My Dad had was under the nearest pylon and was video taping the whole thing. The race personnel asked that the video be turned over to the FSDO. He went over later that day to give his condolences, and everyone said he died doing what he loves best.

They are AIR RACES, what do you expect? The pilots know exactly what they are doing and have even been certified ("checked out") to race. Crashes happen, particularly going 500 mph 500 feet off of the ground.

God... I was in a hangar in the pit area when I felt the ground shake and heard the thud. All you could see was the blackened hull of the airplane and the black smoke coming from it. God, what a horrible experience.

Word. My dad got a zoomed-in shot of the hulk of the fuselage and there really wasn't much left, just a blackened smoking hull of an aircraft.
