The facility, the dexterity, the creative genius of Erroll Garner leaves no doubt in my mind that he is greatest natural artist on piano I have ever experienced. Though our styles couldn't be more different, his music has been an inspiration to me over a lifetime as a professional musician. -Vince Vance, pianist/composer/entertainer
My father is a great piano player & he introduced me to Erroll.Ever since I`ve been listening to his music. He was a tremendous jazz artist!!!! I wish more people listened to such artists, not some Lady Gaga shit music!!!!
This is real music. The band has such class. When they go to the bridge of this song, Erroll looks to the audience as to say, "do you hear that". What a musician.
Something must be said about his right hand, it sounds exactly like a rhythm guitar. I'm not just talking about the four-to-the-bar comping. The tone also sound like a guitar. I remember when I first started listening to Errol Garner, I thought he had a guitar player in his band. Nope, his right hand is really a freak of nature. How he got that really relaxed sound in his right hand, while popping every note in his left is a mystery to me. Beautiful playing.
Hey Crowflaz, yeah, Fats is the epitome of joy at the keys. Erroll brought that and an uncanny ability to blend all great musical sounds into a coherent, lovable expression of his life. I continue to be dumbfounded at his great stuff.
@Stevorific1 You know you are right about that Ken Burns omission. I would never of known about him without the Jazz Heritage people sending me a CD of his music by mistake!
I've probably played this video 50 times since discovering it a year ago. Words cannot describe the way I feel about this man's playing. Out of this world.
No one ever came close in terms of expressiveness yet some critics even claimed that he was not a jazz pianist despite his global concerts being "sell-outs" to jazz fans for over 20 years- when others in the genre couldn't fill a telephone box. I was and remain overwhelmed and fascinated by the sheer beauty, joy and virtuosity in his playing- especially "Concert by the Sea. " Thanks to those submitting videos enabling a wider audience to enjoy and appreciate his sheer genius.
@golsno147 What do the criticks know eh. They wouldn't know what jazz was if it hit them square in the face with a brick. All of the present forms of Jazz came from people like Garner's whose particular expressive contribution is embraced by most if not all Jazz pianists and piano players these days, whether they know it and like it or not.. Garner was a God.
If the late great Mr Garner had been any more cool, he'd have been frozen! His tragic death in an auto crash left a hole in the hearts of music lovers everywhere. THANK YOU for sharing this delightful clip with us! You've made my day & my week! :)
Erroll starts by making the audience guess what he going to play then straight in. Theme is brilliant, then the wedding march for the lady is a tramp is just inspired. The improvisation is then fabulous. Thank you.
@Redflowers9 - Tatum was way ahead of his time and probably the most skilled jazz piano player (although Oscar Peterson had great skill and command of the keyboard), but I consider Garner the greatest "artist" -- to me, his approach was a work of art performed on the piano. And, he was a superb showman... he put on a great show.
@johnbresnik Thanks for the info, I've only heard a lot about Tatum although I've listened to many others and now you mention it, it did sound quite original. What makes you feel good about this type of music?
@Redflowers9 - the improvisation, the rhythm and the way he structures his chords (the voicing). But, what's even more amazing to me (as a piano player), is that he isn't looking at the keyboard most of the time.
Recorded in London and quite superb - Erroll at his best! And look at the equally fantastic (but very tiny) Eddie Calhoun - just about big enough to play his bass!
It doesn't matter how rotten a day I've had, or how terrible I feel, when I listen to Erroll Garner play I suddenly want to jump up and start dancing. It's joyful and playful and utterly amazing. The angels may sing Mozart when they're on duty, but when they have a coffee break, they listen to Erroll play and dance for JOY!!
he just went to church on their ass, and they didnt even know it... they should be running up and down the isles... and they just give a golf clap...ooohh jazz music... but God will have mercy on them, because they lost their souls. Thank God for Errol Garner... a true blessing.
Still unbelievable -- a piano player touched by God. Apart from the easygoing, effortless performance, I especially dig those wonderful close-ups of his face -- a man deeply in love with his music and the audience.
Feel free to drop by my little swingin jazz site. The link is in my profile.
Yep by far my favorite pianist. Tatum plays far too many arpeggios for me and strays too far from the original music. I think comparing the 2 is wrong really as Tatum was far more skilled on the keys technically, its Garners musical simplicity which is awesome. Waller was from Tatums era and i much prefer his music as well.
true, Tatum was legally blind, but Garner never looks at the keyboard anyway... so they both played without looking at the keyboard... absolutely amazing...!
Garner was the most inventive and original jazz pianist in the history of jazz... sorry Tatum.. you were amazing, but I'd rather listen to Garner.. he was having fun and was very entertaining.
Haha!!! That's a great version from one of the masters!! They are great to watch

That's a natural talent - there's a quite a lot of long jumps in both hands simultaneously, but he doesn't even glimpse the keyboard.
