Everyone keeps comparing them to Captain Beefheart. But the truth is that Mark Stewart and the boys didn't even know who the Captain was then. They just wanted to sound like a legit funk band, but it got filtered through a punk/dub style.
Hard to believe Nick Cave would acclaim this. Even his worst songs are better than this. Apart from a certain noisiness and beefheartness, I can't hear any resemblance to the Birthday Party's much better written songs.

I used to have this t-shirt....I wish i still had it...anyone know where i can get one? Although i have a 9 yr old son now, so i probably wouldn't feel so keen on wearing it!!!
@programkill wikipedia: "Their first gig, (was) supporting The Slits at Romeo and Juliet's in Bristol. They played a twenty minute version of what was to become "Papa's Got a Brand New Pigbag" to a very positive reception, and the next day O'Dell invited them to record the track for Y Records. At this point they adopted the name Pigbag, in reference to Chris Hamlin's scruffy cloth bag bearing a screen-printed warthog"
I think the sentiment here is largely true.. I think everybody has a price..and that doesn't necessarily mean for Sex. Some might disagree, but you go to work everyday don't you?
@messthetics Yes but there is a huge difference between letting srangers insert thair digits and apendeges inside various holes of your body versus Building a house or fliping a burger.
@KiffffiK I like building houses, and flipping burgers (we hold barbecues) and as for inserting things into my various orrifces.... i'm a bit skint, a Grand should just about cover it!
@erxfluis You can pick up this cut of the song on the "We Are All Prostitutes" retrospective. Feel free to drop me a private message if you can't find the album floating around. :-)
I still have the black'n'white version of this t-shirt from 79/80 (whenever it was) I dare not wear it because it is so thin and worn but the design is still there. great tune, great t-shirt (wheres the book?)

do someone remember this great sampler "wanna buy a bridge" from cherry red? pop group, scritti politti, cabaret voltaire, spizz energy, robert wyatt, slits, minus delta t, and some more
ahh, the sweet cacophony ... this one goes out to the new ruling class in the USA ... hypocrisy abounds! .... minus the jabs at capitalism, of course ... ( * )
Thanks. I've always wanted to hear more of that original album but any re-issues I've seen were way too expensive. This sounds a little higher pitched vocal-wise than I remember.
Check out another tune by Really Red called Prostitution if you don't already know it. Their Teaching You The Fear record is a great diverse sounding American hardcore record.
The remix of this is fucking dreadful. What wasted potential - imagine a dubby mix with these kind of rhythms. Instead they just plonked down some useless generic trendy bollocks.
I, and you and you. we all are prostitutes. If you want this album...buy a japanese (deleted) cd. I've got this shit on vinyl, kids. But I will not sell it. *cause you'll never have price enough...
there's already a dead body in yours. and if we're talkin bullshit, i just grew wings and flew into outer space where i met the magical pixie love. I got three wishes, one, to go back to earth, two, to do anything i want whenever, and three, that the dead body is in YOUR closet. there fore, you die unconditionally because my dead body holds u back from resending this 6 times while your dead body plucks out ur eyes and eats ur brains.
Lived in a hostil in london wore this little black badge with we are all protitutes on it and sang it everone I met even then it was true and is today now im in my 50s you to will learn to live the lie.... the cause our children will rise up against us because we are the ones to blame.. scary.
This song is available on the 5cd box set 'Punk And New Wave 1976-79'. You might me able to find it on E-bay. If your into post-punk its worth getting, as the final disc solely concentrates on this genre. Good luck.
