Recoloring Screenshots and Pictures is Art Theft

The person still has it, that is a fact... Does nothing but increase. Not crediting and say you drew this (Other then recolor) on the other hand is not equal with "Art theft" But that would be taking credit, but its not a crime though, (I think wiki said it). < (Plagiarism?)

And I thought art theft was when you move some away from the person like in a house? Or any form of art.

Your attitude makes YOU seem five. And also, it IS classified as art theft, but to a minor degree. Art theft is: crediting yourself for the original art, re-coloring/editing over it, tracing poses/characters and claiming them, and anything else you do to tweak another person's work is stealing. It does not matter if you give full credit to the original artist or not, if you did not or cannot obtain consent from the ORIGINAL ARTIST, then it is stealing.

I license, copyright and sell my own comics and do graphic design on the side, I've had run ins with people stealing my images, tracing over them with their OCs and RPCs and claiming to have done the whole picture, and I've had people go onto websites and steal logos I've designed. I'm telling you now whether it's a logo or a screenshot art theft can lead to serious legal troubles.

Nice job. Screencap edits just strike me as a sign of laziness (there are plenty of alternatives if you don't have a scanner). Taking other people's own artwork without permission and doodling over it is nothing less than art theft.

Yes. Tracing is just like scanning only with your hand. Scanning is copying. Copying artwork is illegal... well, if not illegal (since it is not the original artwork of the anime) it is... very rude and inconsiderate of the artist whose artwork you love so much.

I draw my rpc and make little paint chibis of her on paint, without going over a screenshot. Now, YES I DO edit. BUT, if it's a picture made by someone like Masashi Kishimoto, WHO GETS PAID for his work, then it's slightly different. Everyone knows that the original pic was not the editors. Perhaps you should think about that. and perhaps you should talk to some of these so called "angry artists" I draw fanart for animes too ya know,it's their problem if they edit badly, and it's their choice,I undertsand that many people would be outraged if their work was drawn over,but let THEM do the speaking instead.

Fanfiction is not the same as editting. Fanart is the same as fanfiction. It's made by your own imagination. Editting can be done to screenshots and to original fanart done by others. It shows little creativity, and it shows you do not respect art enough to actually better your own talents via working on proportions, poses, or experience.

Also, Besides, some screen shots are really well editing and look nothing like the original character. In a way, wouldn't this be like flaming KiSS dolls? After all, most of those bases were created from other people's art just for other people to edit over them. It DOES matter to many artists. Many Japanese fanart sites have taken down their artwork because people are takeing them and scribbling on them in paint. They can't say anything about it because of the language barrier.
