Wow, this is amazing. Can you teach these animals any tricks, can they come to their name, could you take one out your back garden and it won't run away/it will come back? Are they sociable with their owners?

Sad ! Aren't those animals in the western desert? Anyway, I had a bird I dearly loved, he lost his leg, I made him better but when a heatwave came I woke up and he was dead. He was an aqua budgie and dearly loves me. But aren't you in America anyway? Here in Australia we have heatwaves uncommonly but we still have em.

@jerrydyer She was 6 years old. That's no spring chicken for a small rodent. I've heard of some living 10 years but you have to be extremely strict with their diet. She was a finicky eater too so it was difficult.

Lots of hay, not a lot of treats, a little fresh veggie/grass but not too much.

@etr89 Hay and more hay with a little corn and oats. You can use rotent protein block sparingly. Also fresh food gradually (apples, carrots, lettuce) but not to much as once (hard on them when they aren't used to it).

Good luck! I'm jealous. Where did you get him? They are not available around here any more. Also, I recommend when he is old enough that you get him neutered. Males are especially difficult during rut season.

@92jc2005 I got him at a reptile and exotic animal expo here, they have them once a month. One of our pet stores has them as well. How old does he have to be to get him neutered? I wanted to do this anyways, not sure if it will benefit him like it does a dog. He has just been so much fun! I think I am going to name him Scooby..I have a great dane...get it, scooby snack...just kidding, but scooby is cute, at least I thought so. Where are you from? Maybe you can get another one from here!

@mulder81605 What state do you live in? I'm guessing it is too far for me to drive. I think the window for neutering is September or so (it's very limited). Check with your vet. He really needs it for temperment reasons.

I only had mine since yesterday (may 9th 2010) first one I have owned ever. I was afraid of him last night, but I realized he was just trying to figure me out too. Today I went ahead and was going to see if he was going to bite, he just nippled me a little and stood on his hind legs. I guess it might just be some kind of affection...maybe like when they do the "kissing" thing, not sure. But he got out of his pen, I called yahoo to him and he came to me!!!!! I am in love already!!!!

They are awesome pets but you really have to work with them when you get them. They require ALOT, I can't stress that enough ALOT!! of quality time. They are very affectionate animals and once they get used to you then you could go along like normal. Mine always used to bark and make noise when I would come home. She was so happy to see me. She would occasionally sleep in the bed with me. You just gotta watch them. They are rodens and will chew on things if you let them.

i had a prairie dog for 15 years. they are the best pet. He got old and died in 2003. Which is the same year they banded them in the usa. kinda weird but he was old.
