the studio...

thats one of the reasons doesn't like images and words that much, because its so produced and he hates that

  • Nice.

  • i hate you!

you play better than me D=

  • hello friend..

this is a fucking great video.. you played this songs in a perfectly way!!

    congratulations.. you´re a good drummer..

    \,,/

  • Fuck yeah, brotha. This was the first DT song I heard too, and I haven't stopped listening to them xD

I actually stopped working so I could search YouTube to see somebody play this; you're the man and the watch is well worth being behind in work! Rock on brotha

  • Thank you very much! I always like a good Youtube video as opposed to actually working at work. LOL

  • sir this is amazing

  • Great playing!!!

  • Great job man!

This is like the 50th time I watched this video and it still amazes me every time.

You should really do "Learning to Live" from Images and Words 1992

  • Dude, that is ridiculously accurate, good skills!

  • so cool, mike is my idol :D

but I've started to play a bit older hahaha

but someday i'll be like him

Congratulations guy! you really rocks :D

  • dude this rocks as much as the mirror you're very good. I've been playing guitar for a long time DT is one of my absolute favorite bands and pourtney is a phenominal drummer, I think he and neil peart are my favorites next to vinnie paul

  • The double bass will come with much repetition and practice. Ride a bike or run to strengthen your leg muscles.

Best of luck to you and practice practice practice.

  • Bravo!

  • DUDE!!!how old r u? ur frickin awesome!

  • Well, as my profile says, I am 36 and been playing for 26 of those years.

  • oh sorry, i didnt check out your profile, but keep it up, ur insane!!

  • No worries. I forgot to say thank you. So, Thank you!

  • im 13 years old and i`ve been playing for 3 years and im no where near as good as u but i`m pretty good

  • you have done a helluva' good job man! fuckin' A+1! you should be touring right now! keep up the hard work and dedication.

  • you kick ass nice job man!!!

  • OOoooOoohhh.. This would sound SO MUCH better with an unmuffed bass drum.

  • Fuck nice man really good timing. Loved to hear you play that in studio.

  • man, have you a band??

  • for the intro, is it straight 16th notes on the hihat? or is there a shuffle/pattern? if you understand my question....

  • It is straight 16ths. It is a very syncopated feel and had some linear groove elements.

  • Wow dude your playing is great ! No one on youtube plays DT's songs like you, you've a lot of abilities and you use each one of them !! It's such a great pleasure to hear you playing ! I wait for your covers of the new DT's album ... I'm sure it'll be easy for you ! Keep on posting !

  • nice job you pulled if off quite nicely. i want to learn this song cuz it has a real nice groover, especially at the begginging

  • Yes you can. Adapt the parts to your kit. And, hey, my kit is from 1990, so what are you trying to say? :)

  • So your set has 2 tombs--Who died in them? jk

  • I have been playing for 25 years and some of the DT music I have been playing since 1995 so it is something I have aquired over time. But, I am very good at memorization. I can listen to a song over and over and effectively learn it.
