I have never forgotten him. I also have his huge book of American folk songs and the stories behind them. He brought folk music back, as far as I am concerned.
The best rendition of this song that I know of. Thanks for posting. I first heard this version in my early twenties, and in my early seventies, I still sing it. Thanks for posting.
I really do not know, firegal. I have never heard a Judy Collins recording of it. Just Ronnie, which was in the 50's and Richard Dyer-Bennet, at about the same time. Wish I could answer your question. Maybe someone else could? C.
Better than Emmy Lou Harris, si? Only problem is, out here in California, now...Spanish is a mandatory tongue. Arghhh...que es mal. Cinco estrellas por este cancion bueno. Senor John
Merci beaucoup, John. That is about how good my Spanish is, though it is fairly common here, though not mandatory. Not so hard to understand, I just keep turning it into Italian. Bene C.
I wish Ronnie would have recorded more songs as a soloist. In my opinion she sang as well as Dinah Shore and Peggy Lee.

so nice to hear a musical woman sing. You always 'get' it.

I 'was such a fan of Ronnie Gilbert, but I haven't heard her in years. Jack Warshaw below says it perfectly. What a beautiful, pure voice.

Ronnie is the greatest. So simple, yet so elegant, no smaltz. A treasure

I'm very sorry, but no, I don't have it, as far as I remember, but I really wish I did. I haven't heard it in ages. Thanks for reminding me.

I first heard it in a recording by John Jacob Niles, a very original and uncommercial sort of singer who sings to have been completely forgotten.

Did Judy Collins do this one? I can remember hearing a female recording artist sing it back in the 70's but don't remember who it was.

Yes, Judy Collins recorded this song on her album "Bread and Roses" in the 1970's.
