As much as I enjoyed Chris Sarandon's performance in Dog Day, I felt that I would have preferred to see John Cazale nominated as his performance as Sal was phenomenal. Would have been nice to see Brad Dourif win though.

Originally Jack Benny was tapped for the role of Al Lewis (Willy Clark did all the yelling !), but his pancreas, which had screwed him once before by going diabetic, screwed him once more by developing cancer ! What he thought was stubborn indigestion, was the pain of terminal cancer... He was unable to attend an award ceremony in his honor, due to the pain and he underwent tests that discovered the truth.He died 2 weeks later.

Hmmm. I like George, but I wish he had at least mentioned Jack Benny, who had been cast in this part-and who recomended Burns for the part-but was too sick to actually make the movie. I always wondered if Benny could have won had he made the film...that would have been tremendous.

I loved the movie and I'm happy he got the Oscar.. but looking back.. I think Brad Dourif should have won it. One of the most memorable performances ever on the big screen. Still happy George got it though.

I liked Burns in "Sunshine Boys," but Robert Shaw should have won for "Jaws."

That being said, Burns was second best of the nominees after Dourif.

Burns got it for his time in the business.  Dourif was most deserving of any award for a supporting role that year.

George Burns was adorable. He sure was something. I loved Jack Benny alot also and he must have missed him and also Gracie when they both died rather early.

George Burns and jack Benny were the best of friends and Benny was suppose to be in The Sunshine Boys but he died before filming could start so they asked Burns......and he walked away with the Oscar. It also started a renaissance for him at the age of 79 since he started a second career after this that went on until his death at age 100.

Scorps is correct. George Burns replaced Jack Benny, although it was done before Benny died. He in fact personally recommended that George Burns should take the part when he became seriously ill. Walter Matthau replaced Red Skelton, who also pulled out (various reasons have been suggested.)

Hearing Linda Blair's voice, does anyone really believe she deserved an Oscar in 1973? Her performance in "The Exorcist" is only noteworthy for Mercedes McCambridge's superb dubbing work, and the make-up and visual effects.
