the problem here is (if I understand it right) instability - atoms need to stay in one place during the computations - and any slightly disturbance will make nonsense. How about purposely shake them, with certain way, and by knowing that way - it can be seen as order. The difference is - now that random disturbance will affect it much less - because it will not be strong enough because of atom's inertia. (this work at least in our daily life - I dont know if it work on small scale.)
2020? He was born in 1947. That makes him 67 years old! By 2020, it's possible this man might be dead! WE MUST PERFECT IMMORTALITY BEFORE HE DIES!! Keep this amazing genius of a man alive! D:
For now, lets hope they find a way to build computers out of graphene. Doesn't look too promising, from what I've heard, but you never know. Would be sweet.
Nice information about quantum computing from Dr Kaku. But I don't share his fear of smart computers. Computers are becoming smarter and it will be a great event for our civilization when they take over humans as the main economic and scientific power. At that point our civilization will evolve to the next level.
I see no problem that our descendants are silicon (or quantum computing) based.
@HyperboricPhil Actually she's very good, you know why? Because she's not constantly interrupting and let's him get to his point. Why would you say she's bad at it?
We need computers that are smarter than humans. Us humans aren't getting the job done, so something has to. Just place security measures into the enhanced computers to ensure they follow human creator instructions. Measures that can be manually controlled as well as automated. Reason I say we need computers that are smarter than humans is because computers may be able to figure out science and even quantum theories that us humans just can't perceive.
@culliganbro1 Are you serious? They used to think that no one would ever need more than half a gig of disk space. What's big now is tiny a decade in the future.
@name887 chill man. im just saying that our computation abilities are gonna need to evolve long before our storage abilities. he said it himself. we got ten years left with silicon. thats gonna be like the ps4 lifecycle and then we are f to the ucked
@kroen Now that is just wrong i had a mouth full of beer and now its all over my computer screen. that is just down right hilarious i cannot stop laughing
There's a simple way around the limitations of silicon processors: use more fucking processors. We've been doing this for some time. Engineers and scientists figured out quite some time ago that there is not infinite space on a CPU and that eventually you run into problems with Heisenberg's principle and knowing where and what your components on a chipset are doing.
So we simply add another processor, and another, and another. And program software to utilize that. Bingo, more processing power.
@matchesburn even that wont last forever.. you would run out of room on the motherboard for processors..why go that route.. when you can just work towards developing quantum computers? im thinking making things better for the human race would be a good thing.. and we are going to need quantum computing to navigate space in any kind of vessel.
"you would run out of room on the motherboard for processors"
Then you can daisy chain multiple mobos/comps into an ad-hoc unit. It's not a problem.
"when you can just work towards developing quantum computers?"
Because it's not a mature technology. It sounds great and it can be if it matures, but as of now it's not a stable and accessible technology yet due to engineering and scientific limitations. And, likely, will require billions of dollars and decades to get to work.
@matchesburn woudnt there be a loss of power over a daisy chain? And how big do you really want to daisy chain multiple computers? We have about 10000 years before we freeze to death.. we cannot stay on earth forever.. at one point there will no longer be any natural resources. applying a monetary cost to research and space exploration is something we need to work past for the betterment of the human race.
Having processor power means nothing if you don't know how to use it. Simply having a computer capable of doing millions upon millions of teraflops worth of calculations will do NOTHING to solve quantum mechanics or string theory if we're putting in the wrong data.
As for freezing to death in 10K years, don't know where you got that. If anything, it's going to be getting hotter as the sun expands slightly. In 100,000 years you'll be sweating your ass off in Antartica.
Having processor power means nothing if you don't know how to use it. Simply having a computer capable of doing millions upon millions of teraflops worth of calculations will do NOTHING to solve quantum mechanics or string theory if we're putting in the wrong data.

so basically, we are almost at the peak of silicon computing but at the same time, when it comes to quantum computing, we are back to ancient computing technology(i.e. the abacus) and are going to have to start over.
with quantum computing will this mean quantum super computer servers? hence a new internet? perhaps a Quantum Network replacing this current Turning machine based Network?
It's not about how amazing the technology is its about the amazing things the technology will let us do. I am excited about the advancing technology but not only am I excited about seeing computers of such great capacity and speed but also what these computers could develop.

If I was talking to Dr. Michio Kaku or any other genius like Steven Hawking, I would be really nervous. I wouldn't know exactly what to say or respond to any of their questions since I would be too worry about saying something wrong or stupid. I think this woman did a good job talking to Dr. Michio Kaku. I'm sure most people would feel nervous trying not to sound dumb around him.
@THANATOS112220 You'd be wrong in assuming he is smarter than the average person. Intelligence is expandable and you can develop it, just like a muscle. Most humans have the ability to be genius in any number of topics, but choose not to. The brain is very complex, and you are under-estimating the ability of your own in your assumptions. I'd never assume anyone is smarter or not as smart as me, because intelligence is like an ice-berg. You only see a portion of the surface communicating.
@DogsBestFriend4Life I know that, but I'm talking about Dr. Michio Kaku being a genius at his own subject of science (physics), and not something else like music, sports, mathematics, etc. So when it comes to physics, Dr. Michio Kaku is smarter than the average person on that type of topic.
She's too short and yet god's greatest achievement in creation,,, did you believe that? God can't even make a simple freaking cup of coffee never mind the universe.
I heard it that way too and my ears had to take a double take. Very funny. Although I'm quite intelligent, I'm very sexual too. I admit, this interview was extremely sexy. I hear you but did you also hear what he was saying? They both said some pretty remarkable things. It wasn't all about sex...but a great deal of it was! haha.
As an alternative to Quantum Theory there is a new theory that describes and explains the mysteries of physical reality. While not disrespecting the value of Quantum Mechanics as a tool to explain the role of quanta in our universe. This theory states that there is also a classical explanation for the paradoxes such as EPR and the Wave-Particle Duality. The Theory is called the Theory of Super Relativity and is located at the: Super Relativity website
The interviewer is really dumb. She makes herself to be on Michio Kaku's level, but says stupid, incomprehensible things...she might as well be talking about mustard or frog legs, while Kaku goes along with it and reminds us that we're actually talking about quantum computing and the end of silicon...silly interviewer --- duuuuh!
what is the point of quantum computers.. what is the Real use for it. please explain. they say its going to revolutionize computers and the way we think about quantum science. but what is the use for it. sounds like a load of apple bullshit to me.. "its Revolutionary!"im sure it would solve huge problems but give me one real reason what we would use it for.
@903harman If a functional quantum computer exists, the biggest impact would be made in crytography. Quantum computers would be able to decrypt all the encrypted information that circulates in the internet. It can decrypt that bank account number and the messages you sent to other people that modern day computers can't. This can actually jeopardize everything that used to be secure. And thats only one of the many things quantum computers can be used. It actually is revolutionary.
50 yrs to make a quantum computer man were so fuckin stupid. but thats just his theroy anything is possable we could be making one right now as i mean the goverment milatary so we really dont know ur not a fuckin pyschic kaku u fuckin ashole! u dont know everything u dick head! wake the fuck up!
@lmonto Do you know just how hard it would be to build a quantum computer? 50 years is actually plausible. Actually now it would be 48 years. I'm not trying to start a flaming war or something, I'm just trying to point out the difficulty of making this.
Computing power doubles every 18 months? This is surely a fallacy. You can't get anywhere near a doubling in actually performance every 18 months. If computing power is doubling but it doesn't translate into performance that we can actually use, then the idea of exponential growth is trivial.
@wiijaek after a quick Wikipedia search, Kiki Sanford holds a B.S. in Conservation Biology and a Ph.D. in Molecular, Cellular and Integrative Physiology, and was formerly a research scientist in neurophysiology. In short: physics is probably not her forté, but she's more than likely to be smarter than your punkass. Think before you speak, inform yourself before you criticize others.
irsten "Kiki" Sanford (born August 1, 1974) was previously an American research scientist in neurophysiology at the University of California, Davis and is a specialist in learning and memory. She holds a B.S. in Conservation Biology and a Ph.D. in Molecular, Cellular and Integrative Physiology from U.C. Davis
@wiijaek Leave her alone she's just doing her job. You'd be nervous if you had to interview someone with such a great mind. I bet you're no genius either ;)
@wiijaek Really? I thought she was doing a fine job following along and interjecting. She seems to have some previous experience with a lot of these topics.
99.99% now where do i stand. i for one give an F..., but you know how that goes. ole' EE expression, it is what it is. ya know what you just posted is going to be "un-observed". :-) Please have a nice day. . . .
She's a neuroscientist, and hosts 2 science shows.. Who gives a fuck if she's a woman, she's a scientist, and much smarter then 99.99% of the people commenting.
@bighands69 Yes he is wrong, but he is also right. The moment they solve the current problems that plague quantum computers silicon will be obsolete. Why? Because quantum computers are so much more powerful than even todays fastest super computers
The first quantum computer was built! The system is comprised of a large shield room 3mx3mx2.5m with a cryogenics system which lowers the processor temperature and environment where the processor
is shielded form external signals and magnetism. The operating temperature is close to absolute zero (.002 Kelvin), where no energy exists allowing superconductivity. The processor uses quantum annealing. It is not capable of running common software nor does it run any well-known operating system.
@vclyel He meant that, the processors that are created with this type of material will reach a miniscule mass that will be the limit. Therefore, we will not be able to construct faster computers on silicon. That's where quantum computing comes in.
@mrrohitc She had a point. In space you're directly vulnerable to the sun's radioation. On earth you'd be protected because the earth has a magnet field protecting it but on march 11th there was an earthquake in Japan which caused a tsunami which caused some reactor cores to meltdown... Sucks for japan because I'd expect the best quantum computers to be made there.
@kimcheolho She is a good producer. Perhaps you are offended by her ability to communicate? There is something telling in your use of the word "impressive" in deriding her, no? What exactly did she say so wrong and ineffectively to warrant you calling her a "retard?"
I need a Quantum condom...

And thats only one of the many things quantum computers can be used. It actually is revolutionary.

Who cares if we get robots... The mass of humans today are already robots that need to learn there own body and mind.

50 yrs to make a quantum computer man were so fuckin stupid. but thats just his theroy anything is possable we could be making one right now as i mean the goverment milatary so we really dont know ur not a fuckin pyschic kaku u fuckin ashole! u dont know everything u dick head! wake the fuck up!
lmonto 7 months ago
@lmonto Do you know just how hard it would be to build a quantum computer? 50 years is actually plausible. Actually now it would be 48 years. I'm not trying to start a flaming war or something, I'm just trying to point out the difficulty of making this.
CallOFDutyMVP666 7 months ago
Computing power doubles every 18 months? This is surely a fallacy. You can't get anywhere near a doubling in actually performance every 18 months. If computing power is doubling but it doesn't translate into performance that we can actually use, then the idea of exponential growth is trivial.
delatroy 7 months ago
@delatroy You don't notice that they are getting faster because operating systems and software continue to get more bloated as speed increases.

@wiijaek She's Dr. Kiki Sanford. She holds a PhD in science.

@sc0rpi0n0 lol u think havin a phD is considered smart? there is a difference between smart and wise and being smart comes naturally.

She's a neuroscientist, and hosts 2 science shows.. Who gives a fuck if she's a woman, she's a scientist, and much smarter then 99.99% of the people commenting.

I would like to have her on my lab and then for dinner

I am very disappointed with this statement by KAKU.
Silicon will not be exhausted by 2020.
Moores law will not be applicable by 2020.
Parallel computation and 3d silicon structure will keep silicon growing for many years.
We are so far of the limits of computation that we at present cannot even imagine this limit.
It disapoints me to hear such great scientist making fundamental errors.
bighands69 7 months ago
@bighands69 Yes he is wrong, but he is also right. The moment they solve the current problems that plague quantum computers silicon will be obsolete. Why? Because quantum computers are so much more powerful than even todays fastest super computers
Baronstone 7 months ago
that's so cute how she's trying to say things...and Michio kaku is a real sport for just sitting there and letting her try to say stuff

@lvll138inrs Canada is actually very high up there in the globe when is comes to science.

It is not capable of running common software nor does it run any well-known operating system.

did he say silicon will be exhausted? we will all die without silicon. i don't think silicon will run out though. will it?
vclyel 8 months ago
@vclyel He meant that, the processors that are created with this type of material will reach a miniscule mass that will be the limit. Therefore, we will not be able to construct faster computers on silicon. That's where quantum computing comes in.

i guess the lady host was trying to put some self-invented bullshit there ...
where the hell in the world do the electromagnetic fields of the earth prevent the radiations incident or to be incident on earth....
she was tryin to do a kaku....but i guess she hould have better listened quitely
mrrohitc 8 months ago
