  • There is a small clearance between the tools (about 0.05 mm or 0.002 inches or more); this allows the air to escape when the powder is pressed. Also, by its nature, the material is always porous, meaning some of the air is still in the part (not under pressure because the material is like a sponge, with connected pores). Porosity makes the material more easily retain lubricants, desirable in many machine applications.
