  • One thing Russia does best is celebrate.

Also i would not say Russia picked up much from Byzantine Empire, mostly it was Greek part of Byzantine empire or just Greece. Russia/Ukraine learned and obtain much from Greek culture and wise versa. Russian church transcends Greek Orthodoxy with in it's design. Of course Russia has it's own culture yet one must give Credit where credit is do.

  • In Russia passed a law restricting the use of fireworks.

And the fireworks in Moscow only run of the special places. And Moscow is 50 km in diameter ... Red Square is just one of those places.

  • let's be correct, it was bilt on the order of Ivan IV (the Terriible) in 1555-61, XVIth century :)

By that time Columbus not just had discovered America, but for half a century was already dead.

  • Comment removed

  • @DiscoverRussia

No, the Saint Basil's Cathedral was built by Russian architect Postnik Yakovlev on the order of Russian Tsar Ivan IV in 16th century(1555-1560).

The American continent was discovered by Christopher Columbus in the 15th century(1492).

  • @TheMastakov: фейерверки не НАД Василием Блаженным, а далеко ЗА ним.

  • Death to America

  • Глупые америкосы))

  • @sansez

You're an idiot, a new decade begins from zero

  • @laticq

There is no year zero in Cristian calendar, so the year AD 1 immediately follows the year 1 BC. So leave your insults for yourself

  • @sansez

Maybe some cons or geeks think that new decade starts on 1st of January 2011 (like some geeks told us that new millennium starts on 1 st January 2001), but all normal people celebrated this yesterday.

  • +1))

  • @sansez, everyone with a modicum of education knows that a zero precedes a one. Hence, the time period from 2000 to 2009 does in fact constitute a decade. Good luck and please do stay in school.

  • Your life begins on day one. Year one ends twelve months later, when you are one. Your tenth year ends ten years after the day of your birth - on the last (and not the first) day and then you are ten.

Thus the 20th Century ended on 31/12/2000 - despite the millennium hype at the change of 19 to 20 in the year number.

Also the "noughties" will end on 31st December, 2010 and the next decade will start on 1st January on 2011.

  • A decade is simply a group of 10 years.

By saying the 19th, 20th, 21st century etc. you are defining which set of 100 years. since there was no year 0, the first year ended on December 31st, year 1. Making it so that the 10th year ended on Dec 31st year 10, and the 100th year on Dec 31st year 100. So the 20th century ended on Dec 31st 2000.The second melenia ended on Dec 31st 2000.The next decade will begin on 1 Jan 2011

And the decade of the 10s will begin on Jan 1, 2010

  • @sparta

You're just to dumb to undestand anything.

There is no year zero in Cristian calendar, so the year AD 1 immediately follows the year 1 BC.

So next time follow, your own advice and stay in school

  • lol

  • ееееееее РОССИЯ

  • Happy New Year Russia and the rest of the World!

Make a new beginning and don't make mistakes that were made in the previous year.

    God Bless!

  • happy new yaer bro

  • In Russia there is still the old new year - January 14.

  • I think I enjoyed London's display the most. They have definitely improved a lot.

But the fireworks over that palace is just beautiful. Even the palace on its on is amazing. What is it called? I forget.

  • ERRR! It isn't a palace... It's the Kremlin.

You know... The russian parliament ?

  • @Juicexlx Actually this is St. Basil Cathedral. You can see Kremlin in the background-it's the old fortress wall with towers built for defense around old city. It is not quite the same as Pariament-separate building, called White House (no joke).

  • Cheers! It doesn't really matter what I thought it was. It was just so lovely I thought that it must be a palace. I never thought it was a cathedral.

    But anyway, thank you.

  • That is beautiful.

  • happy new year, world!

let it be the way you feel right, and let us all have strenght to accept our choice,

  • Surely Russia is smarter than the West?

Seeing as 2011 is the end of the decade!

  • Dude decade begins with 0 and ends with 9.

  • @SuperTankT95

No. 1 is beginning 10 is end. Just like 2001 was the beginning of the new millenium.

    Trust me buddy :-)

  • We celebrated new millenium in 2000 !

  • We in Russia a little differently calculates the time.

    serfing is really nice there

  • Ура!!!

  • Russia a great country! Cheers! With new 2010 year!

  • Sure did beat those "evil nazis and hitler." Too bad for 10s-of-millions of Ukrainian and Russian Christians under Marxist rule. Oh well.

HAPPY NEW YEAR to the REAL Russia!

  • HNY to the real asshole=)))

  • Hmmm, would you say the Russians in Czarist Russia were more friendly?

  • Russianes are people. You want to say west was always friendly? West in our time is evil and always was. What you answer for this?

  • And this said the man from nation that killed over 22 milliones slavs. You must say thankes to communists that you still alife and your nation.

  • 22 million? Where do you get this number? Germany didn't have enough time to off 22 million Slavs, even if it wanted to.

It wasn't about Slavs. That was just propaganda. Adolf the Great was mainly against the Marxists.

Remember, Genrikh Yagoda, Lavrentiy Beria, Lazar Kaganovich...?

  • @LibertaerUeberAlles

Don't worry. We will always remember Generalplan Ost, Drang nach Osten, Lebensraum, Soviet POWs...

AndrewPowergo made a slight mistake: Nazis murdered 27 millions of Soviet citizens. There were a lot more Slavs that Nazis killed in other countries.

  • Well IgorRusland, I suppose we can fabricate all kinds of numbers to fit the desired effect. Wasn't it the Soviet regime which gave the world 4M for Auschwitz? -- now suddenly downgraded to 1M...a number that's probably still exorbitantly high by a factor of 10.

  • My four great-grandfather were killed by the Germans. They were not Marxists, they were not professional soldiers. My two grandfathers fought, too. They were the militias and protect the homeland/

  • @shchvasilii, I'm sorry to hear that. It's certainly a good reason to not have wars.

BTW, hasn't it now been confirmed that Stalin and his Marxist cabal planned to invade westward?

  • Nope. Trotsky and Co wanted to do that. Their final goal was Planetary Revolution. Russia was their testing ground. Stalin was a lot more practical: he wanted strong and stable country under his rule. All communist maniacs with "pure ideas" stood in his way. Thus he axed one and destroyed the ComIntern as well.

  • It seems to be undisputed that Stalin planned to attack Germany. For example, you can search the Net for:

"Examining Stalin's 1941 Plan to Attack Germany"

His speech to the Military Academy suggest that he wanted to "spread socialism worldwide" or something like that.

Many other articles on this topic exist.

  • I see it a bit differently. It is undisputed that Stalin wasn't dumb. He understood that sooner or later he will have to fight Nazis or Britain. He understood the nature of both regimes and their hatred towards USSR.

  • However, there is a very long road from "thinking about it" to actually doing that. It is the same thing like I would start accusing Truman's government in preparing attack against USSR before 1949, utilizing the advantage of having A-bomb. We know for sure that they were planning to do so BUT they never done it, therefore, it is a useless discussion.

  • @IgorRusland

Stalin knew about the a bomb that is why he didnt lieberate all of europe. Just like you said Stalin was not dumb, he was alot smarter than hitler, but he had a criminal mind.

  • No arguing, Stalin used Medieval methods to rule in XX century.

Though A-bomb in itself is a very serious argument, consolidated economic and military power of other Allies was too much to handle for Soviet Army. He did realize that.

  • Funny you IgorRusland are talking history and politics which is very important and you guys are in the negative and the others that are lost enjoying pretty lights are over positive. Funny how the sleeping masses are are so cute being so DUMB. Good discussion by the way.

  • I am from Toronto Canada....Believe me, when I say that Toronto fireworks display was the dullest of all.

  • Happy New Year!!!

  • Happy new year dear Russia, from Mexico with love¡¡¡¡

  • ☭★НОВОМ ГОДОМ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!☭★

  • >That castle looks incredible.

Indeed. Though it is the cathedral. :-) It was built as tribute to conquering of Kazan' khanate by russian tsardom in time of Ivan IV the Formidable.

  • Typical Russian orthodox church? Wrong. There is none like it. Check ths history.

  • Happy New Year Russia! All the best to you and wishing your modest desires come true!

  • No shit dude! Some towns in USA are 3rd world

  • the guy who is a "mushroom cult" is Ivan the terrible or Ivan IV it was constructed in 1555 and Is a typical Russian orthodox church

  • Please, not "terrible", but the Formidable. Od may be you think city of Groznyj should be translated as "city of Terrible"? It is the same word for tsar' and for the city on rus. language. Formidable - the most correct variant.

  • Not misinformed. This is not the style of the Orthodox religion. This is a style of the pagan Russian architecture. And in addition to Russia, it does not meet more country in the world. Orthodox style - a miserable white-stone church with a bath, who came to Russia from Greece.

  • Happy Ner Year Russia.....!!!

  • was that Monument built by a Mushroom Cult or something?

  • made from inspiration of Typical Russian architecture I think

  • It is a temple built in honor of St. Basil's Cathedral. Such "locks" a lot in Russia, in the following cities: Peterburg, Yaroslavl, Vladimir, Kostroma, Samara...This is an architectural style called "Russian style".

Yesterday in Russia was the Old New Year.

  • HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY!!

  • C NOVOM GODOM! Happy New Year 2010!

  • Happy New Year from Sweden!! I gonna visit Moscow in 2010!! I really love Russians, Russia and Russian language!! :)

  • Russia is a legitimate country with a legitimate

government. If I'm not mistaken, born of it's own various peoples. Most of it's struggles internal. That's how the Japanese frabricate a good sword. I could be corrected by a Russian. One thing i'm sure of Putin is a patriot of, and loves Russia.

U.S. is occupied by foreigners. The Government is controlled by organized criminals. The presidents are bought and paid for as prositutes.

    Happy New Year!

  • both countries have many problems- socially, politically, etc. what you said about U.S. was/is also true in many ways for Russia.

  • Happy new year to all and to the glorious Russian people! Long live French-Russian friendship! Let's hope 2010 brings France and Russia closer and Europe and Russia closer! Long live our friendship! Vive notre amitié!

  • Happy new year to everyone!

  • PeAcE! + Social Justice, happy New Cycle!

    Stay Human!

  • Beautifull building looks like a fairytale castle. Wishing You All a very Happy New Year In 2010 We can take what ever gets thrown at us in the world as long as we stay united in caring for all Humanity.

    Peace to all

    Good ridance to 2009

  • architecture similar to St. Basil's Cathedral where he was seen on video, completing the buildings in this style is much in Russia, in different cities. The national Russian style arhtiektury, which you do not see in other countries, although Russian immigrants were built in other countries, it is.

  • look at Wikipedia says: Russian_Revival_architecture. It says that this Russian-Byzantine style. From Byzantium were taken only unnecessary bathing, there are buildings in this style, and without bathing, that is entirely in the Russian style

  • Ussr 4 ever.

  • happy new year from the Republic of Ireland....though I'm a little cynical that this year will be any better economic downfall, probably a war or two, two (guranteed) wars in Afghanistan/Iraq.

I'm sure there will be some good things but just well another year of burrocratic school for me to go back to...........anyway enjoy for you optamists whatever part of the world you belong to...
