You got that right, people assume Montana was great because of Jerry Rice. What people forget to realize that before they drafted Rice, they were a 15-1 team the year prior and won the Super Bowl with the likes of Freddie Solomon, Russ Francis, Dwight Clark and Wendell Tyler. And while I'm on my soapbox, does anyone remember the receivers he was passing to before Rice? well he put up 15,500+ yards throwing to Dwight Clark and Freddie Solomon. Not exactly big name receivers that you can make the excuse that he had a lot of help. Joe was a great passing QB pure and simple if anything HE made mediocre receivers look great. And yes Marino was a very good pure passing QB but never pulled it out in the big games that is true. Farve? best? no! Not even in the top 10.

Thanks for posting, great memories seeing Joe. Oh and just for the record for those of you that don't know any better, Joe passed for nearly half his total yards with the Niners and two of the Super Bowl wins before they ever drafted Rice in 85. It was a great time to be a fan as you knew Joe was going to win most of the time and could come back at any time. The great quote from SB XXIII by Collingsworth after they scored to go ahead was "I looked up and knew we left too much time for # 16."
