Siepi was of course a fabulous vocalist. The idea that he could only sing this well in a studio is preposterous. This is not a particularly difficult aria after all.
When I first heard him live I was in no doubt who was the star on stage. His voice was huge, rich and easy.
I'm glad he skips the cabaletta that Marini added from Oberto.
For Sure It's live He makes a mistake in the words "questo giglio immacolato" instead "si bel giglio immacolato " ...great record anyway..ciao valerio
Of course, this is live. There is another live Ernani from the Met with him: the one with Corelli,Price,Sereni from 1965, that is excelent too. The audience went crazy after Siepi's aria in that.
Poor Holovanov is probably not used to hearing live singing of this magnificence, that is why he thinks it isn't live. Yes, Holovanov, there used to be great singers who didn't have to record one phrase at a time. Also, can you not hear the audience noise in the background and the poor recorded sound? What about the Bravi, and the applause? Idiot!
Your posts to You tube are appreciated- thank you for sharing these great performances with us. Please do not feel that you have to answer everyone's comments. Sometimes, no answer is an answer.
please excuse me if I have already said this: You do not have to respond to every tom, dick, and harry that writes a comment on U tube. Obviously, Holovanov thinks that the applause was dubbed in!
"Chocolate-fudge custard"- what a great description! Imo, Siepi's voice was one of the most ravshing basso voices on record. PrimoBaritono: thanks for posting so many of these gems :)
Just showed this to 3 friends (who are actually ALL of my friends) here in Yonkers, New York. EVERYBODY LOVED IT! Quality never goes out of style. Also, the cream always rises to the top. Thanks. We owe ya

It's obviously live because there is a mistake in the words that would never fly in a studio recording.

Cool! I sang this song at my last student recital. But I had to do all the recitative. I'm a bass, but I usually sing tenor II.

Trully stupenduous voice, I probably haven't heard a better version of this aria. Samuel Ramey comes close, though!

Well you are definitely wrong, it is live. 1956 from the MET. I do not know why you think it's not...but I don't really care either.

You don't believe it's live ?
First of all, do you think I'm a liar ?
Second, don't you hear the applause !?!?

"Questa Figlia imaculato" --first time I've ever heard these words. Is there a reason for the wrong words or was it just a flub?
luckymortal 4 years ago
He says "Questo giglio immacolato" :)
edraith 4 years ago
Ah, well that's better than"eyelash" (ciglio) in the G Schirmer Anthology. What's best? "Questo" or Si bel? Hmmm. Guess I'll go look it up.
luckymortal 2 years ago 2
Maybe "Sì bel giglio" in more correct.
Try on google with this keywords: "Ernani libretto" or "Ernani libretto karadar". You will find a portal that has quite correct librettos :)

That´s just ridiculously good singing! What a treat to hear him in a live recording.
