I'm sorry, DrPhucker, in economics I'm pretty pro-market. I'm just happy that finally a developped country like USA can have a healthcare system as develloped as the country. Unfortunately, now that system it's worse than the portuguese one (the one I have in my country, even though we have a GDP 3 times lower than the USA). Being capitalist or conservative is not an excuse to have a bad heathcare system. Healthcare is as essential as education, security and justice.

- infant death rate: PT - 4,1/1000 ; USA 7,0/1000;

- life expectancy: PT - 77,3 yrs; USA 77,2 yrs;

- health expenses in USD for the same purchase power: PT - 1.797; USA - 5.635;

Also in PT there is: universal coverage, co-existence of public and private health insurance, reduction of costs by investing in prevention (rather than in treating), public campaigns for healthy habits and regular check ups. If you find more data please post it.

The problem isn't comparing the standard of health care in portugal and the US, it's the ability to give chances to to poor and helpless a right to be treated and get insurance cover. We do it all the time in Canada and we still enjoy life std that are high in the world

You get what you pay for. If you want more you work longer hours and pay for it. Our hospitals are already required by law to treat emergency patients and we have charity hospitals where you don't pay anything all over the country.

Canada's health care is crap for everything other then basic care. If I need a specialist i have to wait in a long waiting line that can take years.
