IMO the only canon pairing in XII was Vaan/Penelo... and Rassler/Ashe.

And I always thought that it was Basch/Ashe (though I love Balthier/Ashe) because of that part in the ending where Ashe is all like "I miss Balthier"

Canon is what exists. Final Fantasy XII the game is the canon, and in the game, there is no established relationship between Ashe and Balthier. So anything Balthier/Ashe is considered fanon since they don't actually hook up. The only really canon relationship in the game is Rasler and Ashe since they, ya know, get married :)

But it's fun to speculate :)
