This guy works for Novation, when I owned automap he was explaining it, like he shows on this video.. a little biased maybe?? I had nothing but headaches using automap I returned it after like a month.. this is the newer one, but all I know is around a year ago automap sucked and I was using Logic on a Mac.
I have the Novation 61SLmkII. One problem: The vibrato stick wont return to zero. In other words there is no vibrato when I play regularly. Then when I push the stick up for some vibrato, when I let the stick back down, the vibrato remains. Really annoying! Anyone know how to fix this? I just downloaded automap 4 from their site this morning. It didn't help. I emailed them explaining this. Anyone had this problem? Resolved?
"Hang on, doesn't he work for Novation, well the answer is No" then he follows that with he "works for numerous other manufactures, INCLUDING Novation".. So the answer is YES dipshit not 'no'... marketing at it's finest lol..
is this what i need to add like a delay or effect to vocal or beat for example " im going down town and i want the effect to go town town town town ta ta ta ta ta town" what is the effect called can do that with this? im using cubase btw
This review was informative, he should have skipped all of that novation sales pitch talk. Very biased, how about mention the way automap allows you to switch presets? Its the stuff thats not talked about that is a pain with Novation.
Hi, Thanks for your gr8 tutorial. I was confused what controller to buy, but you have helped me lot. I just want to know something else. I work mostly on Cubase 5 with Reason, Live and Halion being running in Re-Wire mode. So which product best suits me, Nocturn 25 keyboard / Impulse 25 / Novation Nocturn / Remote SL mk2? I use loads of VST plug-ins, VSTinst. as well. I already have Triton workstation, so I mostly need a controller with many possible encoders and keyboard not much main. HELP
@mr4y Presonus Studio One is still a very young DAW. It is not considered an industry standard by a long shot yet. It shows promise, but its just not in Novations interest right now to support a program that has a relatively small user base still.
i just got an axiom pro after trying the novation... i like it 10x better, i happen to prefer the keyboard on the axiom pro by a lot (i play jazz and r&b), and i also vastly prefer hypercontrol to automap (i use ableton live + native instruments plug-ins)... just my $0.02
@xSparky117x The funny thing is that the axiom has full keys. Yet they still manage to make them feel like shit. While the Novation has the cut away keys, but they managed to make them feel quite nice and fairly well weighted.
Hmm, a shame he doesn't talk about the failings of automap,I own both an Axiom Pro & a Novation SL MKII, in short the novation has a better key action/keybed because it's made by Fatar, the Axiom has a crap keybed which sticks but Hypercontrol is plug&play where as Automap is a real pain to get working and is not intuitive at all.. So, Novation = better hardware. Axiom = better software.
@spector969 Ha, What you said is almost the exact opposite of how I feel. I despise HyperControl. But I love Automap. I can get automap to do what I want 10 times faster than hypercontrol. I have some students that have axioms with hypercontrol and some with different novations products that use automap and its almost always easier to teach my students how to use automap than it is hypercontrol. I'd be curious to hear why you don't find automap intuitive and hard to get working.
@MrDeemsMusic I think it's because my DAW of choice is Cubase, Automap has a problem with Cubase in that it doesn't automatically find "automap wrapped" VST instruments, meaning you have to start messing around in your VST folders, removing the original VST you want wrapped, then restart Cubase so automap finds the wrapped versions of the instruments then replace the original VSTs back where they were...but I'm simply not willing to do this just to get a midi controller working...
@MrDeemsMusic yeah, it was a disappointment for me as I bought the novation board to replace the shoddy hardware of the axiom, only to find the "map" was far from "auto" (in my case), I'm constantly surprised by the lack of a truly all-round great midi keyboard controller, I'm hoping Yamaha or someone will bring out something decent at NAMM in a few weeks..I doubt it, but there's always hope lol
I had a Radium 49 M-Audio controller few years ago, was a totally disaster! I sell it right away! Was lacking built quality, harsh edges, the sliders and the knobs where stuck in concrete, and they where imprecise! Also the driver had problems! Some time was not communicating with my DAW! Also, the Modulation controller had a problem and all the time the modulation was trembling! I had also a sound card from M-Audio, bad impression! Novation is definitively the way to go for home producers!

I'm in the market for a new controller (I only have a 25 key E-Mu Xboard at the moment, the 2 octaves are VERY limiting so i'd be looking at a 49 key)
I assume the 49 key SL is a bit less cramped also?
dunno why but the axiom looks cheap to me (probably coz it's white)

maybe my comment will be stupid, but can you use the novation as an instrument. Can you use it with reaktor( Razor, mikro prism, ....) for making loops, beats?
@Wazzovski It's a midi controller. That means when you press the keys, it sends midi information to your computer indicating which notes you pressed, how long you pressed them etc. The knobs, dials, pads and buttons can be configured to control whatever you want (ex: set one knob to control the rate of the LFO on your synth). I'm not sure what exactly you want to know. It does, like any midi controller, need software (such as logic) to accompany it.
i just bought the axiom pro 49 and i'm returning it and getting a novation 49 sl mk2. M audio deceived me, the hypercontrol only maps the native plugins and instruments of the softwares, the 3rd party plugins u have to map yourself. I feel so stupid, why didn't i see this video before?
I think that because the keys are better on the SL, it's the way to go, not to mention them controls. But if I had an Axiom Pro, I would be getting up on the Zero, cause them controls are so useful. I have been using a workstation, with just a pitch control, and when using the SL at the store, I just about died!
I swear I died at 05:57, he's like "support-wise novation has videos by this lovely man here (guy has hair) and some protool mapping movies with some bold guy. M-audio has a couple of movies by an even bolder guy but he will still help you to learn the main features" hhahhahaaaha *dead*
@Pierceher Very funny! I guess they figured no one would notice. Just like the sticky keys and keys that put out full velocity no matter how softly I played them on the older Axiom 61. "Ah, no one will notice!"
@Pierceher It's AMAZING! You'd think someone at Axiom would make sure the thing was PERFECT before sending it out to appear........ ON A YOUTUBE VIDEO! Where those of us considering a purchase will surely be doing some research. I know which company I'M buying from.
Also note that: Logic 9.0.1 and later allows full control of Logic's native FX and instrument plugins through Automap with no setup required." - So now you can take full control of your Logic Session.
Using LP9 and Having used both Novatations Auto Map on the Remote Zero (vs 1) and having just purchased an Axiom Pro 61 - I can say that mapping on AutoMap is WAY better. Axiom has pre assigned mappings and in all honestly, they are RUBBISH in logic. Filter Cuttoff being on page 9 in one plugin with resonance on another page. Thinking about taking it back and getting Novation 61SL. Anyhow, buyer be ware. Great keyboard otherwise although more knobs is nicer on the Novation. Happy Music Making!
can I use this slmkII to control dj software? well i know i can but how do I map it? i'm using VDJ 7 and Avid torq 1.5/2.0 Im not sure how to map and save different page for fxs, transport and mixer... how to map the touchpad so it works like m-audio xponent's pad... please help!!!!!
well I dont know much about the novation but I do know about the auxiom pro. First i would like to say its not just plug and go hyperlink is bull shit. Im very computer literate and once i installed the drive that came with mine it did not work. I downloaded a newer driver and it still did not work so I had to look deep with in each folder. hours later I figured it out some folders were not in place they should have been with in the drivers once i was done they still never worked properly.
Although Presonus Studio One is out there, and I think it's a great sequencer, Cubase and/or Pro Tools still have the biggest slice of the market and I kinda doubt it's going to change ever or at least anytime soon. When it comes to major sequencers, they all pretty much do things the same way, with some differences, but I think it is really a matter of subjectivity as we all come to "love" the DAW we work with. ;-)
@flotopo agree. Im on my honeymoon with my hot new Presonus StudioOne girl watching all the guys settling down for their old fat cubase/protools chicks XD
I understand u completely, it's just that my new Cubase 6 honey-bony will arrive soon and knowing she comes with improved looks and also a lot of new, practical and technical ways to give me "satisfaction", I can only see how my relationship with her will only go deeper in meaningful and fulfilling ways, as you probably know that nothing brings more satisfaction than a proven "love relationship" that has stood the test of time while rejecting short lived unsatisfying temptations, XD
"A1" Key on AxiomPro is defected...Then I saw too many bad comments about those sticky keys...That's why I'm gonna buy a 49SL MKII, for the same price.
Im anoob and want to know - Since these keyboards dont have memory motorized/ faders/pots, how do these features 'keep up' when returning to various plugins in a session???????
I recently spoke to Focusrite/Novation. They say you have to re-adjust levels yourself. Avoid the behringer flying faders controller; its trash! Save up for a tascam 3200! :)
@JUSTLOUNGINSOUNDS Either the software or hardware for MIDI faders will usually provide your choice of modes: "Jump", "Scale-in" or "Match" (other terms are often used). The first one would cause the software setting to "jump" to the value of the controller (which is bad for things like volume automation). The second one compares the value of the software control and hardware control and scales the values until they match. The third won't move your MIDI control until the HW and SW match.
I got the 61 SL mkII, I'm sure glad I picked it over the Axiom, though I like the keys on the latter better. I've had no problems with Automap using with Sonar. I also thought the long and thin LCD screen much more functional than a little block. Touch sensitive buttons aren't ideal, but are good enough.
The sticky key defect is common on the M Audio keyboards - I had to send my Axiom Pro back. I personally won't risk buying another M Audio product again.
@Architectonic01 im with u man. i bought the axiom pro 61 and the F and B keys stopped working. AND Avid support is TERRIBLE! ... plus i had sticky keys too.
well for one, sticky keys that suck. The keys stick when you press on them. #2 after 8 month i had to take this controller for repair, it cost me $115. it had a problem when I'd press down on the keys, it would get a distorted sound. i will put this video soon on the web. M-AUDIO products suck balls! They are made in China. Go figure. Stay away from this controller.

Support for the Axiom Pro on Windows 7 is non-existent (No drivers) and HyperControl is poor with Ableton Live. I'm selling my Axiom Pro and seeing if the SL MK II will improve my work flow. The Axiom Pro certainly did not, if anything, slowed it down from what it was before. By the look of this video AutoMap is far superior. HyperControl does not make things easy. I'm leaving M-AUDIO for good.
when he says it wont work with the internal controls in logic does he mean plug in devices like ultrabeat, sculpture, esx24, es2, es1..... and same with the plug in effects such as space designer and delay designer?
or does it mean the devices at the bottom of the plug in lists "audio units" for instruments and "au generators" for effects?
Yes, I have the Axiom Pro and I like it with Pro Tools but the keys are sticky. It's beyond acceptable. The keys don't stick on the $120 dollar Oxygen! What the hell is M Audio up to.
Novation has nice 'synth' style action keys which work well for most work, if I need a full action I can use my stage piano which I have connected. I would like to keep the Axiom Pro but I don't think the keys are getting any better with use. Also, the mod/Pitch bend wheels are slippery plastic. UGHHH
i´ve played expensive keyboards with fully-weighted keys. but having played on a steinway piano this still sux imo, due to the resistance which the keys on weighted keyboards do have.
the light keys on the axiom have a great piano-like feel to it. furthermore, the relatively light weight is much closer to my beloved own piano then anything else keyboardy out there.
so if you wanna have easy control, go buy the novation.
but if you want awesome feel and look, take the axiom- it´s cheaper btw!
@GrouEEf i have the axiom as of right now but im thinking about selling it for the sl mk2. I think the sl mk2 looks a lot more cooler in the dark than the axiom all it has is the led screen :/
man, the axiom is 100 bugs less, has awesome keys, has more space between the controllers which is essential, many buttons on the sl are unreachable and the controls on the axiom are less, but imo they have a better quality to them (though i gotta admit that i miss those shiny lil´ led rings).
everyone out there:
for 100 bugs less buy the axiom.
automap pwns hypercontrol, but this ain´t that essential cause in the end you´ll end up doing the synthing via mouse.
I still found this biased - The novation got mostly positive plugs and when it was a negative plug, he gave an excuse of why it was probably like that lol - if it's a shit part of the keyboard, leave it as a shit part , don't say, but they seem better than the older shit model that had no buttons lol - too funny..
Fantastic video; as more non-keyboard/midi types (like me) start buying these control surfaces to help them with their DAW-work, clear explanations like this will become invaluable!
He just said that it has full MIDI-mapping, Auto-Map, HYPER-DRAW, plus HUI and will work with all DAWS (which would include FL) - so the answer is 'yes'. But regardless, as long as you have any modern day (up-to-date) MIDI in/out - they will work fine with FL anyway. Plus, FL is very easy to control with just about ANY MIDI device or controller, as long as you know how to properly set it up within the program itself, and assign your properties.
the novation is nice dont get me wrong, but i own axiom 61 and i can do more then enough, and with every daw you can control diff zones and groups, so you have as many faders and knobs as instruments or vsts that you have in cubase or reason, ableton or protools. its all about learning the machine its all trial and error. read and search the meaning of the lingo they use. if you are asking to many questions then maybe this industry isnt for you.
@whiterabbitred yeah but he made a point to show strengths and shortcomings of both models. For example, he made it clear that to control internal instruments for Logic and Protools you're better off with the Axiom.
i used the old axiom 61 live with everything sampled through reason/ableton. It worked really, really well.
The reality is that the SL MK2 is over $400 more expensive for the larger 61 key model. It comes down to what you want to control and in what way.
In a live environment you dont need 20 nobs. id prefer the bigger drum pads/sample pads. Also, the ease of pro tools m powered makes the axiom a winner for me.
M-audio axiom (all of them) have a serious flaw with keys getting sticky. You can read all about it on their own forum with people complaining about it for over two years already!
@USRFobiwan : I totally agree with you. With Ableton, you have to disable HyperControl if you wanna use those trigger pads with Impulse. What's the point of that ?!? I returned mine after fighting with it for 8 hours straight and very pleased with my SL. The keys remind of the older Rolands.
I just bought an Axiom Pro 49. After a day of thinking I'd done something wrong, calling Sweetwater Tech Support, and finally M-Audio support, I was told that the hypercontrol drivers for Logic 9 have NOT (as of 1-9-10) been updated.
Although I can expect it to work seamlessly with Pro Tools (same manufacturer, who'd have guessed) this is frustrating because I already have a 49 key mid keyboard, that can't control anything else.
Just bought one of these, the SL 49 MkII, on eBay yesterday for $375. I owned an Axiom Pro 49 for about three hours before returning it to Guitar Center. Nice keyboard, but no Windows 7 drivers and the drum pads don't work out-of-box with Ableton Live 8.1. Hoping the Novation Automap works better than Hypercontrol.
I have the Nocturn controller with automap and its fuckin sweet. Total control over anything!
I cant wait to get the SL49 MKII. M-audio is trying to compete but will fail!
I can only see me getting the Axiom over the MKIIfor the price difference, how ever much the axiom costs. Still Hypercontrol will have lots of issues since its new and I would rather save for the SL MKII.
"The latest update to Logic Pro, v9.0.1, has been enhanced to include full Automap integration. This full integration means that instrument settings and plug-in parameters inside Logic can now all be accessed from all Automap-enabled controllers, such as the brand new Nocturn Keyboard, an SL MkII MIDI controller, or an Apple iPhone or iPod touch running the Automap app."
This video could do with one of those floating YouTube text annotations, since the only Novation downside (no control of internal Logic plugins) has been corrected by Apple. See my other message for full details.
All the buttons and integration of the SL MKII with a lot of softwares is just amazing, and the Automap Pro (v3) makes this controller as an extention of the software the you're controling!
I really want a SL MKII... I need to buy this thing to control Ableton Live
Man, I need to figure out automap3, I have a novation zero SL and it doesn't look like this video lol. I may just need to sell mine and go with a remote sl zero mk2
Nice comparison here. Axiom essentially beefed up the 49 with software and hardware friendly upgrades--especially with PT (YES!!)..sliders/pads and the like are all carryover... the white's cool..
Wich is THE best or Logic ? Thanks

@chemicalBR0 no, we get asked that a lot - its from a sample CD that was used by them too - I was surprised to discover.

Happy Music Making!

well I dont know much about the novation but I do know about the auxiom pro. First i would like to say its not just plug and go hyperlink is bull shit. Im very computer literate and once i installed the drive that came with mine it did not work. I downloaded a newer driver and it still did not work so I had to look deep with in each folder. hours later I figured it out some folders were not in place they should have been with in the drivers once i was done they still never worked properly.

who cares about all the ProTools or Cubase details when something like Presonus Studio One exists now <3
Zenboy23 1 year ago
@Zenboy23 ,
Although Presonus Studio One is out there, and I think it's a great sequencer, Cubase and/or Pro Tools still have the biggest slice of the market and I kinda doubt it's going to change ever or at least anytime soon.

@JUSTLOUNGINSOUNDS I'm also a noob/very curious about this. Someone please reply!
blahblahblahx2 1 year ago

All of logics internal plugins now work with the mk2. You just have to upgrade to logic 9.0.1

well for one, sticky keys that suck. The keys stick when you press on them. #2 after 8 month i had to take this controller for repair, it cost me $115. it had a problem when I'd press down on the keys, it would get a distorted sound. i will put this video soon on the web.
Raener 1 year ago
when he says it wont work with the internal controls in logic does he mean plug in devices like ultrabeat, sculpture, esx24, es2, es1..... and same with the plug in effects such as space designer and delay designer?
or does it mean the devices at the bottom of the plug in lists "audio units" for instruments and "au generators" for effects?
harristablist 1 year ago
Yes, I have the Axiom Pro and I like it with Pro Tools but the keys are sticky. It's beyond acceptable. The keys don't stick on the $120 dollar Oxygen! What the hell is M Audio up to.
Novation has nice 'synth' style action keys which work well for most work, if I need a full action I can use my stage piano which I have connected. I would like to keep the Axiom Pro but I don't think the keys are getting any better with use. Also, the mod/Pitch bend wheels are slippery plastic. UGHHH

kellyibiza 1 year ago
Both Seem Really Good ...
the Axiom Pro Looks Better and might Feel Better
But im Leaning Towards the SL because it does have a Few More Buttons and an x-y controller plus a joystick that can move freely or bounce back .
and Hyper Control vs auto map ...
hmmm both good but auto map even has an iphone app
ThaJSpraya 1 year ago
If you use Ableton, avoid Axiom at all cost. Simply research, research, research.
TangoTunes 1 year ago
i´ve played expensive keyboards with fully-weighted keys. but having played on a steinway piano this still sux imo, due to the resistance which the keys on weighted keyboards do have.
the light keys on the axiom have a great piano-like feel to it. furthermore, the relatively light weight is much closer to my beloved own piano then anything else keyboardy out there.
so if you wanna have easy control, go buy the novation.
but if you want awesome feel and look, take the axiom- it´s cheaper btw!
GrouEEf 1 year ago
this vid makes the sl appear way much better, and indeed- automap ownz hypercontrol easily.
however, having bought both the sl and axiom i still like the axiom best.
why? well, firstly: better quality, nice weight, awesome look in the dark imo, nice feel to the buttons.
and after all:
being a pianist the keyboard causes me an orgasm compared to anything else.
GrouEEf 1 year ago
@GrouEEf i have the axiom as of right now but im thinking about selling it for the sl mk2. I think the sl mk2 looks a lot more cooler in the dark than the axiom all it has is the led screen :/
walkingtrash 1 year ago
@walkingtrash
@walkingtrash
man, the axiom is 100 bugs less, has awesome keys, has more space between the controllers which is essential, many buttons on the sl are unreachable and the controls on the axiom are less, but imo they have a better quality to them (though i gotta admit that i miss those shiny lil´ led rings).
everyone out there:
for 100 bugs less buy the axiom.
automap pwns hypercontrol, but this ain´t that essential cause in the end you´ll end up doing the synthing via mouse.
GrouEEf 1 year ago
I still found this biased - The novation got mostly positive plugs and when it was a negative plug, he gave an excuse of why it was probably like that lol - if it's a shit part of the keyboard, leave it as a shit part , don't say, but they seem better than the older shit model that had no buttons lol - too funny..

Fantastic video; as more non-keyboard/midi types (like me) start buying these control surfaces to help them with their DAW-work, clear explanations like this will become invaluable!

pinksue 1 year ago
He just said that it has full MIDI-mapping, Auto-Map, HYPER-DRAW, plus HUI and will work with all DAWS (which would include FL) - so the answer is 'yes'. But regardless, as long as you have any modern day (up-to-date) MIDI in/out - they will work fine with FL anyway. Plus, FL is very easy to control with just about ANY MIDI device or controller, as long as you know how to properly set it up within the program itself, and assign your properties.

Thanks mate, very useful. Is there a big difference between the pro and the normal axiom?

Do anyone know how the novation SL mk2 works for FL Studio? Please respond!
verack22 2 years ago
the novation is nice dont get me wrong, but i own axiom 61 and i can do more then enough, and with every daw you can control diff zones and groups, so you have as many faders and knobs as instruments or vsts that you have in cubase or reason, ableton or protools. its all about learning the machine its all trial and error. read and search the meaning of the lingo they use. if you are asking to many questions then maybe this industry isnt for you.

@whiterabbitred yeah but he made a point to show strengths and shortcomings of both models. For example, he made it clear that to control internal instruments for Logic and Protools you're better off with the Axiom.

Pierceher 1 year ago
i used the old axiom 61 live with everything sampled through reason/ableton. It worked really, really well.
The reality is that the SL MK2 is over $400 more expensive for the larger 61 key model. It comes down to what you want to control and in what way.
In a live environment you dont need 20 nobs. id prefer the bigger drum pads/sample pads. Also, the ease of pro tools m powered makes the axiom a winner for me.
whiterabbitred 2 years ago
M-audio axiom (all of them) have a serious flaw with keys getting sticky. You can read all about it on their own forum with people complaining about it for over two years already!
USRFobiwan 2 years ago 5

I'm glad I chose Sweetwater. (No hassle returns)

Awesome review!
I ordered an axiom pro 61. I like the feel of the axiom's pro keys (...altough I've never tried the SL).
I hadn't seen this review before placing my order. What convinced me is that SFLogic Ninja is using one. This guy rules, so it's a no-risk choice.
Besides that, automap looks great with its software controls!
I'm using Logic 9, so there's no drivers problems.
have fun:)

Novation all the way!

Novation Automap is so much better than Axiom.
