  • Been on this one a few times, it's good fun. FWIW, the loading bay's inside a 40' cutting under the shop (which is built onto a hill), and while a blindside spin would *just* be possible, one false move would get you stuck, and recovery would be a pain. Besides, there's two doors, and if one has an artic on it there's even less space. I reckon the TT's a good thing.

I've done plenty of horror shops, and Somerfield/Co-op are some of the worst! Somerfield Larkhall, anyone? (One among many...)

  • wish i could have something like this at coop and somerfield stores

anyway we r the best drivers in uk

when u need to reverse 300 yards to reach one store with a 44 trailer with sharp bends and and cars everywhere cos its an high street ..... but this video is cool!!

  • Would be a good idea if they had used a little more thought.

Seems daft to drive the wagon in, an employee (banksman?) stops you in the right place, then you've got to sit there waiting for it to turn before you continue driving (in reverse to dock!

Should be that the wagon drives up to a raised stop, then driver goes off for a cuppa, the turntable turns and the loading dock extends to the tail.

This system does seem a bit pointless.

  • very neat turntable old fashioned idea that still works , may be the big shopping centres need to be planned better ,

  • what a pointless piece of crap......if there is room to park end to end you could screw it round easy peasy, no effort at all, just use ultra low tack surface to reduce scrub on the trailer tyres, and a banksman to cover the bad spots for inexperienced drivers.

  • lol

  • Why not design a Goods-In area that is big enough? I'm sure that all (not just ASDA's) stores are designed with minimal thought given to delivering stock to them. Lots of room to park customer's cars. Lots of room for the shop floor. No room for the trucks, to deliver. Without the trucks, there would be nothing on the shelves.

  • if asda have money to spend on turntables why cant they lower the prices it would be more useful to the people who give em 140 quid a week

  • M&S Chester have a smaller version...problem with that one is you have to drop the trailer pull along side it then get turned re-couple...bit of a ball ache but better than trying to reverse in from the road..

  • ASDA PUSSYS

  • lol reminds me of British Rail with their turntables... something which was first used in what 1900? or so... (dont quote me on this dont exactly know!)

  • asd

  • what a waste of money and time!

  • I bet a couple of urban artic trailers would have been 1/4 of the cost, or a water jet for the floor so you can just drive in and screw it round with ease, make a good saving like that and they can roll back the prices even more :) .

  • Is that to save those Asda fairies from reversing? Bless!!!!

  • two diff lorrys?

  • What a great idea well done Asda. No shunting back and forth. I worked for a company once that was doing a rebuild on one of their sites and when the drivers saw the plans we asked where the delivery point was, guess what they forgot about? the trucks coming in and had to redo the plans.

  • they use keltruck

  • thanks, i've been looking for this for a while.

  • They fit these where there is not room for the lorry to turn and reversing in would be either impossible of illegal

  • All women should have one of these installed underneath their cars

  • xD

  • de to je

  • was soll das sein omg fd

  • your right darren...wheres it all gonna end!! pml

  • this need the thunderbirds music in the background

  • there is a minor problem with it the roof is to low we have to lower the air to fit it in :P

  • we need one of those for the store in Morley, leeds

  • i shop there lol

  • What a waste of money, but might reflect more on the skills of them shopping trolley drivers. Could save asda a fortune in damage claims ?

  • @LeMagnum440 what, you think all supermarket drivers just pass their test and go straight onto supermarket work? In my time I've done tankers, continental fridge work, tippers and sleeping in tin towers on general haulage, I just happened to think it was a better deal getting paid the same and being home every night with much simpler work and not having to fiddle the frisbee.

Last time I checked a "supermarket trolley" was the exact same size as any other max cap artic.

  • OMFG TRUCKGASM

  • You could have turned the unit and trailer in that space..... Seems like a big measure to go to

  • You could use it for a truck showroom too!

  • every little helps...... lol i would have liked to back down the slope and watched their confused faces...

  • WHAT HAPPENS IF THERES A POWER CUT HALF WAY ROUND!!!! great all we need now is automated trailer hitch / unhitch including air, abs, electrics etc ...button in cab for legs up or down...another button for trailer brake...and a digital screen so you can enter unit reg on rear of trailer.... but i need the exercise so i will put fifth wheel safety clip in by hand...wheres me gloves??

  • @tonyhgv Heck no man the gloes will go on them selfs

  • thats why asda are so expensive. they got shit like that

  • jeez with this thing the challenge is out of it, and everyone can drive a truck, and the fn of driving is taken away. :S

  • all it needs now is a bucket and sponge

  • in response to mckerraljamie's comment,>how did you gain your experience? as my aul lad who learned to drive in the british army used to say, how the hell can you get experience if nobody will take you on, ??? i take it you just got into a cab and learned to reverse a 40ft first time round by the sheer will of god, i started with an agency a week after i passed MY test, coz no other sod would give me a chance,

  • @bigmc84 you just said it all . I lied my way into a job myself I had three years on a 7.5 I just forgot to tell them about the 7.5 my first job on an artic a 60 foot crane jib to teeside .never hit anything until my first shunt in 2000 .7 years after passing my test 7 years of experience didn't save me .

  • @blobby1972 i was lucky enough to get in with a small crowd here in dublin who do flat pack kitchens etc, they were stuck for a driver and went through the agency i had reg'd with when i passed my test, then after 12 weeks they gave me a full time job on their books, other than that, everywhere i went, the usual crap, sorry you have to be 25 or over, AND with 5 years experience, for insurance reasons it was like w.t.f. that's totally inpossible by the laws of time and COMMON SENSE, .

  • This is a great idea actually....more and more places are struggling for room, and this is a solution :)

  • i wonder what happens when there's no bosses around? prob nothing actually haha

  • thats cool all asda needs now is someone to invent something that makes there trucks run faster than 50 mph

  • @vonrikety they run at 50 bcos they wieght upto 44 tonnes

you wna try n stop that ?or wud yuu rather it hit u at 60? your choice

id like it t stop thanks

  • @marc18b Most the supermarket trucks are restricted 3-4ish KPH slower than the rest of the artics on the road, that small different in speed over such a big fleet would save them thousands every year in diesel because of that tiny increase in economy. Im 99% sure thats why they all have the slightly reduced restriction anyway. Would be interesting to hear from a driver that works for one of these companys.

  • @ElroyHarvey Tesco and sainsbury run some wagons restircted to 50, asda are at 90kph like everyone else. they just don't always drive them flat out, particularly if they are getting paid on the hour

  • This is a staged video. In reality there is no room to turn, the area is filled with empty pallets and cages . the turntable is definately rerquired.

  • which agencies are they then

mckerraljamie as I cant find any.

  • Great bit of kit but I still rely on that old fashioned skill - REVERSING!!

  • @DinoDoesStuff yea but supermarkets use a lot of agency wanabe's. and they have a on site safety record to protect.

  • Nowaday's agencie's will take you on the same day as you pass your test, they dont give a crap! Lorry driving has gone to the wall !

  • @mckerraljamie It's been like that for years hasn't it? When i first passed my Class 2 i struggled getting a full time job with no experience so signed up with an agency. I know a lot of people that used agency to get the experience. You have to drive to get the experience and companys want experienced drivers so it's a catch 22 situation... For one thing the test is a lot higher standard than it used to be if the older drivers even did one lol ;)

  • Are there any new drivers or experienced drivers who can offer advice on getting my first job. I now have my class 1 LGV, passed first time. Thanks

  • it is difficult, i know. most places, even agencies require at least 2 years driving experience. Your best bet is to visit all the agencies in your local area, and ask them for advice. once you have built up 2 years experience driving for agencies you might stand a better chance of getting a job with a firm

  • Best u-turn i've ever seen..no tyre scrub on the trailer,no need to use forward and reverse gear,no danger of hitting something in the numerous blind spots.

  • i agree even if there is room, does it in one hit and if a supermarket like asda has one it must save money!!!

  • look kerednotsobig1 my dad has been driving for tescos for 6 years now and before that he was an owner driver but that did not work out and before that and before all of his previouse driving jobs he drove for a firm called martin trux and guess what he drove to the middle east saudi, turkey etc... so personally i think he is a good driver as he has not crashed yet and he loves working for tescos as he does not have to rush abour any more like he has been doing fo the last 30 odd years or so

  • I helped open that store when the old Bearsden store closed, I remember being taken into the warehouse by the GSM Kelvin who showed me the working of it. All I could think was it was well cool, really something to be seen, then said, what if it breaks down? to which the reply was 12 crank handles, 12 guys 1....2....3 turn!! nightmare!!!

  • You're fucking crap you chav. Do you not understand basic English grammar?

  • Your English isn't any better... "You're fucking crap you chav." is not a sentence.

  • Thats not new ! i have been an HGV driver for 21 years and have been going round in circles from the day i passed my test !

  • only good in straight lines? you must be joking. only someone who's never done the job would say that, retail distribution has some of the tightest access in the industry. they have one of these in Llanelli now too, thank feck

  • hang on mate..been driving trucksa long time now, and as I said "only goodin straight lines!" been there done that, done Tesco's ,and Asda, before I saw how "JOBSWORTH" they all are, and CRAP at driving!

If they are that good why are the trailers all scraped, bent and bashed? And why is it always a Tesco,Or Asda truck parked in the long load bay or around the edge of lorry parks at service areas If they are really good at getting into tight parking places???

ha ha you will realise one day!!!

  • kerendsabighead, take it you are an agency driver then that cant get a permanent position with asda or tesco that makes you have the hatred attitude towards asda and tesco drivers?

    heres some advice....

your driving days are not finished yet,You never know what is around the corner for you in your lucky so far driving career, you may have a serious accident in the near future so when you finally retire you can post your derogatory remarks about other drivers on here big head.

  • Comment removed

  • asda drivers..only good at driving in stright lines anyway aren't they???

  • no they are the best

  • wow thats a brill idea

    never knew about them haha
