@RichardElden It's common though for young men who have a secret crush on an older woman to pretend they don't like her ; it's a widely accepted phenomenon
@RichardElden He could have, it was workable but ultimately he should have not sacrificed his principles even if we had need for a second election. The Tories would never have got a majority after people saw the results. We could clear the entire budget defecit with the £70 billion losses on big shot company tax evasion if the Govt went after it, instead of making a mountain out of a molehill making a bigger noise out of benefit fraud which is relatively small potatoes
@RichardElden Nah, he could have gone with Brown but the pussy would have exposed himself as a weakling soon anyway. Besides he has a crush on Cameron. Millions who were dumb enough to vote LibDem as an alternative to Labour thinking they would get a majority only did so cos they were temporarily disillusioned by the credit crunch but now as Brown predicted we have a double dipper. There IS peace in N.I. Patrick Magee who nearly blew Maggie's ass off is now close pals with other Brighton victims
@RichardElden That's just a cop out. Clegg should never have relinquished his most important political priorites merely to join the coalition. That made him look like the weak sheep that he is to all the people who voted LibDem.None wanted the Tories determining all the important stuff. He should never have joined if that was the case ; he didn't HAVE to. You realistically know you doon't speak for all the people in Southern England, let alone all of it. Most love the Peace process inc. the IRA
@RichardElden That's just a cop out as if his most passionate political priorites had to be relinquished, then it was no point joining the coaltion ; he didn't HAVE to. He merely made himself look the weak sheep he is, as all the more important stuff is determined by the Tories. What LibDem voter ever wanted THAT ??. You realistically know you don't speak for millions of people in the South of England at all, let alone all of England. Most people in general love the Peace process, even the IRA
@RichardElden Well that's what all the people who voted LibDem think ; they see him as Cameron's submissive, nervous wet pussy plaything sat next to him in the commons the whole time like a lovesick schoolboy. Thing is you contradict yourself saying the 'vast majority' of English vote Tory when at the same time you dismiss any English city north of London as containing worthless benefit scum. You live in a fantasy world to suit any argument ; you can't have it both ways Wan
@RichardElden You're living totally in denial, Lol. Everyone thinks Clegg is a big fibber. I told you about the English didn't I ; the majority are those you call 'nothern benefit scroungers' ! . Miliband told the unions to stuff it today and that he in no way advocates strikes. This has pleased the southern commuter belt and boosted his popularity to a vital extent, thus ensuring his GE victory. I think the NHS is way over funded as none of my family smokes or drinks at all
@RichardElden As I say, the vast majority of the public despise the coalition, particularly the Tories, and will vote for Labour as the only other main party in spite of who is leader at the next GE. Millions who voted LibDem have been horrified that not only did Cameron's pubic school fag sell his ass to the Tories, as well as lie about all his pre-electoral pledges. Consequently the LibDems under him have committed suicide and even many lower paid Tory voters have jumped ship cos of the cuts
@RichardElden He doesn't have to do much at all really ; the coalition is doing the best job destroying itself from the inside. Miliband only has to wait a couple more years without doing anything, and that's if there isn't a vote of no confidence in these idiots before that, Lol. Even if there was a new leader of the Labour party before then, whoever it is will have an easy and effortless passage to no.10
@RichardElden Don't give me that Juan, that's a cop out on your part, you hate everyone, Lol. How about Ed Milliband. You could do him, but you don't fancy the time for the crime. I told you, it's no good just wishing people get sick ; it determines nothing. They might with or without your desires, as you might yourself
@RichardElden Well the thing is now you're here, you can start assassinate people yourself to administer your passion instead of hoping and waiting for others to do it. You could be immortalized in the history books like your idols Mark Chapman etc.
....what the album WOULD have been like if Brian had made up his own mind conclusively about tracks included / mixes / running order for tracks BACK THEN in '67 so I've become sceptical after years of bootlegs, re-mixes etc etc , hearing 'THIS is the DEFINITIVE 'Smile' now' etc, then 'NOW this is the definitive Smile' etc, when each is a variation on the former
@RichardElden Lol, Wilson was nearly eighty years old and enjoyed his life to the full regardless of you who he didn't know about. Mowlam enjoyed her life without hearing of you as well
@RichardElden Saying 'I'm glad 9 / 11 happened' etc would seem just as silly and immature to those who see it as your other comments but wouldn't surprise many who have seen them if you had. Saying you wish someone had cancer is irrelevant as one cannot make anyone get cancer just by wishing it on them
@RichardElden For you to say 'I'm glad 9 / 11 happened' etc would be just as silly and immature to most people but it wouldn't surprise many who have seen your daft comments if you had. It doesn't matter what you say you wish for because you can't MAKE people get cancer by saying you hope they get it, so it's irrelevant
@RichardElden He killed a person and might have killed anyone else because of his disordered thinking and emotions ; it would have been just as bad if he had
@RichardElden He's not, he is antisocial and dangerous. Most people think that. You know it too but you feel the need to make provocative comments on here because you need to take your inner pain out on something because you wrongly believe people don't like you, even though many people probably do. It's just deep down you're not convinced. If they knew what you needed to do to feel good, they would try to help you.The people on Youtube who are mature can see through you anyway and aren't offended
@RichardElden Not to most people. He's an antisocial and dangerous person. You know that too but you only want to shock because you feel people don't like you when they do but you're not convinced. Many who love you probably dont know you need to write deliberately provocative things on here to attempt to offend people ; the mature ones aren't offended and like me see through you. If those who know you knew, they would be surprised and try to help you with your pain
@RichardElden Lol, you wrote that first about two years ago Wan, think of new people to take your inner hurt out on. Also, I said before, God doesn't exist but how is Mark 'blessed' ? He's very sick and never getting out.
It's George, then John answering. By the way...no sense in arguing about something that is 50 years old. They quit arguing about Beach Boys vs. Beatles at least 2 generations ago.
I can't believe all the negative comments. Technically speaking, there is nothing inaccurate about the title or description of this video. John speaks on the phone and Brian speaks on the phone. Yes of course it's Paul in between the two but who cares...??? I was around in the sixties, believe me I've seen all the inaccuracies printed from those who are just discovering the Beatles. Just leave a thank you for posting and move on...!!!
not really, the beach boys never attended a beatles session, and the only beatle who was at a beach boys was Paul, but then only Brian was there, not the rest of the band.
they recorded chewing sounds for vegetables together. (with other words, they ate).
@ClassicRockerSr101 Actually, Paul ate some celery in the studio while Brian was recording "Vega-Tables" for the legendary SMiLE album and Brian decided to use his celery eating as the percussion for the song. Later, Paul played a little of "A Day in the Life" for Brian.
@ClassicRockerSr101 but john said they met hundreds of times, one particular time was at the grammy's and brian asked a man to introduce him to john and john was very polite but the same thing happened a few minutes later and afterwords john said he's met brian many times...poor brian he was in a really poor mental state at that time bless his heart
This is very entertaining to me... I'll assume you meant "don't know"??
Anyway, I'd readily bet everything I own... there is no doubt at all. I'd expect you to be able to distinguish Lennon and McCartney's voice if you're any kind of expert. Paul answers first and then John. That simple. Kid.
@grands1am And thats because you're that dumb that dont know when something is a joke..you need to think my friend :)....and lennon...lennon was more has more diversity of songs that paul..and he can do more types of music than paul..compare both artist's songs and check it for yourself..good night.
Paul and John both had great respect and admiration for Brian.Carl Wilson and Mike Love came backstage to see them when the Beatles played in Portland in 1965.Mike Love went to India with the Beatles in 1968 when they saw the Mararishi.John and Mike actually hit it off well.
pet sound better thar revolver ?? ou are out of your mind !!! revolver, sgt peppers, abbey road, i think any album of the beatles is better that pet sounds.....
What IS the matter with people? Always bleating on about some nonsense or other such as 'John is better than Paul, Pet Sounds is better than Pepper, Ringo couldn't drum.' All of it stupid. All the great bands and musicians egged each other on in the sixties to phenomenal heights. The Beatles without Paul and Ringo would be nothing (no Helter Skelter, I Saw Her Standing There, Things We Said Today etc ad infinitum), Dylan loved The Beatles and vice versa and they all loved The Beach Boys. Fab!
@julbim dude..lol Paul and Ringo are good and everything but you have to give John Lennon most of the credit, you have no idea how big of a genius he was when it came to songwriting and creating psychadelic music, all of them man. The Beatles will always be my #1 fav band till the end of my days.
@emilioortiz14 John was always in awe of Paul's gifts. I believe he said to Yoko
" Why does everyone cover Paul's songs?" George Martin said something similar. John and Paul were fabulous. Thank heavens for both. Would people not want Paul's great Beatles songs...he was stupendous and what a bass guitarist. The four boys were wonderful together. What a collective sound and Ringo must never be underestimated. His drumming was unique, just listen to Hello Goodbye, Rain, You Won't See Me etc.etc.
ringo is one of the best drummers ever, well, paul was a better musician (on instruments) for sure, john better with the lyrics, both equal on musical writing skills ImO.
@julbim You're absolutely right. The Beatles and the Beach Boys (well mainly Brian Wilson) were so inspired by each others music that it unconsciously created a competition with the two bands to create the greatest album in the world. Without Rubber Soul there wouldn't have been Pet Sounds and without Pet Sounds there wouldn't have been Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
@julbim I would have say Sgt. Peppers, of course, mainly because they introduced a new concept to popular music that the studio can also be an instrument and recordings do not have to be reproduced live. But just imagine if Brian Wilson released Smile. That album could of literally changed the course of music by inspiring other artists to emerge or inspired the Beatles creating something even more amazing than any of their albums they ever released. It's weird to think that could of happened.
@dogonaleash Sgt Pepper was mind blowing. I'll never forget standing outside my local record shop when I was 12 and seeing the album cover given pride of place in the window. You just knew you were in for another fantastic Beatles adventure in sound. And they unbelievably produced an album even more popular later i.e. Abbey Road. What with the fantastic Christmas present of 1968 (the White Album), I literally thank God for giving us this gift called the Beatles. I have Smile as first done..wow!
@TheKenfig Good to hear from you TheKenfig. Abbey Road may, in your view, have lesser-quality songs than Pepper but it is incredible that they could, in commercial terms, top or even follow Sgt Pepper considering that it was at the time so iconic. The White Album is an incredible achievement in itself with songs like Back In The USSR, Dear Prudence, Happiness Is A Warm Gun, Blackbird, Helter Skelter and so on. Also, isn't it ironic that George's song, Here Comes The Sun, is their most popular.
@julbim Don't get me wrong, in terms of sound engineering, production and gloss, it is great although when I consider trash like Mean Mr. Mustard and Polythene Pam, even in context, I think they would be derided if they weren't the Beatles. Lennon & McCartney songs are much better on all of their other albums. For me, Maxwells is awful as well. Georges' songs are the best songs really. And L & M have SOME great ones on there. The white album is STILL patchy, but includes some sublime work
@julbim Hi again. The thing about Mean Mr Mustard and Polythene Pam is that John was in such great humour, something very Beatley that never really came to the fore again in his solo career. That's why one should treasure the lightness on display in those tracks. Abbey Road is glorious as a very delightful piece of music. Side One had the brilliant Come Together, Something and Oh Darling and the playing and autumn beauty of Side Two (from Here Comes The Sun on cd) is heart melting and nostalgic.

@julbim What I think is that the best of it is up there with the best of the 'White album' but I prefer the white album overall and tracks like 'Oh Darling' are great and enjoyable, but it's as a song not up there with McCartneys best songs which include his greatest works on Sgt Pepper, Revolver, Help ! and Rubber Soul, or like songs of his as good as 'And I Love Her', 'Things We Said..', 'All My Loving', 'Penny Lane', 'Hey Jude' & many many others
@dogonaleash Smile project could not be realised fully because of the emotional state of Brian Wilson. You can hear that in some of the half finished material. Much of it is not at all focused and the state of a disordered mind. It was a vicious circle ; Brian COULD not be satisfied enough with it and that's because he was obsessive by then and never would be, but with a lot of stuff that wasn't good enough because he wasn't focused and so it goes around
@TheKenfig Smile wasn't realized because Mike Love was a dickhead with no vision. Have you heard Smile since Brian has put it together with his new band? It's AMAZING.
@Mozart1220 Nah, it's as I said ; the patchy work of a mentally ill man. Pet Sounds is a masterpiece because Wilson had not lost control of himself but he gradually lost it after that, creating only SOME great stuff for the next project. 'Smile' never was as it was not realised AT THE TIME. It was no good trying to finish it later because Brian had changed and it's no good trying to recreate something unfinished in the first place either
@TheKenfig Good Vibrations was NOT "patchy" nor was Heroes and Villains or Surf's Up. You have as much "vision" as Mike Love. Have you HEARD Smile? It's pretty much exact from all the demos, they just put them togetehr and had Van Dyke Parks finish off a few lyrics The only part I don't like 100% is Brian went back to his original lyrics for Vibrations, thogh I suspect that's from hearing the released version for 40 years. I still like it, it's just my brain is used to the other lyrics.
@Mozart1220 Oh here we go, another person on Youtube who has to start insulting people personally when they dont like someone's view point. And who SAID those tracks are poor then eh ? Come on, who said it if you're gonna say they aren't patchy, someone must have said they WERE. Demos are not the same thing ; Brian aborted his project cos it was never gonna be good ENOUGH for him because he was confused and didn't know fully what he wanted, like with mania, it becomes obsessive yet unfulfilling
@TheKenfig I don't recall insulting you. I merely asked you if you had heard the recent "Smile", and that you obviously lack the vision to see the genius of the 66 stuff I also mentioned, that one of the main reasons it was scrapped was lack of support from particularly Mike Love. We are both right there if the stories are true right? I mentioned three completed songs which were to be included on Smile. Much of the rest was SUPPOSED to be "patchy" because it flows from one thing to another.
@Mozart1220 Why would anyone consider you asking if I'd heard something an insult ? ; saying I 'obviously' lack vision and comparing me with someone you irrationally don't like, IS.It's patronising as I have been listening to all sorts of music as a discerning collector since I was a child in the 1960s,and am a great fan of the Beach Boys ; I have listened an analysed their music for my own enjoyment many times.I love those tracks such as GVs, H&Vs, Surfs Up & Cabin but dont like the rest of it

@TheKenfig And we all have to accept YOUR assesment as gospel and move on right? Got it. No patronising there eh? HAVE YOU HEARD SMILE SINCE BRIAN WILSON FINISHED IT? You still have not answered that question.
@Mozart1220 You tend to just make things up and put words in peoples mouths the whole time. In the limited characters per comment I prioritise. I bought the 2004 'Smile' just after it came out. I didn't like it much, as Brians voice sounded too old, naturally and understandably. I dont like all those scrappy bits and pieces of which there are so many I forget the exact names for some. Flowing isn't the same as patchy. The problem is whatever is served up as Smile we will never know exactly....
@Mozart1220 Are you a fuckin' optician ? ; you sound like you think you're one. Brian was sick. 'Millions' liked it eh ? Not bad for something that was never even released
@Mozart1220 Yeah, and all the bootlegs are inconsistent, claiming in their own way to be the 'definitive' version. It was NOT released in 67 to Brian's satisfaction THEN, and that's what the significant thing is to me. I bought the Wilson 2004 version when it was released and was very disappointed. I WILL get this supposed 'definitive' original version when itis released, but we can never know exactly what the original would have been if Brian had been satisfied & released it back then
First of all, it would be THREE geniuses, as Paul McCartney was one of the voices you were hearing. And secondly, there was no chatting between geniuses with different styles, as Brian was talking to no one but the disc jockey. The Beatles' part of that conversation was pre-recorded from an 'open-ended' interview tape that the group supplied to radio stations so that any DJ (or guest of a DJ) could sound like they were personally connecting with The Fab Four.
HAHA, you're all fuckin morons for arguing over taste in music! LOL
I mean, honestly. We live in a world where people dont have enought to eat, wars happen, people rape and kill each other, disease needlessly wipes people out in third world countries, and here we all are... Ripping the shit out of each other from the comfortable safety of our computer screens over what? Our personal taste in music. A muture and enlightened group are we! :-)
The Beatles (like many others) prerecorded answers that were sent out promotionally with sheets showing the questions, for whoever in the media wanted to pretend on air to have spoken with them. And also gave press conferences, recordings of which could be used in the same way. Whoever edited this together with Wilson's involvement didn't notice that "No it's a dirty rumor, we don't" was McCartney and "We cut it ourselves" was Lennon.
The Beatles had loads of top tunes every year, put they should have put them all in one album every year. Imagine Revolver with Rain, Paperback Writer and even hey bulldog, they should have scrapped tunes like yellow submarine and good day sunshine or something. Same with pepper. Imagine pepper with strawberry fields, fool oth and iam t walrus on it! Put some george tunes into abbey road and scrap maxwell and o garden and so on.. would have been fuckin' epic!
This was actually cut together and made to sound like a phone conversation for a radio program back in the day. Brian's question is obviously scripted.

The Beatles were WAY more influential than the Beach Boys. When I say 'Beach Boys' I am referring to Brian's more musically creative input as opposed to the surf stuff (which I am not keen on).
Why? Because the Beatles music captured the times and was very accessible to all age groups (you have Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey covers!). You have to have a rare mindset to take on board Brian's influence. It's a lot harder to grasp - and hence its influence on a more cult level IMO. :)
the beach boys didnt sell a hundred thousand singles a day by not being "accessible" and their surf rock was at LEAST as interesting as the early beatles stuff... AND more creative than the early beatles work... its only AFTER hearing pet sounds that they kicked it up and came out with sgt peppers... IF Brians influence is truly "harder to grasp" its only because it is deeper and therefore more serious art... the fact is that millions of screaming teen girls bought most of either bands albums
I think it's kind of stupid to attribute the creation of the Beatles creation of world changing albums like Revolver and Sgt. Pepper to Pet Sounds completely. I'd say that while that may have been an influence, the Beatles were heading in that direction anyway. The Beach Boys worshipped Rubber Soul, and they had meetings to try and come up with ideas for an album that would be just as good. More creative? I could argue that it was the Beatles that made the Beach Boys kick up there game.
i agree... as a musician myself i can tell u its IMPOSSIBLE to say that the music was inspired by one singular thing alone... it comes from EVERYTHING around you... history, society, family, politics, influences etc etc etc....
what kind of arsehole can't compare the BB and the Beatles with n sync (i dont even know how to spell it) and Backstreet Boys???? God! have to read extremely silly things here eeh!
two geniuses i'll always look up to .... no need to make stupid comparisons, think about this, John Lennon had another genius by his side that was obviously Paul, Brian did everything by himself only, i'm not saying that the rest of the beach boys were thick, just saying that geniuses like Paul, John and Brian are not found everyday!!! I love the three of them! My idols. I'm Julian from Argentina and i'm 21. I record music at home and the Beatles and the Beach Boys are my inspiration
I don't think that Sgt. Peppers was the best album of all time. No album is, its all opinion. I think the reason that Peppers is always ranked number 1 is because of its innovations. And for the same reason, Pet Sounds is ranked number 2.
I personally like the Beach Boys more than the Beatles. But I would have to be nuts to say that the BBs are more influential than the Beatles. There's just no comparison between ANY group and the Beatles. The fact is that we always want our own favorite group to be the BEST, but facts show us that the Beatles have had a greater influence on popular music than any other recording act. Sure Pet Sounds influenced Sgt. Pepper. But early Beatles inspired Brian Wilson to make ASL, Today, SD, etc.
Now about those comments about which band was better (Beach Boys or Beatles)...I like The Beach Boys...but doesn't this arguement remind you of the 90s-early 2000s arguement about which was really better----N'sync or Backstreet Boys--? It's funny how people always argue over boybands! I love it. Nice video though.
That's great for you, and I'm sure there are millions that would prefer that as well. The fact is that the BB and the Beatles were both great groups and pioneered rock in their own ways. The influence of the Beatles is so much more tangible than that of the Beach Boys is all I'm saying. Not trying to dis America's favorite band, but its the truth. John Lennon and Paul McCartney were the greatest songwriters that ever lived. Brian Wilson is great, but he can't compare with their best material.
ok, boys, first - amount of sold disc is the value of music
second - nothing in the world can be biggest then beatles and beatles discography
third - according to second, sorry but nothing can be biggest then the SMiLE - check out the visionary, the lyrics, the secret meanng, the poetry the interpretation behind the notes, come on...
p.s.: i love the voice of young Brian when he just talks
You listen to things in context. People were trying to get some animosity or jealousy going between them and it just wasn't there - at least not on the part of Brian Wilson. It's interesting to actually hear BW instead of giving in to the BEACH BOYS vs. BEATLES thing the media wanted to create. That's why. And Mike Love initially didn't think they were a threat to BB popularity; then decided to just continue with surf music, but ended up in India with them in 1968.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You think so? I mean the music was COMPLETELY different. John Lennon and Paul McCartney's works (while with the Beatles) were different enough, but compared to Wilson's it was COMPLETELY different. The works of Lennon like "Strawberry Fields" (which actually made Wilson pull over when he heard it, it was so great), or McCartney's "Eleanor Rigby" were much more complicated and influential than anything Wilson put out. Sgt. Pepper's is greater than Pet Sounds and easily more influential.
Pet Sounds is easily AS good as Sgt. Peppers and Smile would have been better had it been finished at the time. Do a wikipedia search and you'll find that Paul McCartney thought "God Only Knows" was the most beautful thing he had ever heard at the time...
Yeah...because Wikipedia is definitely a reliable source. That's ridiculous, Pet Sounds (in terms of influence) is NOWHERE near as influencial as Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. ANY reliable source will confirm that, Rolling Stones Magazine consistently rates it the greatest album of all time. Anyway, I can't argue your preference, as beauty is in the eye (or ear) of the beholder, but in terms of influence Sgt. Pepper definitely beats Pet Sounds.
Anyway, do you know why Smile was shelved? Oh yeah, it was because Brian Wilson was so moved by John Lennon's Strawberry Fields Forever, that he broke down sobbing, saying that the Beatles had "got there first" in reference to the psychedelic sound he was trying to achieve. So, the Beatles owned the Beach Boys with Strawberry Fields Forever.
Wikipedia was just the only source i could remember off the top of my head... it's a popular opinion of McCartney's anyway. Smile was shelved 1. Because the other members didn't understand what the hell Brian was doing, and it bothered him 2. because brian was a depressed loon that couldn't handle the pressure... several music articles from back then features previews of what was rumoured to be the greatest album of all time. No doubt Sgt. Pepper is more influential though.
Don't let someone who references Rolling Stone get you down about music. Paul McCartney could record himself taking a shit and Rolling Stone would call it brilliant. That whole magazine was made up to celebrate Sgt. Pepper (which I agree is a great album) and the summer of love. The magazine is a commercial piece of crap. Don't know why I put this as a reply, but when some asshole says the Beach Boys were shitty and sites Rolling Stone, I have to say SOMETHING.
this is a mash up of interviews with brian and paul and john.

TheKenfig 5 months ago
....what the album WOULD have been like if Brian had made up his own mind conclusively about tracks included / mixes / running order for tracks BACK THEN in '67 so I've become sceptical after years of bootlegs, re-mixes etc etc , hearing 'THIS is the DEFINITIVE 'Smile' now' etc, then 'NOW this is the definitive Smile' etc, when each is a variation on the former
TheKenfig 5 months ago

It's just deep down you're not convinced. If they knew what you needed to do to feel good, they would try to help you.The people on Youtube who are mature can see through you anyway and aren't offended

@RichardElden Not to most people. He's an antisocial and dangerous person. You know that too but you only want to shock because you feel people don't like you when they do but you're not convinced. not really, the beach boys never attended a beatles session, and the only beatle who was at a beach boys was Paul, but then only Brian was there, not the rest of the band.
they recorded chewing sounds for vegetables together. (with other words, they ate).
OropherThranduil 9 months ago
@ClassicRockerSr101 Actually, Paul ate some celery in the studio while Brian was recording "Vega-Tables" for the legendary SMiLE album and Brian decided to use his celery eating as the percussion for the song. Later, Paul played a little of "A Day in the Life" for Brian.

Fab!
julbim 2 years ago 40
@julbim dude..lol Paul and Ringo are good and everything but you have to give John Lennon most of the credit, you have no idea how big of a genius he was when it came to songwriting and creating psychadelic music, all of them man. The Beatles will always be my #1 fav band till the end of my days.
emilioortiz14 1 year ago
@emilioortiz14 John was always in awe of Paul's gifts. I believe he said to Yoko
" Why does everyone cover Paul's songs?" George Martin said something similar. John and Paul were fabulous. Thank heavens for both. Would people not want Paul's great Beatles songs...he was stupendous and what a bass guitarist. The four boys were wonderful together. What a collective sound and Ringo must never be underestimated. His drumming was unique, just listen to Hello Goodbye, Rain, You Won't See Me etc.etc.

OropherThranduil 9 months ago
@julbim You're absolutely right. The Beatles and the Beach Boys (well mainly Brian Wilson) were so inspired by each others music that it unconsciously created a competition with the two bands to create the greatest album in the world. Without Rubber Soul there wouldn't have been Pet Sounds and without Pet Sounds there wouldn't have been Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
dogonaleash 7 months ago
@dogonaleash Good to hear from you dogonaleash. Curious to know what you regard as the greatest album in the world.
julbim 7 months ago
@julbim I would have say Sgt. Peppers, of course, mainly because they introduced a new concept to popular music that the studio can also be an instrument and recordings do not have to be reproduced live. But just imagine if Brian Wilson released Smile. That album could of literally changed the course of music by inspiring other artists to emerge or inspired the Beatles creating something even more amazing than any of their albums they ever released. It's weird to think that could of happened.
dogonaleash 7 months ago
@dogonaleash Sgt Pepper was mind blowing. I'll never forget standing outside my local record shop when I was 12 and seeing the album cover given pride of place in the window. You just knew you were in for another fantastic Beatles adventure in sound. And they unbelievably produced an album even more popular later i.e. Abbey Road. What with the fantastic Christmas present of 1968 (the White Album), I literally thank God for giving us this gift called the Beatles. I have Smile as first done..wow!
julbim 7 months ago
@julbim Abbey Road is Lennon / McCartney's poorest album for their material. The album could have been a lot better.
TheKenfig 6 months ago
@TheKenfig Good to hear from you TheKenfig. Abbey Road may, in your view, have lesser-quality songs than Pepper but it is incredible that they could, in commercial terms, top or even follow Sgt Pepper considering that it was at the time so iconic. The White Album is an incredible achievement in itself with songs like Back In The USSR, Dear Prudence, Happiness Is A Warm Gun, Blackbird, Helter Skelter and so on. Also, isn't it ironic that George's song, Here Comes The Sun, is their most popular.
julbim 6 months ago
@julbim Don't get me wrong, in terms of sound engineering, production and gloss, it is great although when I consider trash like Mean Mr. Mustard and Polythene Pam, even in context, I think they would be derided if they weren't the Beatles. Lennon & McCartney songs are much better on all of their other albums. For me, Maxwells is awful as well. Georges' songs are the best songs really. And L & M have SOME great ones on there. The white album is STILL patchy, but includes some sublime work
TheKenfig 6 months ago

TheKenfig 5 months ago
@dogonaleash Smile project could not be realised fully because of the emotional state of Brian Wilson. You can hear that in some of the half finished material. Much of it is not at all focused and the state of a disordered mind. It was a vicious circle ; Brian COULD not be satisfied enough with it and that's because he was obsessive by then and never would be, but with a lot of stuff that wasn't good enough because he wasn't focused and so it goes around
TheKenfig 6 months ago
@TheKenfig Smile wasn't realized because Mike Love was a dickhead with no vision. Have you heard Smile since Brian has put it together with his new band? It's AMAZING.
Mozart1220 5 months ago
@Mozart1220 Nah, it's as I said ; the patchy work of a mentally ill man. Pet Sounds is a masterpiece because Wilson had not lost control of himself but he gradually lost it after that, creating only SOME great stuff for the next project. 'Smile' never was as it was not realised AT THE TIME. It was no good trying to finish it later because Brian had changed and it's no good trying to recreate something unfinished in the first place either
TheKenfig 5 months ago
@TheKenfig Good Vibrations was NOT "patchy" nor was Heroes and Villains or Surf's Up. You have as much "vision" as Mike Love. Have you HEARD Smile? It's pretty much exact from all the demos, they just put them togetehr and had Van Dyke Parks finish off a few lyrics The only part I don't like 100% is Brian went back to his original lyrics for Vibrations, thogh I suspect that's from hearing the released version for 40 years. I still like it, it's just my brain is used to the other lyrics.
Mozart1220 5 months ago
@Mozart1220 Oh here we go, another person on Youtube who has to start insulting people personally when they dont like someone's view point. And who SAID those tracks are poor then eh ? Come on, who said it if you're gonna say they aren't patchy, someone must have said they WERE. Demos are not the same thing ; Brian aborted his project cos it was never gonna be good ENOUGH for him because he was confused and didn't know fully what he wanted, like with mania, it becomes obsessive yet unfulfilling
TheKenfig 5 months ago
@TheKenfig I don't recall insulting you. I merely asked you if you had heard the recent "Smile", and that you obviously lack the vision to see the genius of the 66 stuff I also mentioned, that one of the main reasons it was scrapped was lack of support from particularly Mike Love. We are both right there if the stories are true right? I mentioned three completed songs which were to be included on Smile. Much of the rest was SUPPOSED to be "patchy" because it flows from one thing to another.
Mozart1220 5 months ago

Mozart1220 5 months ago
@Mozart1220 You tend to just make things up and put words in peoples mouths the whole time. In the limited characters per comment I prioritise. I bought the 2004 'Smile' just after it came out. I didn't like it much, as Brians voice sounded too old, naturally and understandably. I dont like all those scrappy bits and pieces of which there are so many I forget the exact names for some. Flowing isn't the same as patchy. The problem is whatever is served up as Smile we will never know exactly....
TheKenfig 5 months ago
@TheKenfig No vision. Brian seemed to like it, as did millions of other people so go be a snob.
Mozart1220 5 months ago
@Mozart1220 Are you a fuckin' optician ? ; you sound like you think you're one. Brian was sick. 'Millions' liked it eh ? Not bad for something that was never even released
TheKenfig 5 months ago
@TheKenfig First it's one of the most bootlegged titles EVER, and second, it was released. I have the CD. His new band is fantastic.
Mozart1220 5 months ago
@Mozart1220 Yeah, and all the bootlegs are inconsistent, claiming in their own way to be the 'definitive' version. It was NOT released in 67 to Brian's satisfaction THEN, and that's what the significant thing is to me. I bought the Wilson 2004 version when it was released and was very disappointed. I WILL get this supposed 'definitive' original version when itis released, but we can never know exactly what the original would have been if Brian had been satisfied & released it back then
TheKenfig 5 months ago

First of all, it would be THREE geniuses, as Paul McCartney was one of the voices you were hearing. And secondly, there was no chatting between geniuses with different styles, as Brian was talking to no one but the disc jockey. The Beatles' part of that conversation was pre-recorded from an 'open-ended' interview tape that the group supplied to radio stations so that any DJ (or guest of a DJ) could sound like they were personally connecting with The Fab Four.

Whoever edited this together with Wilson's involvement didn't notice that "No it's a dirty rumor, we don't" was McCartney and "We cut it ourselves" was Lennon.

crimsonrush 3 years ago
the beach boys didnt sell a hundred thousand singles a day by not being "accessible" and their surf rock was at LEAST as interesting as the early beatles stuff... AND more creative than the early beatles work... its only AFTER hearing pet sounds that they kicked it up and came out with sgt peppers... IF Brians influence is truly "harder to grasp" its only because it is deeper and therefore more serious art... the fact is that millions of screaming teen girls bought most of either bands albums
stumptacular 3 years ago 3
I think it's kind of stupid to attribute the creation of the Beatles creation of world changing albums like Revolver and Sgt. Pepper to Pet Sounds completely. I'd say that while that may have been an influence, the Beatles were heading in that direction anyway. The Beach Boys worshipped Rubber Soul, and they had meetings to try and come up with ideas for an album that would be just as good. More creative? I could argue that it was the Beatles that made the Beach Boys kick up there game.

Pepper. But early Beatles inspired Brian Wilson to make ASL, Today, SD, etc.
jmiklane 3 years ago 2
Now about those comments about which band was better (Beach Boys or Beatles)...I like The Beach Boys...but doesn't this arguement remind you of the 90s-early 2000s arguement about which was really better----N'sync or Backstreet Boys--?

Why are we all excited about 17 seconds about a barber or am I missing something? The clip is only 17 seconds long right?

You listen to things in context. People were trying to get some animosity or jealousy going between them and it just wasn't there - at least not on the part of Brian Wilson. It's interesting to actually hear BW instead of giving in to the BEACH BOYS vs. BEATLES thing the media wanted to create. That's why. And Mike Love initially didn't think they were a threat to BB popularity; then decided to just continue with surf music, but ended up in India with them in 1968.

I think that Wilson and the Lennon/McCartney thing could have been a brilliant venture. I love both groups dearly
