  • I use to see some of Betty boop shows when I 6 I think but I still like her now I remember her name so I could see all the shows agin! XD

  • For Helen Kane it couldn't have been pleasant seeing her unique vocal tones and facial movements turned into animation. And she received no copyright recognition or payments for all the originality the Fleischer animators took... That's showbiz?

  • "Stay away from bootleg hooch, when you're on a spree..." So Prohibition Era! :-)

  • Button up your over coat When the wind is free Take good Care of yourself You belong to me Eat an apple everyday Get to bed by three Take Good Care of yourself You belong to me Be careful... • omg wow we're singing this song for our school's winter chorus concert

  • Although Betty Boop was based off of Helen Kane, that doesn't make Helen Kane any less of an awesome singer, nor does it make Betty Boop any less of a cute character. <3 Though, it is a shame...

  • Betty Boop was always voiced by Mae Questel, not Kane.

  • Paulj0557 you are so right. There is only one Betty Boop and she is Helen Kane.

  • I like to look at it like Helen Kane is the o-r-i-g-i-n-a-l cutie pie.

& Betty Boop is just a concoction of all the fakes.

  • Thank you for posting this....It was fun.

  • lovely!!!

  • Fantastic! Thanks for this posting.

  • :40 slut

  • @maldub88 It's Betty Boop. She was supposed to be a sex symbol. Some people, I swear. So judgemental.

  • @kakashidemon321 omg lame

  • @maldub88 I don't understand what's so lame. If you think she's a slut, then go be a bitch somewhere else so you don't need to look at her.

  • @kakashidemon321 will do.

  • im trying out for a lipsing part for this song todayyyy!

  • I didn't like the splice of Betty Boop for obvious reasons; but I do like all the photos of Helen Kane--the REAL LIFE Betty Boop. Hell, the comic strip even stole Helen's title "The Boop-Oop-a-Doop Girl"!

  • @ThomasASwilling

One thing about Helen, She disliked being called Betty Boop. The creation of the animated character Betty Boop brought loads of controversy. Helen's title was originally the Boop oop a doop girl but has been changed to the Boop Boop a Doop Girl instead. also originally Helens original Scat Lyric was Poop Oop a Doop, but people often mistaked her saying Boop Boop a Doop. to tell you the truth she's lucky becuse she would have been called the Poop Oop a Doop girl.

  • @margiehines I don't doubt that Helen disliked being called Betty Boop, considering the circumstances. You're right, too, that her actual scat lyric was "Poop Oop a Doop". That becomes clear in the movie "Pointed Heels", when her "hubby" character is trying to light a cigarette and she keeps blowing out his matches with that line. The "B" sound wouldn't generate enough air flow to blow out a match, but the "P" sound would. Also, "Poop" didn't have the same meaning then that it does now.

  • Yeah but who would know Helen Kane today if it wasn't for Betty Boop. She would've have been forgottened in history.

  • @ziggycat999 Well, Helen claimed that Betty Boop, being a caricature of her, actually hurt her career; and I agree. Even if Fleischer had not modeled Betty Boop after Helen Kane, another cartoonist would have created a character modeled after her and would have given her Helen's voice and singing style. It was inevitable. For example, Foghorn Leghorn was modeled after a movie character "Beauregard Clanghorn" from the film "It's a Joke, Son!" All the greats have been remembered 1 way or another..

  • love the song & Betty Boop!

  • So excellent.

  • helen kane's face reminds me so much of a girl at my school

  • Helen Kane has eyes like headlights

  • Betty Boop is 100% Helen Kane. She was, literally, robbed.

  • @beowulven

Betty's first apperance's are Helen kane like. its mostly the curls and the singing style which comes from Helen kane. which resulted in Helen being easily impersonated by many. Bettys slimmer apperance comes more from Clara bow or mae west.... as you should know Helen kane didnt go around in short dresses, Helen only added naughty bits into her records that she sold.

  • @margiehines That would be Clara Bow, since the cartoonist who created Betty Boop first modeled her after Clara Bow, then later he modeled the face--and voice--after Helen Kane.

  • @ThomasASwilling Oh, and it was Mae Questel who actually did the voice of Betty Boop, including the Helen Kane singing style. Mae Questel was a talent in her own right, though. She also did the voice of Olive Oyl in the Popeye cartoons.

  • @ThomasASwilling

Yeah Mae Questel was the Best loved voice, Dont forget Ann Rothschild, Margie Hines, Bonnie Poe & Kate Wright.

  • @ThomasASwilling

Grim Natwick used a photograph of Helen Kane when he designed Betty Boop. Betty was originally meant as a Caricature of Kane, See Dizzy Dishes the first Cartoon to see a big french poodle. yeah your right Betty Boop is a Combination of both Helen Kane & Clara Bow.

  • @beowulven

Oh and btw Helen allowed the use of impersonation when she held her contests. around 1929 in certain movies you can see a Helen Kane impersonation. mostly by Majorie babe kane or ginger rogers. Mae questel won first place in the Helen kane contest and was signed by paramount. Kate Wright & Little ann little also entered.

  • I love this song BUT.....Betty Boop Cartoons Scare Me.....i love the music in the cartoos but those cartoons scare me :o)

  • Helen Kane was the inspiration for the voice and face. Body was Mae West and the real voice was Mae Questal [old aunt on Christmas Vacation]

  • @slm21ea9

The voice of Betty Boop was provided by Margie Hines, Kate Wright, Little Ann Little, & Bonnie Poe. Mae Questel was the most populer out of all the vocals for the animated character Betty Boop, meaning she got great credit, even though she stopped voicing Betty from 1938. most likley becuse she voiced Betty in who framed roger rabbit.

  • haha When I was in elementary school I sang the chorus of this song in the middle of an old time medley... I've loved it ever since! Thanks for the post!

  • Eve Golden, author of "Platinum Girl: The Life and Legend of Jean Harlow" is writing a book about Helen Kane!

  • Nobodies voice is this beautiful anymore.

    <3

  • She was ripped off ... DEFINITELY the inspiration for BB

  • Does anyone know where I can find sheet music for this song????

  • ebay would be your best bet!

  • @chibiviolinist21 At Sheet Music Direct. (Google it! It won't allow me to put the link in this box.) And you can specify the key!

  • Very well made! Thanks for posting!

  • Adorable!!

  • Poor - Berry lol - She was sooo popular and use a lot of Top NO. 1 hits in her cartoons..........Lover Her!

  • Just so people don't get the wrong idea, Helen Kane was NEVER the voice of Betty Boop. In fact, she sued the Fleischer cartoon studio for ripping off her character. She didn't win though.

  • This song was first released on Wednesday January 30, 1929. By the time the record hit shelves, Helen had reached the peak of her popularity. I've read that during that time, dolls made in Helen's likeness were flying off the shelves and contests which were held to see which flapper girl could best imitate Helen were held all over the country.

  • well....and the background music too.....unbeatable to me.......

  • Helen's version of this song is actually the most famous version of said song.

  • Nice montage, but I wish you had left out the animation. Now don't get me wrong, I love Betty Boop cartoons, but mixing Boop and Kane is a bit disrespectful. Betty Boop more or less ruined Kane's career. Wow, I'm such a dork! LOL.

  • Another job killed by the endless march of technology.

  • Great job. Really enjoyed this.

  • omg i love betty boop cartoons! and im only 13 years old

  • ME TOO!! my friends make fun of me cuz I listen to this kind of music all the time. But THIS is real music.

  • @Tacoflavoredkiss1 Yeah, my friends think I'm weird!

I bought this cute hat that looked ike it was from the 20's and she's like, "What are you wearing that for?!"

I couldn't believe she said that. I wish people could be more like us!

  • I know!! ugh, man ppl r dumb, this stuff is so much cuter than the clothes now a days.

  • i know just how you feel. i'm right there with you.

  • @Wildflower173 Those 20's type hats you refer to are called "cloche hats."

  • Wow, Helen Kane was so pretty. Very wholesome and sweet. I love this woman.

  • I love this song!! <3

  • Very sweet. Thanks.

  • a combination of Helen Kane, the famous popular singer of the 1920s and contract player at Paramount Pictures (the studio that distributed Fleischer's cartoons), and Clara Bow, who was a popular actress in the 1920s who had not managed to survive the transition to sound because of her strong Brooklyn accent which nevertheless became a trademark for Betty.

  • Before Clara Bow Betty Boop Was Fully Modeld On Helen Kane

But Betty Boop Went Though alot of transformations And her new Transformation Was a Combination of Clara Bow, But her Old Ones from dizzy dishes,Barniclebill, Was All Styled On Helen Kane, The Curls and Baby tone Are and Will always still be helen kanes Style, Even if helen kane Heard the word boop boop a doop from baby esther

  • Wonderful. Thank you.

  • The voice of Betty Boop was that of Mae Questel - not Helen Kane.

The voice on this recording IS that of Helen Kane

  • Mae Questel based her voicing of the Betty Boop character on the work of Helen Kane. Helen did a boop boop a doop version of 'I Wanna Be Loved By You' which would later be covered by Mae in a Betty episode. You simply can't deny that the look and sound of the two women is nearly identical.

  • I love the way Helen does her Betty Boop - the real deal as we know. This old classic has been done by many artists and I can just imagine dancers back in the day doing The Charleston to t his one. You have done a great job putting this video together. I love all the pictures. Thank you for posting. - Paula

  • Don't really like the splicing, since Helen Kane did sue over Betty Boop.

  • @violetriot and considering that Helen Kane never actually did the voice for Betty Boop--just a lot of imitators mimicking (pronounced "STEALING") Helen's style and voice. It's plain for anyone with half a brain to see that Betty Boop is a straight-up copy of Helen Kane in every way.

  • @ThomasASwilling

Im sorry but Helen allowed the use of impersonation. She was impersonated by many others in songs & movies around 1929-1930 By stars such as Annette Hanshaw & Marjorie Babe Kane ( No Relation) and Ginger Rogers ( one off).

  • The video was done well and I love the song, but don't ever forget that Helen created the look and sound, and Fleischer Studios copied the whole package into Betty Boop. Thanks to Betty, Helen gets just about NO recognition for her unique talent :-(

  • Ahhhh....Helen Kane as Betty Boop! This brings back great memories of Friday evenings at student dances in the Gym my JHS. Someone on the faculty had come up with the idea of showing old Castle Film versions of the Fleischer Studios Boop cartoons as a bridge between the recorded dance selections. I've always wondered since if the purpose of showing these during a dance program was to tune up, or to tune down, rhe hormones of the student dancers in attendance.

  • this is great...thank you!

  • love this

hey it is so cold in New York at the mo that Flashers are passing out polaroids....

  • aaahh these lyrics are great, who wrote this?

  • Words and music by DeSylva, Brown, and Henderson, Recorded by Ruth Etting on March 11, 1929 in New York City for Columbia Records.

Originally issued on Columbia 1762 D (Matrix 148029) The record, with Mean to Me on the flip side sold over a million copies.

  • Helen was so beautiful: so seductive! Her rendition of this song is just magical!

Your presentation is great! This one is going straight to my favourites.

    Thank you for sharing.

  • This is wonderful! Thank you.

  • 1901elina - shes from new york lol, most singers from new york them days had these squeeky voices.

  • how did she get her voice like that?

i seriously thought it was a three year old lol

  • beautiful, just beautiful, Thanks!

  • dosent betty look alot different at 1:04 ??

  • she does!!! she looks really scary XS

  • I Love how Betty's eyes move at 0:13

  • Very nice video! Entertaining visuals.

  • stay away from bootleg hooch when ur on the street...

  • ...when ur on a spree. =)

  • Helen Kane was totally adorable! And my namesake.

  • Aaah, really cute!

  • it's a shame how helen kane sued the creators of betty boop for being and copying helen and got nothing :/ helen is too cute!

  • @AriesG247 It's not copying if every other girl from the Bronx talked that way in the 20's, think of it as a Proto (Jeniffer lopez Bronx Girl Speak) lol

  • @AriesG247 You do realize of course, that back before the 50's most stars were taken advantage of terribly by the companies they worked for. It is too bad Helen kane filed a lawsuit.....But being treated like someone's property.....Was no bed of roses either.

  • One of Annette Hanshaws great recordings was of Happy Days Are here Again. There is a DJ named Rick Conaty who plays all these songs from the 20"s and 30's on Sunday night at 8 on FM radio that come from Hofstra Univerity in Long Island. The station is in the lower 80.s.

  • Helen Kane's recording of this song is precious. I can't imagine anyone doing it any better. Besides, Betty Boop cartoons are my favorites!

  • there is one person who does it better :),beardyman does it better check out : Beardyman @ UK bboy championships 2006

  • ^seconded^

    Beardyman is amazing XD

  • amazing song. Thanks for making the video, I had no idea how beautiful she was!

  • She was the first and the original lady to sing the classic song "I wanna be loved by you."

  • lol whats eww about? is it her voice? or people acting like shes a baby lmao

  • This is so adorable. Gosh I want this song!!!! I love Betty Boop, I love this slideshow, great pics and clips. :)

  • Ahhh... Love this, Michelle! I did think the Boop was Clara Bow. No I know better ;O) Best to ya!

  • I enjoyed very much this video. Helen Kane's voice is precious. The song "button up your overcoat" reveals what true relationships are all about: looking out for the one you love. Great song.

  • I have always liked the character Betty Boop and never knew the real Betty Boop was Helen Kane. I really like your video. Thank you for sharing it!!!

  • Hooray for Betty Boop!!! Hooray to Helen Kane for giving us all Betty Boop!!! And a BIG THANK YOU to frantzdream for the making of this video for our enjoyment!!!

  • "make shure you wear your flannel underwear when you climb a tree."

  • thanx 4 sharing!

  • maravillosa betty boops

    i love you

  • you did a great job . wonderful . thanks

  • One of my favorite of her songs, "Beware of peroxide blondes!" Still true to this day.

  • it s true.i think today is more true than ever!!

  • Boop-boop-a-doop!

  • Wah!

  • Fantastic...thanks for this.

  • Speaking of Annette Hanshaw , google for "Nina Paley" dotcom and check out Nina's animated film Sita Sings The Blues, which features songs by Annette Hanshaw .

  • Thank you so much!

What a cutie.and for ever! It is so sweet to hear her voice!

Thank you thank you thank you!

  • im glad she was made or my betty boop wouldnt exist :0

    and that would be weird

they proberly then would have made another cartoon sex sybol mabey

    of marilyn manroe...

  • Ha, I think Helen Kane's great, and I'm glad to see her remembered. Another great late 1920's flapper singer was Annette Hanshaw, who was, incidentally, Helen Kane's best friend. From time to time, Annette would imitate Helen's singing style in her own recordings. If you can locate these (and it's not too easy), they're a hoot to hear.

  • Hey Felix-What are the names of some of Annete's imitations? I can definitely locate them if I have the "name of that tune". Somerset45

  • Sensation Records released an Annette Hanshaw series in the late 1990's, I believe, and some of these Helen Kane imitations can be found in these compilations. I *think* Annette went by "Dot Dare" while recording them. I'll try to post more definite details in the next few days.

  • Well, I just found Annette's version of "Button Up Your Overcoat". I didn't look close at the performer thinking it was Helen Kane. Annette does a better Boop than Helen!!!!

  • well you should upload it then ...

  • Think I'll just buy the Annette Hanshaw CD from Amazon that has all these great songs. Wish Helen's CD was available again.

  • Ha, I think Helen Kane's great, and I'm glad to see she's not utterly forgotten. By the way, she was best friends with another late 1920's flapper singer, Annette Hanshaw, and, from time to time, Annette would record while imitating Helen! These recordings are kind of a hoot, if you can locate them.

  • I love Helen Kane! Thanks so much for putting this up!

  • Excellent work! Bravo! The voice of Betty Boop was done by Mae Questal, who was the best of the many Helen Kane imitators. The Fleischer brothers, who created Betty Boop, used Helen's voice and her image without asking her permission or compensating her. They even used Kane's trademark phrase "boop boop a doop." She sued them and unfortunately she lost. If it weren't for Helen Kane, there wouldn't have been a Betty Boop.

  • she would still be made but not with boop oop a doop

becuse she was made in earlier seires as a dog

called nan mgrew or nancy lee or lulu belle

lol she had 3 names until they called her betty boop

  • If you've seen Betty Boop as a dog she looks exactly the same as the later Betty Boop. The *only* difference is that she had floppy ears. There's absolutely no doubt whatsoever that she was based on Helen Kane. And Dangerous Nan McGrew was a Helen Kane song, so there's further proof. Betty Boop's voice was always provided by Helen Kane impersonator Mae Questal. If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck then it is a duck.

  • lol not alaways lmao

    before mae questal

    another woman voiced betty boop

who sounded simuler to mae questal

anyway they all copyed it from helen kane anyway

  • Mae Questal won a Helen Kane lookalike and soundalike contest. Betty Boop was based on Helen Kane. Mae and Helen sure do look very similar though.

  • great job did yall know that betty and helen kane was simuler they used helen to model on betty in dizzy dishes 1930 as a dog

  • Very cool! Good job!

  • Thanks! Loved it :)
