This is pretty basic stuff. I would check leaks from the pressure line or return line first. They are easiest to replace. But, if the problem is the unit itself, the key issue here is "the loaner tool program!" You can save about 40 bucks this way. Don't buy tools you will only use every 15 years or so. Sure, these guys show the easy way, but youtube is full of other videos to help you out. It ain't rocket science. Danno
one thing i feel really interesting is, when they advertise some mechanic work, the car/truck they use is so large that they can literately stand inside the compartment to do the work easily, while for my car, it looks like I need to tear the entire front apart to have the work done, shame!
Just a heads up...the guys that work at these places like Advance Auto Parts only pretend to know what they are talking about. They are not mechanics. Mechanics work on cars and have experience and can share accurate information. These guys are parts boys that want to be respected so they tell people things even though they are not qualified. A mechanic makes good money and a parts boy doesn't. A mechanic tells you what part you need and you tell the parts boy what part you need.
I'm sorry, but isn't it suppose to be the purpose of this video to instruct you visually on how to remove/change your power steering pump? So that being said, why in hell should I need to purchase a Haynes Manual? Gotta love how they push sales! It's pretty much an easy task!
This guy kind of reminds me of Kyle Busch from Nascar..lol.. And I wish I could change mine as fast as this video was....But I ALREADY know I won't....Lots of finger smashing and profanaties will be said in my yard....lol
I recently hydroplaned my 2006 Mazda3 into a ditch and hit a bunch of trees. Had to replace front left shock and spring assembly, and a couple other suspension parts on the left front and rear. As well as the left side tires and wheels. Now the steering is very heavy and wont move unless I move it (even if I turn the wheel all the way to the left or right). There is also a noise like metal rubbing, but only when I turn it to the left from center position. Does anybody know what might be wrong?
@waddyprocess I asked a couple of Auto Zone guys and they said it might be the ball-bearing for the steering or something...I've done all I can so I'm just gonna take it to a shop. Thanks though man.

I like how they choose not to include an example sound of this problem happening. Makes this video fucking useless trying to diagnose the noise coming from my steering wheel.
hi friend... I have a problem with my car, cause I did replace the power steering pump and gear box, but my steering wheel some time is really hard for turn , I was looking for some leak oil but all is clean; someone can help me
then you have bigger fish to fry. This is why "we" advise people on repairs, and replace specific parts only on request and do not guarantee a fix unless we know the issue. replacing parts at random gets expensive quickly
@daysbleedtonight32 lol i had 2 take the top of the shroud off then the pulley b4 i could remove the pump on my 89 c1500! It's so close to the fan i barely could get the puller in there lol. then the pressure line wouldn't separate form the back of the pump with out both bolts coming loose and there was no room back there to use 2 wrenches lol dude it was a B$%^H
@hotrodrico..thanks for responding. Once, the weather gets warm, i'll try to get my friend to let me help. Its been a while and i do need to refresh since viewing this..and, yeah..im praying her infiniti is so like this and no extra. U guys gonna make a basic mechanic out of me yet!! Thank u!!
I have a 99 Olds Alero. The pump as an actuator. Adavance doesn't sell a pump with the actuator. NAPA does. I started to swap the actuator with an Advance pump, stopped halfway, to complicated, went to NAPA. The pulley tool took some getting used to. There has to be a better way. I didn't note how far the pulley was on. No problem for me as I have another care with the same engine, but if you change one note how far the pulley is on the shaft. The video needed a lot more detail.
@kristoph1000 ask my ass! 2 local AAP stores have horrible service....... That dudes working there are so rude, and 90% of the time I have to wait in store for 20+ minutes to pick up an online order cuz they do not prepare them for pick up, some don't even know how to process online orders.
i liked this video but one question for a newbie...u reverse order everthing & hope i dont nick an o-ring but whats the procedure for bleeding??? refill the resevoir then turn car on and turn wheels ok, then let it idle & check level...so, do i keep the top off the unit while it bleeds??? i used these vids to change a starter & alt. & hopefully, I can help my friend with her infini I30 ps because she's refilling it every few days & its hard to drive
@ballershanelle WHEN YOU BLEED POWERSTEERING SYSTEMS YOU, START WITH THE WHEELS BOTH FORWARD, FILL TO THE MAX LINE, THEN START THE CAR, AND IN PARK TURN THE STEERING WHEEL SLOWLY COMPLETELY TO ONE SIDE AND THEN THE OTHER, IT WILL BUBBLE AND DRINK A LIL BIT AS IT CIRCULATES, SO IF THE LEVEL IN THE RESOVIOR DROPS JUST ADD TILL YOURE BACK UP TO MAX, PUT THE TOP ON, GO FOR A RIDE LIKE 8 BLOCKS OR SO, AND SEE WHERE ITS AT ONCE ITS HOT, IF YOU HAVE TO ADD, DO SO AND YOU SHOULD BE GOOD..
@experienced163052675 YES, YOU SHOULD IF NOT EQUIPT ON THE NEW PUMP, THAT MAGNET REMOVES METAL SHAVINGS AND DEBRIS THAT CAN CAUSE WEAR ON THE PUMP INTERNALS IF LEFT TO CIRCULATE THROUGH THE SYSTEM... SO ITS A GOOD THING TO HAVE IN THERE.. WHAT KINDA CAR IS IT?
Shit. The pump just went on my 85 Z28. As if I didnt have enough shit to fix on it. I know a bit about cars, but not enough to fix it on my own. Looks like I'll be building up arm muscles for a while, lol.
GM power steering pumps - what a scam. How many millions of these unfriendly pieces of junk are out there? This is NOT a simple procedure, especially if you need the vehicle. Signed in blood from my busted knuckles.
Im so sick of replacing my pump on my 3.8 1999 olds 88. Im on my 4th pump and Im getting the rebuild kit this time. This thing loves to blow o-rings. I think its because it has rack and pinion. Hit one good pothole and say goodbye to the o-rings.
@Bastige56 My advice: You have to make sure the fluid level is always high. I've been through 4 pumps too. If you get a leak on the motorway though you won't know it. a hundred mile drive with a dry pump and you can say goodbye to that sucker. a replacement pump for my Mustang with shipping and vat and duties comes to around £300 at least even if I put it in myself. It gets expensive and tiresome so you got to constantly monitor it.
lol i have a chevy impala with a 3.8 v6 pulled mine out in 20 mins put the new one in and 30 mins....add that up thas 50 mins so less then an hour. then again this aint my first rodeo but its simple. and i did mine in the barracks parking lot :D
Ha! try this on a 1998 Camry 6 cylinder. total nightmare you cant reach anything through the wheel drum. Savings are big tho and the car is still running.
@TheBeerBox80 thank god im not the only one... i volunteered to do it on my mom's oldsmobile silhouette. its front wheel, v6, gm, and sucks balls to work on.
yeah....I've been screwing with this for about....2 days now? the kit just doesn't work as well as I want it to. after a certain time, the installation "kit" starts to unscrew while tightening the pulley on. I'm not fond of this design.
I did this using a pump I got at Advance Auto Parts last year....I have to do it again because Advance Parts are made of the same stuff they make gummie bears out of.
this movie was crap, it didnt tell you anything, it even went further to not tell you anything by telling you to buy a tool instead of showing the basic normal way to reattach the pulley. it didnt tell you how to re tighten the belt, and especially didnt tell you how many bolts and where there located (or hidden bolts if there common)
i would never shop at this store considering there blatent advertising over being helpful...
@gearjammn because thats a great way to learn right? blow all of your money at a mechanics....which im guessing you are. gotta learn somehow dude...and some people are just plain retarded when it comes to certain things....who cares if u know more about cars, and where on the drivers test do i have to tighten a belt?..
maybe your just a retard and shouldnt be doing maintenance....retighten belt lmao put the belt on and retitght the serpentine belt bolt genius its called reverse order
It didn't tell you these things because every car has a different way of re tightening the belt, different amount of bolts, and different locations of the pump or bolts. This video tells you the basics and the rest is just stuff you should be able to figure out yourself. If you can't do that then you shouldn't be working on your cars.
