These paintings are, at best, first year student quality even if they are driven by notions of banality, image overload or just plain cynicism/irony. I see so much work like this nowadays that it has become the norm. Young painters might think that this is what they should be doing to make it. It's all very trite.
@thing4asians He's received an outstanding amount of praise from the European art intelligentsia, and been supported by people like Saatchi. But, you could be right.
@thing4asians I have my doubts as you should be able to tell from my comments in the vid, but if you saw as much painting as I do, then you'd know that doubts are not necessarily a bad thing. The fact that these works caused you to respond says something, no?
THANKS JAMES!!! I love Sasnal's work! I had no idea he was so up and coming! I'm excited for him. I thought he was my amazing obscure european painter. not anymore. :)
I like the paintings even if the palettes don't always sit well with me. I'm sure it's just my personal taste, but beyond that he's got a lot of interesting procedural mark making.
I like the monochromatic pieces and their texture. He's much better when he gets away from the Tuymans-Dumas influence that makes his paintings so artificial, forced, trite and wan. The figurative pieces I find completely uninteresting (even the form-massing in the shadows). 7.00 looks like a second-rate Kippenberger, 7.40 like a flat second-rate Kiefer without the surface...
Review of older WS show from NYC, in Google search: Mr. Sasnal's surfaces are noticeably not seductive, his subtexts are all but obscure, and his mediums are tacitly impure, even if they mix mostly in the mind of the beholder. (THe opening street guitarist is pretty good! He seems so much more honest and straightforward than the artist)
@TomHendricksMusea all you do is whine and make other peoples points. You are just a complainer who is trying to get traffic to your own stupid youtube page. You know nothing and i'm tired of reading your self promotition masked as critique :)
