Funny thing is Chomsky's books were banned in the Soviet Union....andrew sullivan blatently lied here. (Ironically while accusing noam of being a liar)..
"... who support the Soviet Union as Chomsky did for so long, who've supported tyranny in all sorts of places as Chomsky has done, who've lied consistently as Chomsky has done".
Interesting how right after casually accusing Chomsky (slanderously of course) of supporting the Soviet Union, he also accuses Chomsky of "lying".
Has anyone read the gospel's definition of hypocrisy?
Pissed off at Bill Maher and his bullshit over-generalizations. Religion should have nothing to do with political views. Chomsky says it perfectly. How you interpret these values has a major effect on your political views- but it also has an effect on you as a whole. We need to stop sticking things in categories and recognize that everyone is an individual and everyone is entitled to their own unique set of values. Not all Christians are the same, not all Jews are the same etc.
It's like watching people with the intellectual capacity of a fly talking to a brilliant person. Chomsky doesn't state opinions - he states facts; the kind you can check in books, but then again I don't think any of these people have actually opened one up. So depressing.
Andrew Sullivan really proves what Chomsky says about intellectual’s subservience to power. And as for the ‘if you don’t support the invasion of Iraq you are anti-democracy and pro Sadam Hussain’ line: America was exactly that until Hussain stepped out of line and became disobedient. Then suddenly he is a monster, but not till then.
"a worldview in which saddam hussein is a source of good"? did he even bother to listen to what chomsky said? "theres either democracy or not"? thats the worldview of a ten year old.
and the thing about chomsky supporting the soviet union- well look for chomsky videos about that on youtube and you'll find out it's a lie in about ten seconds.
his head may be shiny but could somebody please polish his brain.. id love to see that dildo debate chomsky so that chomsky could humiliate him... then again it looks like he did a good job of humiliating himself.
Uh, no he didn't. In fact, there's a clip here on YouTube of a women aggressively challenging him in 1988 on his negative views of Vladimir Lenin! This is speaking aside from the fact that he certainly didn't support Stalin or any of the other Soviet leaders. I've heard him call the Soviet Union a "miserable tyranny" and a "state capitalist" society (in an obviously negative manner). I have never seen one instance of him supporting that country.
Wow this bald and bearded guy is a straight out liar. Chomsky supporting Saddam? Didn't Chomsky just call Saddam a brutal monster? Chomsky is a treasure to the world in philosophy, linguistics and politics.
Andrew Sullivan is wrong here, as he often is. Chomsky is one of the greatest thinkers and gifts to this world. Disappointing that Maher agrees with Sullivan after the interview. Maher is good in general, but he still clings to some old ideas. He should get Michael Parenti, Alfie Kohn, and Derrick Jensen on his program.
Sullivan's argument is like saying that if someone murders the head of the KKK they shouldn't go to jail because the head of the KKK is a racist dipshit and the world is better off without him.
Man I used to think Andrew Sullivan was capable of critical thinking before seeing this display of utter irrationality. I really wish they had kept the feed going to Chomsky could have laid waste to this apologist douche.
Noam Chomsky is a gift a great mind. I think we all have few chances in our life time to see greatness I only hope there are young minds listening too him, ready to take over were his legacy leaves off.
Probably one of the less stimulating of Chomsky's interviews, but nonetheless worth a watch. Particular to this one is Sullivan's response - filled with nothing but libel and misinformation. Chomsky does not view Saddam Hussein as a source of good - no sane person does. And yes, Nuremberg laws should apply to any state, notably one that consistently engages in outright aggression. This actually isn't a novelty, but in fact something uttered by U.S. Justice Robert Jackson.
That was pretty chickenshit for that guy to attack to that extent "after" Chomsky was already off air. A little stooge attacking the messenger because he can't defend his political ideology. Oh yeah, and it's no secret that Chomsky was anti-Leninist ALL of his life. Completely baseless.
Also, I was very disappointed in Maher. Just after Sullivan says that the US could have invaded purely the oil fields, he says that he agrees. Thumbs up if you dont agree.
governments, even with a reasonably well educated and sophisticated upper class (e.g. Germany, 1930s) have been able to "sell" wars to their people with reasons far removed from actual motives. It is sad that even in modern USA this can be done so effectively. Even if you disagree that the US went into Iraq for oil or other ulterior motives, at least realize that this sort of thing happens all the time, and be open to the possibility.
The most outrageous thing Sullivan said by far was that if the USA wanted the oil in Iraq, it could just invade the oil fields. The naivete of this statement should be obvious - all you really need to do is consider the inevitable outcry of the American people and the world following such a move. More importantly, however, is the fact that many Americans would agree with him. Sadly, this is why the Bush Administration got away with invading Iraq. Believe it or not, large and powerful (see above)
@cdphatty him, Norman Finkelstein and either Allan Nairn, Amy Goodman or someone like that. Maher's show has done quite enough to give voices to the same side that's regularly presented on cable/network news. For all his bitching about how TV news doesn't have dissidents on for interviews, he doesn't either. And for all his bs about how he's a "left libertarian," he rarely gives real left libertarians opportunities to give their views on his show. In fact, this might be the only exception.
He also states that Muslim women in England are having 6-8 babies and he fears that Englad will lose it's "Western" values.
Is that not racism? Does this not bear any similarity to the cowardly hate speeches Hilter splurted out. Maher is attempting to simulate Hitler - but he's targeting Muslims. We are all the same - tied together by our humanity. Lets not loose sight of that. Lets not fall prey to the delusional cowards like Maher. An apology will not suffice for your acid stained tongue.
In addition to being a racist Maher is also quite delusional. He states in the Western world there is an "equality of the sexes". How many women are murdered, raped and molested in America. This is also linked to the potrayal of women by the media - Bridalplasty. How many women are mutilating themselves. What type of equality is that Maher. Please get your facts strait before stating ridiculous lies.
Also he states in the Western world there is "respect for minorities" - now that's just funny
Here are some Maher statements "I don't feel as though I have to apologize for being a proud Westerner. When I say a Westerner I mean someone who believes in the values that Western people believe in that a lot of the Muslim world does not." The Western world has desicrated the lives of millions of people world wide; brutally murdered innocent people. The "Western World" (America) has attacked a country for resources; oil and opium. Maher is proud? What in God's name is there to be proud of.
When the AmericanArmyOfTerror bombed Iraq the Oscars went on air and I was encountered with a vile hypocrisy. The bombing, the mutilating of babies, children, mothers suddenly becomes acceptable, unquestionable, inoffensive. As long as the American people don't lose what's most important to them - their T.V. sets - their shopping malls - their Visas - they'll remain passively content. I digress. What enrages me is not the political hatred spreading (Maher) but the unrestrained indifference.
@deegan45 His hatred spreading agenda is targeted at muslims. Yes he makes "fun" of all religions but in regards to the Muslim religion he veils his violent rhetoric in clouds of "jokes" and "sarcasm" but what he is preaching is blatant hatred.
He does not make fun of Jews dying in the holocast. Currently hundreds of thousands of Muslims are being killed, are descriminated against and their entire nation is being systematically destroyed via the American Army Of Terror.
@IWillKeepThisAccount I answered that two posts down. On CNN he asked himself, "Am I a racist?" Then he proceeded to answer his own question. Yes Bill you are a racist. Despite how previously likable you were - with your jokes and witty criticisms - you cannot redeem yourself. Not after spewing hatred and vulgarity towards a group of people who have never done anything to u.
When Religulous came out - I thought WOW someone incredibilily smart is providing an unbiased perspective on religion.
@asexynurse Can you link that CNN interview please? And he is opposed to pretty much all religion, Christianity, Islam, Judaism, he finds them all to be false. I get that he primarily mocks Christianity and Islam but I don't think that makes him a racist. But then again, I will wait for you to link the interview, please. Thank you.
@IWillKeepThisAccount It's entitled "Bill Maher's Comments on Mohammed and Islam on The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer" on youtube.
In regards to Muslim's he takes it to an extreme. His tone, mannerisms, and body language transmit pure hatred. He systematically targets Muslim people. He does not do that with Christianity. He has no problem with the birth of Christian babies. And since when do babies, babies for crying out loud, become involved in some political hatred compaign.Maher is evil
Maher is such a one trick pony. He starts off the interview asking Chomsky about Christianity vs nationalism while Chomsky is neither. Asking him about it is silly.
@Tippersnore Maher is not a serious commentator. He clearly doesn't read much---or indeed anything. On other occasions, Chomsky has expressed a low opinion of both Maher and Jon Stewart.
@Tippersnore He said, 12 years ago he didn't, which would have put him in his 30's. To point out as well Chomsky was well known then again among the left, which bill wasn't really part of at the time, if you go back and watch hs old shows.

Didn't Chomsky refer to Hussein as a 'monster' in the interview? What a strong endorsement!
"People who supported the Soviet Union, as Chomsky did."
Wrong again, Chomsky was bitterly opposed to the Soviet Union, but he also happened to be quite opposed to some US activities during the Cold War.
I guess anything that isn't completely black and white is too complicated for Sullivan to process. Either that or he's a straw-manning cunt.
