Susbsidies are useful when you want to produce innovative and individual product. If you rely purely on audience-driven revenue you're going to get generic, lowest-common-denominator movies MOST of the time.

Hollywood produces some great movies but it also creates an awful lot of junk-film in the process.

By the way, Im proud to call myself an european. No one denies that we live in different countries shaped by different cultures and languages, but our lives(of the people living in Europe) are much more interconnected than you realize. In my family line there is greek, bulgarian turkish and god knows what else blood. If you want to live in the past, so be it no one has died to ask Norway to join, quite frankly we couldn't care less. Just don't judge the ones that have decided to join.

The idea of EU is good, but I think that European contries have got to make their own laws, because they are independent countries and not part of the United States of Europe. Sadly, that's the way it has become. Anyway, who made up this idea of being European? First of all, I'm from the place where I grew up. And all that talk of being European as if all European are the same, because they're not, there are many different languages and cultures. EU is just propaganda.

i think what europe has in common is the old history and old architecture. in old days the dynasty of Habsburks ruled big chunk of Europe, few different counries in one kingdom. Europe is very interconnected. the bigest separation ever was in communist times. now it is melting together. i do believe there is such a thing as being Europian.

Perhaps the language was shared, but there are instances where countries share languages but are not unified due to cultural differences (for instance, Austria and Germany).

So, I don't agree that a unified Europe is infeasible.

Actually a great part of European Integration is inspired by the great Federation that is the USA (except the part of subservience to God). The US did it going East to West, while Europe is accomplishing it going West to East. Despite obvious cultural differences, Europeans share and aspire to keep so many of the same values that Americans do and vice versa.
