It's not been a great year for Oscar movies, but Avatar as best picture? I don't know, man. Story-wise, it's not anything knew, but technically it's up there. Whether or not the movie industry give it an Oscar to kind of show support for bringing in a $1 billion, is possible. They want 3D to become a big deal to try and counteract piracy, and the tickets make more money - even though it's not the revolution they claim it to be.
Agreed. But then again, Dances with Wolves, Braveheart and even Cameron's own Titanic weren't exactly the most original of stories and yet, they all won Oscars for Best Picture.
Dances with Wolves was quite original at the time, and for a pre-CGI time, it's very impressive techniquely. Braveheart was unrelenting in it's brilliant portrayal of war. Titanic, despite being kinda fluff, did some brave things, like kill Jack off at the end. Avatar takes no such risks, it plays it very safe. The effects are fantastic, but that's what the Special Effects Oscar is for. It ain't a best picture, or best director - but who knows!
Avatar will probably sweep all the technical awards and maybe even best score and best original song, but as for Best Picture or any of the other "big" ones, I dunno. The Oscars are notorious for snubbing science fiction films.
Avatar should win best effects and best director. Cameron Pioneered a lot of technological breakthroughs. But as for best picture? I dunno, i think Basterds mighta been a slightly better film - it had a better story anyway.
I'm in a minority...but may have an excuse...I'm older. I thought Basterds was crass. If you're brought on on violence in video games, etc...not just westerns and world war II movies, violent scenes like the ones in Basterds may just brush off your shoulders, but there was no real interaction in the basterds group...no good writing for them to work on. The writing in the bar was a setup to create tension...and there was a surprise at the end of the scene, but the tone of the film changed .......
I think Basterds was an incredible exercise in deconstructionism. Tarantino is basically the Americanized version of Jean Luc Godard, and he did a brilliant job at deconstructing the war genre, and having it blend into other genres, with great writing, performances, and writing.
If you don't mind people being carved up, murdered, strangled, all in the name of entertainment, then knock yourself out. And let's keep that camera way back for the burning scenes...don't want to let ourselves relate to what it's really like being burned alive...The real trick is not deconstruction of genre, it's the ability to say something about now...like the superb Gomorrah. I thought Soderberg's take on on post war Germany (The Good German) was a far better film.
But you have to know going into that movie that you aren't there for the storyline, you're there for the effects, and the world that James Cameron created for us to see.
i saw this film today and i loved it! i am somewhat of a fan of this genre, and am not that young, but i was enthralled. i am rooting for an ocar for him.
This film is amazing, really loved it. Agree that it should win for special effects, but doubtful that it would/should qualify for picture/director nod. But you never know, haven't they made it that 10 films will be nominated each year instead of the normal 5.
I thought it was WoW's movie coz i saw an advert at a glance and thought it was draenei and when they ride towards the giant tree I thought it was teldrasil, and the floating rocks where nagrand or somewhere in outland.
So was 2012. Must be hard to make a film like 2012, believing you have guaranteed oscars coming...then avatar comes out. Oscar voters do vote for films that invigorate the industry one way or another...I saw Avatar inImax 3D, and am going to see it in Real D in a smaller theatre....but not small, and the sound in a regular theatre beats right into your body...it comes off the walls...I peaked at a real D yesterday before buying tickets for this Wed., and was impressed with the sound and visuals.
