In my religious education, we're studying none religious points on life after death, watching these videos (even though i was shitting myself half the time) were very helpful
Just enjoyed a trip down nostalgia lane, laughing at the hilarious fake acting and remembering how scary the 1990's were as a kid with the rosy glow of hindsight.....
.....then a noise outside makes me jump out of my skin XD LOL
The parts with the screaming cats freak me out the most ><...
IMO most of the movie was kinda boring and slow, but then end...damn, you're just not expecting it to get that intense because of how slow the movie's been up to that point. Really effective I suppose.
I hate the fact that everyone acts as if there's something wrong with this movie because it's dated. This is a terrific and terrifying story. The only reason you think it's absurd is because you have the unimpeachable assurance of hindsight. I just found out about this and made the mistake of watching it alone at one in the morning. It's now one in the afternoon and I haven't been to sleep yet. The girl with the creepy voice has kept me from sleeping. That's the mark of a good horror movie!
I remember at the age of 18 being completely taken in by it and shouting at the screen don't open the fucking glory hole you idiot i was scared shitless i was a very naive 18 year old and looking back on it a bit gullible to think it was real people ringing in to the studio made it more convincing to me i think and that it was shown on halloween night but i agree with fannyleroux thats what made top tv in them days
I think even to this day, this still gives the likes of most haunted a run for its money. Unfortuantly, i was in bed when this was on,so i didnt get to see it, but ive enjoyed watching it. I mean, sure, the sound fx are appauling, as is the acting at times, but that made tv back in them days. Compaired to modern times, its rubbish, but for back then, this is top stuff :)
I first saw this as an innocent and naive 9 year-old and was petrified. I genuinely believed it was real until Suzanne spoke with a voice changer (I had one myself at the time!) and all the studio lights and cameras went off. Great television though!
P.S. Has Parkinson gone mad at the end?! "Round and round the garden like a teddy bear...." Then he is attacked by a gang of vicious cats!!!!!!!! Ha ha ha!!!
it was in 1992--hallowe'en... bbc got a frying over it afterwards-it was a recorded drama but put out with a live number to say please ring in.
people did to say it was distressing but got only a recorded message saying its not live-or coul;dn't get through, bbc switchboard jammed --it was crazy! but fun afterwards....lol
Well done the BBC, i remember this well had the whole country sitting on the edge of there seets including me, it was about 2 -3 minutes to the end that i realised it was a set up.
Brilliant. This film is like a masterclass in building tension, only for all hell to break loose and make everyone shit themselves! Fantastic television. There's been nothing like it since!
I cant believe i have now found this video. I was just thinking about it the other day. I was 10 when i first watched this and was terrified when i went to bed. I thought it was real until now. I have just wasted an hour watching this and what a lot of rubbish. How crap is the mother, her daughters and the woman in the studio at acting. I thought coronation street was bad but this takes the biscuit, No wonder it was banned
im confused i remember a part in this where they have a thermal hit on the curtain and they rewind to see a man stood in the curtains , where is that scene
if i would of watched this as a kid it would of scared the hell outa me im 24 and i found it quite sceary and disturbing!!! lol good old bbc fantastic!!
Wow this show is great. I feel like I have seen similar things in the past but I'm sure they are just copycats of this one. Very well done. I would have never slept again if I saw this when I was a child. Great stuff!
These days you can tell if this is real or not, I felt the Kid's voices sounded a little monotonous in some places like those Christmas plays you only go to so they're not embarrassed.
But, of course, back in '92, we didn't have all of this Hi-Tech CGI and other special effects stuff... so what we -by "we", I mean the viewers- saw was realistic, all performed by people.
This looked VERY realistic back then because of the equipment used along with the year itself...
lol really scary stuff, i remmember watching this with my folks when it was broadcast, it was really scary and the demonic voice nursery ryhme thing chills me even now! i think watching it today it has revealed a lot about the hidden gay inuendo in the programme the Transexual spook who lives in the "GLORY HOLE"...lol most people wouldn't know what a glory hole is! hehe....dead funny!!
I've wanted to see this for so long, and it didn't disapoint. This is truly one of the smartest and best scares I've ever seen. I love how the suspense is build up and with all those quick glimpses of weird shit through the show and then everything takes a turn down Silent Hill in the finally. Pure genius! People making horror today needs to see this and learn. We don't need lots of bad cg and blood. It's what you don't show that is scary.
uhg for a mo i actualy thought it was real but then they aded that cheesy footage in the studio spoild it, but good job, you managed toscare me half to death :D
that kicked ass! to think that this was one of the first of its kind to be done and everyone lost their minds about it, wow! I wish I had seen it then....but then again I was only 3 at the time so I guess it's better that I do not suffer from childhood traumas by watching this, hehe
loved everything about it, how they played mind tricks on the viewers to make them think they're crazy, and all of the sightings of pipes that they never really point out, but you have to really look to see.
Holy sh!t.... How ABSOLUTELY terrifying!!! I wish I had watched this that night in 1992... that is so scary. And you never know what happened to them!!!!! AHHHHHHHHH!!!!
Didn't have any real scares, a bit disappointing in that way, and had a few cheesy moments I thought it could do without (ie the wind in the studio), but overall I thought it was brilliant. Great atmosphere and writing.
Thank's I have searched the web a few times but couldn't find it anywhere.......It was a laugh when we heard the BEEB had recieved loads of complaints from "adults" who were scared shitless some people aren't for real !
I found out that a sequel for this, called "31/10", came out a few years ago, its a short story in a book called "Dark Corners", its written by the same guy who did ghostwatch.
I dont really know much, I only found out about it from wikipedia. The book was written by a guy called Stephen Volk, Google would probably know more.
Yes it was all fake filmed if memory serves me right 3-4 weeks before hand. It was the writers wanting to tell a good ghost story and wanted to not spoof but make commentary of televsion programs of the day, so to speak
You're gullible because the person replying to you was joking around, making you look like an idiot. They already knew what it was but you went and explained it anyways.
@Comedian80 ha ha hee he tranny paedo ghosts from the glory hole! Surely someone should have figured out at the time that it was a hoax when it was discovered that he was a cross dressing psycho in the glory hole, obviously I ddnt I was only 11 but my parents could have bloody told me at the time! LMAO!
i was 10 years old when this was on and i was at my nanna's house, and her and irish john (her partner) was out, there were some woods at the back of the house which didnt help matters either so with this programme you could say that i was shit scared and it was the longest night of my life waiting for everyone to come back home... cant believe they left me alone on halloween lol
I was 12 then, still nothing has matched how scared this program made me feel. The beauty of it is that we trusted Parky and Sarah Greene as house hold names, and never thought they would pull the wool over our eyes like that. Today it would never be re-thought, to the extent of having a kids TV presenter involved with a child molesting ghost, this must have caused most of the complaints. I think it still stands out, and was well ahead of its time, Blair Witch totally owes to it. GB's WOTW!
Due to timing constraints they had to drop the orignal ending where Dr. Peter Venkman and his crew burst in through the door of the house and zap pipes, but just when all seems well a shattering thud breaks the scilence, as it turns out piped used the power of the seance to assume the most monstrous form imaginable... THE STAY PUFF MARSHMALLOW MAN!
14yrs old at the time and my mate was staying over, we both ended up same end of my bed hugging each other ny this point waiting for the fucker to burst out the tv. I have never been so scared in my life, truely brilliant
Thanks for putting this on. I've been waiting so long to see this again. I remember watching alone in my bedroom in the dark when I was 12. Not as scared now as I was then but I still think Sarah Greene is hot.
I don't get why people say "it looks like crap now". It did get far-fetched near the ending with the whole national séance thing but apart from that it was very believable (if you're willing to open your mind of course)
I was on holiday in America when this was on and everyone was talking abot it when i came back, Im so glad I finally got to watch it 16 yrs later lol!
OMG I have been looking for this for years! I was 9yrs of age when this was on..halloween was on a school night, and I remember coming back from trick or treating just to sit and watch this... It was so scary.. they did advertise a programme to be on, which is why he says about them running over. But it was all part of their brilliant halloween line up.
BBC have always been brilliant for live dramas - Like Quatermass Experiment.
it doesnt matter how fake it was its a fuckin horror film like!!its not meant to be a hoax its a drama, thats why it opens with a written by credit!!its still scary as fuck tho!!i was only born in 1992 but i still know scary when i see it
and if made today with todays technology but made to equal design and effort of this program years ago it'd be believable now, you say it wouldn't but if you had no idea whether it was real or not you would believe it.
CAMPKILLGEMMA - your comment is ridiculous. I was 11 and I have never shaken so so much in my life. Remember, this was before Yvette Fielding and that Idiot Derek Acorah came on our screens with that most haunted crap. I have just watched for the first time in 15 years and its clearly scripted, but what you have to remember is that Sarah Greene advertised this on going live on Saturday morning. A guy killed himself after watching it. The BBC fucked up I think hence it being banned forever...
It was obviously fake no matter if watched now or in 1992. And the guy who killed himself became obsessed with this show. That is not BBC's fault. They did not screw up. People just lost their minds. This is obviously a tv drama and the ghosts obviously did not take over the studio.
I am not going to ask how old you are because its clear from your comment that you never saw this the first time it was on or were even alive for that fact. There were no mobiles, youtube, DVD's, ANYTHING back then. This was as real as it got. 11 year olds now a days are completely different from those back then. BELIEVE me.
when I was 11 I wud say I was pretty gullible and all my m8s of the same age were. Kids 2day av access 2 more info and r desensitized by modern techn now, they c far worse in video games and certain harry potter films now so I knw my kids of that age group wud not b fooled by it but we were not used 2anythin worse realy except 4crap special FX in old horror films which r poorly done and laughable bac then and nowadays but cos this was done realistic we realy thought it was real at the time.
I was 11 and watched it alone. Shit myself. it may look fake now, but at the time its presented by the popular tv and kids show presenters, it appears live, it is happening in an everyday house not recorded in an old castle. And it has the parts to make you think oh its a hoax, but then shows pipes but dosnt point it out...more tricks to the brain. You dont need blood and guts to scare people, just suspence, rare sightings, thinking youve seen something etc Great show at the time.
@binhawk When I was 11 and watched it I was convinced that it was real but only whilst watchin it. The nxt day I was told it was a hoax and I heard bout all the complaints the BBC got aftawards but if I was 2show this 2 my 11 yr old son now he wud knw straight away it is a drama and made up wit actors cos the actin is crap compared 2 wot hes seein nowadays and kids 2day aint gullable and as innocent as they were then, iv got 3 kids and none of em wud fall 4 it now. I agree wit u
Wot guy who killed himself cos he was obsessed wit the show? I watchd in 1992 when I was 11 but I neva heard that some1 had committed suicide over it. Or were u referrin 2the ghost "pipes" in this made up drama? The BBC never gave a warnin that it was intended as a drama on the night of viewin, altho apparently it was published b4hand in certain TVguides that it was a drama and sum of the actors in it were well knwn but at 11 I ddnt knw that so it scared the hell outta me I thought it was real!
lol how can anyone believe this was real. I was 6 when this was broadcasted, even though I wasnt allowed to watch it, even if I did I probably knew it was fake.
This progrm looks crap now but when I watched it I was 12 years old and it scared me to near death. It f*cked me up. Well done. Thanks for adding this
Its deeper than that. I kind of knew it wasn't really real, but it is still scarey. The reason it is scarey is that they are playing on very real fears, that having nothing to do with ghosts.

On one side the ending is stupid and overdone because BBC wouldn't be crazy on loosing Parkinson over a hoax.
On the other, it is pretty well done in a creepy factor. The build of 'real' to 'shit just GOT real' is great.

I don't get why people say "it looks like crap now". It did get far-fetched near the ending with the whole national séance thing but apart from that it was very believable (if you're willing to open your mind of course)

I was on holiday in America when this was on and everyone was talking abot it when i came back, Im so glad I finally got to watch it 16 yrs later lol!

i just watched the whole thing for the first time, and it's honestly one of the best pieces of horror i've ever seen!

A seriously decent piece of television - a now rare example of what the BBC does best.
And they won't repeat it?! Bollocks! Let's campaign!

BBC have always been brilliant for live dramas - Like Quatermass Experiment.

and if made today with todays technology but made to equal design and effort of this program years ago it'd be believable now, you say it wouldn't but if you had no idea whether it was real or not you would believe it.
eaglewings8 3 years ago
i disagree, if they made it now, they'd ruin it with CG
misterlaufeyson 3 years ago 4
Absolutely. What's scary in a GHOST story is what you're NOT seeing, what's IMPLIED.

But you can see why people 16 years ago thought it was real

CAMPKILLGEMMA - your comment is ridiculous. I was 11 and I have never shaken so so much in my life. Remember, this was before Yvette Fielding and that Idiot Derek Acorah came on our screens with that most haunted crap. I have just watched for the first time in 15 years and its clearly scripted, but what you have to remember is that Sarah Greene advertised this on going live on Saturday morning. A guy killed himself after watching it. The BBC fucked up I think hence it being banned forever...
binhawk 3 years ago
It was obviously fake no matter if watched now or in 1992. And the guy who killed himself became obsessed with this show. That is not BBC's fault. They did not screw up. People just lost their minds. This is obviously a tv drama and the ghosts obviously did not take over the studio.

I am not going to ask how old you are because its clear from your comment that you never saw this the first time it was on or were even alive for that fact. There were no mobiles, youtube, DVD's, ANYTHING back then. This was as real as it got. 11 year olds now a days are completely different from those back then. BELIEVE me.
binhawk 2 years ago 2
What do mobiles, YouTube, and DVDs have to do with anything?
11 year olds are different nowadays? What, you mean they are smarter? Not gullible?
AdamfMc 2 years ago
when I was 11 I wud say I was pretty gullible and all my m8s of the same age were.

Lindsey282010 2 years ago

Well done. Thanks for adding this
kat743 3 years ago
Its deeper than that. I kind of knew it wasn't really real, but it is still scarey. The reason it is scarey is that they are playing on very real fears, that having nothing to do with ghosts.
