This song was a #1 hit by the Marvelettes(Motown) in 1963. Contrary to what Beatle fans may think, some songs actually belong to others. I didn't even know the Beatles had covered the song until I saw it on Youtube and I was around in their heyday.
Great version of this song. Karen really not looking well here. I hate to say this, but she was never that good of an up front solo singer; i"m not referring to her voice,of course, but her presence. She was much more charismatic when she was drumming or singing with others(Carol Burnett, Doug Strawn, Ella, and the like). She never got fully comfortable on her own and I believe she felt that she was able to hide behind her drum kit or blend in with more charismatic performers.
They were the "Saviors Of Pop Music" coming out of the turbulent 60's. With the 'Carpenter' name, came a genuine sincerity and innocence never found before in Pop music. And in December of 1974, Karen and Richard Carpenter were "On top of the world" after they recorded and released their #1 version of the tear provoking, "Please Mr. Postman."
I love the Carpenters version of this song. Much better than the original Marvelettes version. The Carpenters really pulled it up a notch with its perky and lively treatment of the song, and melodically it's superior too. And of course no one sings like Karen. Amazing unique voice!
Thank you very much for posting what appears to be a live performance video from "The Bruce Forsyth Show". Richard Carpenter was unable to perform for this show.
It's almost horrifying to see how thin Karen's upper arms were....
