not a superstrong one. wind speeds of perhaps a buck twenty but more than enough to throw them around like dolls. Looks like they just caught the side of the tornado but wernt actually in its path about 100 meters away
AWESOME FOOTAGE!!! Im a storm chaser and ive never been THAT close to a tornado! Mainly cuz most have been over F3's...and im not suicidal lol but again, AWESOME!!!
I am a professional storm spotter this is one of the best tornado videos I ever seen I would estimate winds around 150m.p.h. but very dangerous to be so close you can see the wind rapidly change direction as the tornado passes could have been sucked out the door or window while filming this I would advise not to try this again!!
IMO, this ranks very close to the top as one of the best tornado videos, and I've watched hundreds. There aren't a lot of videos, like this one, where the tornado is plowing through an urban area and being filmed at close range.
@ThetaE1966 Here is some original content...Adverse pressure gradients are essentially atmospheric sandpaper. Disrupting laminar flow (inducing turbulence) ahead of boundary layer separation does have fascinating implications. Imagine raindrops with evenly distributed surface indentations. This would undoubtedly result in increased horizontal droplet velocities as well as higher collision probabilities. Would this not also increase the frequency of localized polarity maxes in a t-storm?
The rain and wind at 1:26 IS inflow 100%. The rain and wind towards the end of the video was the rear flank downdraft, the tornado needs an enormous amout of engrgy to feed itself and the primary being an updraft, which at ground level in close proximaty to the funnel itself results as inflow. At 2:30 onwards the updraft/inflow you saw earlier in the video becomes the rear flank downdraft which is just cool air/excess waste thrown of the backside of a thunderstorm
@ranger1843 mmm yes you are overly pretentious in saying that, because as you know...being so educated and all, My word doesn't make me any less intelligent, or any less able to debate an issue with someone who (it seems) would attempt to discredit me by deeming that my use of a word I grew up using would damage my credibility.
Please send me the actual links to the papers you quoted in your email to me. I would like to look at more than just your excerpts from them. Thank You :)

Again great footage, but be careful!!!
europeans pilgrims what caliber people were theese describe yourself son and find the true savage mexicans are human you are mankind kind of man respect your creators
@niselat---ur ignorance is uncanny!!!!!! if u traced your family tree to when it started i can 1000% guarantee that neither one of them were of the Tribal Indian decent (because your so ignorant, they were here before Columbus) ....being that said your family was also once in thier shoes....our country was founded on "Illegal Immigrants" and your derogatory comments can go with you straight to hell...
@jeffsgirl2424 Just one word of correction...this country was NOT founded on "illegal immigrants".....because there were no laws regarding immigration. But there are now.
Nothing smart about this fellow and video. While the footage is spectacular, he's dammed lucky the tornado brushed him with it's weak upstream outer edge. But for a few hundred yards, he and his family would have been toast. The only explanation that occurs to me is simply that he had no clue what he was messing with.
@Jangle2007 You can clearly here him telling his family to go hide in the bathroom, which was the smartest move they could have made. I have yet to see apartments come with basements and it would have been suicide to try and out run it in a car.
The videographer is not Iron Man, he is stupid. He should have those kids taken away from him for endangering them like that. But what do you expect from that kind
@unnamedDbacksfan you shop at KMart? then you have seen how these illegal savages are. they bring their 37 kids in and let them run wild. they don't give a fuck what happens to them. they just make more. these people live in tarpaper huts and shit in ditches in Mexico. crossing the border does not make make them instantly civilized
@niselat --I work with the people that you describe. And while I wouldn't agree with your description--derogatory, I might add--they will eventually acclimate to their new country. Rather than being so disparaging, give them time. Many other immigrants were in similar straits when they first reached these shores. Peace.
@unnamedDbacksfan Hey bro, try not to get too riled up. This dude's a troll. There seems to be one in every damn You Tube chatroom anymore. I don't know what their motives are, but with so many of them out there, it seems to me like it's kind of an organized thing. And these trolls try to start fights on any subject, whether it be race, religion, sex, anything. But it's hard not to want to fight back, I know. Really, for the most part, people in this country get along.
WOW. please tell that man this is one of the best vids i have ever seen, but also that he is probably the stupidest guy ever, for not seeking shelter. All that tornado had to do was change course just a fraction and he could have lost his life. But im glad he is ok!
@Emmyzero123 I've been storm chasing for a couple of decades...I go to the midwest for about a month each spring to do so. I missed this one by one week. Anyhow, you said "he's just standing there like nothing's wrong..wtf??" It's not uncommon for some people to just become so spellbound when watching something like this that they've seen on t.v. but never experienced themselves. that they just become entranced and lose themselves in it. I'm sure it happens with other phenom besides naders. joel
@BlueTwisterFilms Which is the RFD. The strong downward air motion behind the updraft (i.e.tornado) is RFD. It is "filling in" the vacuum left by the tornado. I'm not making this up.
A region of dry air subsiding on the back side of, and wrapping around, a mesocyclone. It often is visible as a clear slot wrapping around the wall cloud. @Barderella i think i will ask my friend Mike Phelps to give me his opinion, since there seems to be a discrepancy on this. That way, we can find out from a real meteorologist :)
@Barderella Hey Ranger....my friend Mike (former TWCmeteorologist) clarified this issue for us so that we arent confusing people with conflicting information....
Michael Phelps: That thing was so close there is no question that was pure inflow. The winds that kick in at 3 min are RFD.
@ranger1843 i just watched it again and i think 1:26 is inflow, and RFD u can see at 2:30-3:00, followed by a rain band. I dunno, just looks like that the more i watch this. I use numerous other chase videos as examples as they discuss being in the RFD at some distance behind the storm itself.
@Barderella Ive been observing weather for a while and in laimens terms you are spot on the RFD does OFTEN NOT Always! occur behind the storm, it does sometimes occur around the twister itself however this will be the start of the end for the tornado and as far as i can tell this tornado was far from through as it passed by this very very lucky bystander!
@TheChazxxx Well thanks for backing me up on this one...educational degrees don't automatically make you right (Ranger...this means you). It is clear that at 1:26 it is INFLOW, as it is soooo close to the tornado. The winds going into a tornado of that size have a greater circumference around the main vortex. I have been in 2 tornadoes because of residence, not because of chasing...1967 Oak Lawn, IL EF-4 & 1990 Plainfield, IL EF-5. I'm older and i have been studying for many years.
@Barderella Lol Ranger! Im Not Sure Were you were getting the educational degree from because i dont have one. I was just observing what i saw and what i know and have experianced on many occasions i didnt mean to cause offence and im sure you are highly educated in the field. Just posting comments thats all. Sorry to hear about your residents getting damaged that must have been SHIT!! hope every one was ok!
@Barderella Sorry lol Im so tired and had a few glasses of wine!!!!! For some obscure reason i thought you were talking to me and calling me ranger, i know! LMAO.
@moosanova1 I hear you on that one! More studies I did on the damage path also indicate that the center of the tornado passed within only roughly 600 feet of these guys taking the video!
That's great footage! Definately small, EF1 or maybe 2, no cars were even so much as moved, but incredible shooting at the very edge of a small funnel. Video like this could be used to train chasers & others in what a tornado looks like when it is coming straight toward you, or mostly so. No to little movement right or left, appearing to stand still or increase in size, this could help save lives.
@ProChoiceJesus Actually, according to the National Weather Service, the tornado was an EF-5. And according to Google Maps, this tornado's close pass to the cameraman occured just seconds before it slammed headlong into the Charleston Square Apartments.
Awesome footage, although I would have lost my nerve and headed for the basement. NETOPOLOGY should send this on to The Weather Channel. I'm sure they would show it. Iron Man definitely had a lot of courage.
Yep, thought it was Joplin but that one in Joplin was much wider and really you could not "see" the funnel for what it was with all the rain that got wrapped in.
@Yarndt This is the Tuscaloosa tornado. There is another video of this same tornado taken by user Bamawxcom that shows that twin-forked tube wrapping around the main funnel at 3:01

ProChoiceJesus 5 months ago
@ProChoiceJesus Actually, according to the National Weather Service, the tornado was an EF-5. And according to Google Maps, this tornado's close pass to the cameraman occured just seconds before it slammed headlong into the Charleston Square Apartments.

Would you believe that was a SMALL tornado - maybe an F1 ?!

I'm guessing this is Tuscaloosa. I notice there is a lot of horizontal tubes with this vid...same with Tuscaloosa.
Yarndt 7 months ago
@Yarndt This is the Tuscaloosa tornado. There is another video of this same tornado taken by user Bamawxcom that shows that twin-forked tube wrapping around the main funnel at 3:01
