the point is challenging yourself weather its fear of hights or the actual stamina it takes to do it, its just like anything else. racing, football, ect.
Well, it's a bit like loWHITEYol says - and to me additionally one way of moving through nature. If you want to go around to get to a peak - suit yourself - I'd like to be able to choose my own way of getting there.
Bro, ice climbing is by far the most demanding sport known to man. You have very little grip despite tabers on your shoes. Your picks are your hands, and you can only hope for the Glacier to not swallow you whole. Ice has the most interesting chemistry, it expands when temperature drops, and it cuts sharper than a razor. Freeze has little tolerance for our Mammalian body temps. You can break bones in places and not necessarily know about it, until you do a night check and see purple tissue.
As a rock climber, that's what I thought, but in order to "get it" you need to do it. I did it and I have to say it changed the way I think about ice climbing. It takes a lot of stamina and a whole different set of skills to rock climbing.
I do not get ice climbing. What is the point? Seems like the same move over and over again.

The line is about an hour away from Trondheim, Norway.
Haven't heard of a 2nd ascent? Who would be as stupid as we were then. Was great fun in retrospective, though ;-) Thanks for you post!
