  • #9raoul we can dream but I'm almost positive that is asking too much lol

  • not enough views of tina laying down the groove

  • Looks like the crowd is on heroin, let alone smoking weed.

  • i'd like to see phish do stop making sense with david byrne!!! lol. is that asking too much? i fear the closest i'll get to that was seeing stop making sense played on the cinema at phish's superball.

  • Real in a way that seems to have vanished... Belew channels Louis over autistic chant. Beats the hell out of that later movie thing, the cinemagraphic opposite of film noir. Saw that one on stage and wish it had been this. Heads at their best.

  • Wow all you heads fans wudnt know a joke if it smacked u in the face!!! HaHa

  • If you knew your music, you'd know that one of Phish's biggest influences was Talking Heads, and that THEY did this Heads cover, not the other way around!!

  • david is friends with phish, there is an interview where they are all in it discussing music, im sure he is cool with phish covering cities and crosseyed and painless, phish has nothing but the upmost respect for the heads, so theres no need for bickering.

  • fish stinks with age but head never gets old

  • Belew is great and his pants are ridiculous

  • speed more lke

  • i just watched talking heads version of cities

  • @SuperSniperbunny This isn't a Phish song dumbass. Phish covers it.

  • David. There's only one David.

  • find myself a city to live in And i mnever find a better one than Amsterdam Pity Paris Pity N,Y. I find myself a city to live in

  • I'd never heard of Phish before reading this & after hearing their atrocious handling of 'Cities' where they lost the entire meaning of the song I ain't surprised.Absolute musical heresy.

  • Killer!

    Always trust the original

  • And Adrian Belew was the only one who had not snorted coke beforehand. God bless them. :=D

  • I'm a huge fan of both Phish and Talking Heads. And having seen Phish play this live, I have to say I like both versions equally. They're just different. This sound is why I love Talking Heads so much, and Phish's version is why I love them so much. Why can't we all just get along?! haha :P

  • theres adrian belew!

  • Jerry Harrison's playing is rivaled only by Andy Gill from Gang of Four. Very similar approach with the apparent randomness of angular guitar strikes.

  • Lots of blow going down in the 80's. i wonder why? ASk Ronny. G.H.W.

  • I love the Talking Heads.

  • No talk, only head.

  • At 2:46 David says "one time for Ringo". Does anyone know if he said that in other performances? Around this time Ringo Starr was in a pretty bad car accident and I was wondering if maybe that is why David said that line. Can anyone old enough remember?

  • we got it simple =]

  • we got it simple =]

  • Blah blah blah, look at me i'm so cool that I have nothing to do but watch videos of bands I don't like and write lame comments about how much I rock.

  • Adrian Belew!

  • bbbebebelellelelwlwlwlwlwlwllwlwlwl!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Is it just me or is the film quality on this super awesome? Looks like something shot last year.

  • Wow, anybody comparing Phish and the Heads, stfu. Seriously. Two totally different bands, with two TOTALLY different scenes. Phish is my favorite band to see, but I love the Heads as well. Their 98 cover of Remain in Light was a dedication to the band, sheeesh! Relax people and just listen to the damn music!

  • @PhunkyPhishPhan EXACTLY... Sick of know-it-alls talking shit. TH is better, no PHISH is better, just STFU people. IMO phish's version is better, cuz i think it sounds better slowed down a bit with mike's phunky bass thrown in. But that is simply MY OPINION, and im not gonna go around proclaiming it fact. And @tomcatfoxy, Simon Cowell cover band? Do u no anything about music or did u just see this video on your dad's favorites? Seriously... how old are you?

  • @UngratefulLiving420 THANK YOU!!! Both bands are amazing...

  • @UngratefulLiving420

Obviously my comment was lost on you. I like the contradiction in your comment too -keep working on the logic - you might get there one day.

  • Phish is some kind of Simon Cowell covers band, right? I can't believe people mention them in the same breath as Talking Heads.

  • I know what you mean. Phish's cover of this SUCKS ASS!

  • @tomcatfoxy

    no kidding!

I come on this video to watch Talking Heads

I read comments and these fucking fish punks hijack the thread into a discussion about fish

jesus..they do it on GD videos too!

    WTF

go watch fish and get the fuck out of here!

  • Tina rox that Bass either way.

  • why on earth would anyone live in a city

  • reason #1, attractive women, like the women in this clip, for example; reason #2, great concerts; reason #3, rednecks aren't the predominant life form, etc., etc.

That said, I'm sure you can come up with lots of great reasons why a person wouldn't want to live in a city, and I'd agree with many of those reasons.

  • @andrewlewis963 Why on Earth would anyone live in the country?

  • David Byrne will forever be a better singer than Trey Anastatio. It's a fact that Phish is heavily influenced by the Talking Heads. Isn't Stop Making Sense one of the best performances you've ever seen? Which band would I rather see play live (if I even had the choice)? Hard question.

  • yeah phish in 97 or 98 i would of prefered to see more than the heads but now en days nahhhhhhhhhhh people are just lying to themselves now'endays they sound mediocre at best AND yes phish is my fav band has been since 01 and i saw them in 99 and was at the hampton 09run.......but the 5-10 shows ive heard from 09 (knoxville,asheville,8,etc.....) or mediocre at best..........about cities OBVIOUSLY the heads version is better cauz not only is it original its creepy unlike the happy phish version

  • OK, so the crowd is stiff because they are all on coke. Phish Heads, please these are the guys the wrote this song. This is how it was supposed to be played. Treys vocals are fine and their version is fun and stoned, but Talking Heads forged this song the way it was supposed top be played.

  • yeah, the crowd sux...was it because there early stuff was more punk? i found that at sonic youth concerts all "expieremental" music shows have a crowd that stands around

  • @zaddack

yip...thats a really good observation my friend...talking heads for me from whnece'd i 1st listened to them (loved the motherfucking shit otta them from age 15 now 3 millioN [nah! 40] ), they still {sorry david Byrne}] are the best sonwriters up along side 'team techno; others; David...you are still the most inventive songwriter (4 me) in the 20th century, thank you!

  • pretty funky but i like phishs version better...cant compete with treys vocals

  • yeah phish really phunks it up like houses in motion i love phishs version

  • @liamsdad33

    go watch fish then!!

    PHUCK OPH !

  • whatever....

  • David Byrne can't compete with Trey's vocals? Wow!

  • What a band!!!

  • im a little freaked out :S

    keke good song

  • someone please post the album version...

  • ya dude that crowd sucks, they are all just standing there.

  • That was awesome but the crowd was meh.

  • oh my god theyre so weird but in such a good way

  • ohhh tina tina tina i love you marry me youll always get 2's on my sliff

  • Adrian Belew's guitar is as crazy as David Byrne. I Love it.

  • Look over there- dry ice factory:

Good place to get some thinking done.

Talking Heads was their own genre. Awesome cubed.

I smell home cooking... It's only the river!

  • David Byrne is so cool.

  • great stuff,just marvelous, 5 stars PEACE!

  • I could be wrong but is that Adrian Belew in the yellow shirt.

  • Yes, it is Adrian Belew.

  • Im going to see David Byrne in concert in a week. Bad Ass. Despite his mellower nature as of the past years, Im still so excited to the master at work!

  • How was it? Did he play some of his old stuff or did he play a lot of his new album because i'm not a big fan of his new album

  • I saw him a few days ago. He played about 2/3 old stuff 1/3 new stuff. The show was unbelievable amazing. He's still got it.

  • At 2:45 does David say "One Time For Ringo"?

If so why does he say that? Was Ringo having a drug problem in 1980 or was it meant for this song to rock out? He did not say it when there was any special drum part so let me know what you think. Actually a guitar part follows him saying that.

  • Nah,.. Its like the part in "Caddy shack" when Rodney Dangerfield called that bandleader "Ringo", or in Pulp Fiction When Sammy Jackson called that British guy in the diner "Ringo" only because he was British! Your reading WAY too much into this!

  • I see but he does in fact say "One Time For Ringo", correct?

  • Correct. I'm kidding around with you with the movie references. Ringo was pretty insignificant in America and music at that point in time, so my best guess is that it was an inter band cue/joke. Bands get kinda stupid around each other after awhile on the road!

  • This show was in 1980. Does anyone know the exact date?

I ask because on May 19, 1980 Ringo and Barbara Bach were involved in a car crash. While traveling through England Ringo and Barbara suffered a near-fatal car crash, miraculously surviving with few injuries. Ringo decided he never wanted to be separated from Bach again. They married less than a year later.

  • IF THEY WANT TO!!

Byrne's a beauty, an unheralded national treasure. Tina's a beauty in the literal sense, and a rock on the bass. Phish's version is so good.

  • just the best!!!

  • where is the best place to live? is it important i don't know am i safe? Tina is attractive and the bass line in this is one of my favourites.

  • Wow,tina looks gorgeous here, what a babe. And she plays the heck out of that bass also.

  • Yeah, I love the phish version too. Talking heads kick ass, so much ass. mrbean, that's funny, I bet David Byrne would be like "good."

  • lmao good stuff. i love the phish version

  • For some reason I could not help to laugh at this. Its good stuff. When I seen david byrne live his dancing just made me laugh.

  • I love David's style. He is one slick attractive man. ;)

  • brilliant!!!

  • Adrian Belew is King!

  • deep. very cool. thx Look over there!...A dry ice factory A good place to get some thinking done

    p

  • Looks like Adrian Belew, from King Crimson, stage left.

  • Adrian got started with Frank Zappa, David Bowie saw him and he worked with Bowie where David Byrne saw him and he started working with the Talking Heads where Robert Fripp saw him and asked him to join King Crimson

  • too bad. Coldplay is more your cup of tea huh?

  • David Byrne looks and sounds so amazing here <3!

  • One of favorite TH songs. Should have been included in the final cut of Stop Making Sense!

  • HOLY FUCK! these cats are funky. If you don't beleive me, ask John Frusciente!

  • What a band, what a sound, what a groove :)))

  • theres Tina!

  • These guys are WHACKOS!!!

    Awesome.

Phish brings the funk to this track

  • genio byrne
