I'm blown away. Absolutely stunning, both the composition and performance. What is most extraordinary about Hamelin is not only does he play the notes, he understands the composition and fills it with life.
Way to blow me away. Absolutely stunning, both the composition and performance. What is most extraordinary about Hamelin is not only does he play the notes, he understands the composition and fills it with life.
what a performance! - like the music it defies any convention, rule, constraint, or whatever. Its almost like saying to Rubenstein - the Brazilian equivalent of: follow me here! I love the Villa Lobos orchestral piece Uripuru conducted only by L. Stokowsky - it takes virtuosity to get these wild things out!
If I didn't know the music and watch to a live performance of this piece, I would think, at the end, that he is angry and the piano is being punished, unjustly.
In French one would say 'coup de poing'. Good to see him follow the score so closely. I guess you wouldn't have to really punch it but anything with a closed fist would work haha.
@kastlesucks that's exactly what I thought... that's one of the reasons why Rudepoema is just soo cool. Who ever thought you could be funky (as you say) on the piano?!?!
You have a point Delfin. There is no reason why they can't play Villa-Lobos instead of Beethoven. One reason may be that the only Beethoven piece that comes close (but not really) is the Hammerklavier. But Villa-Lobos has easier pieces (like the said a lendo do cabaclo). I think Beethoven has some good pieces, he also has some bad ones but he does not suck. There are also many other composes they should play instead of Beethoven. BTW, it is not wise to insult famous composers on YT, I would know
By the time I finished watching this video, I seriously thought I could just go to the piano and play this piece in one go. It's amazing how easy Hamelin makes his pieces look!
Lol I don't think so. I remember I used to dislike Mozart, Beethoven and Bach for their pieces, but I soon appreciated that these composers were born many, MANY years before Villa-Lobos, therefore weren't as creative as people like Villa-Lobos. Mozart, Beethoven etc. 'started off' the piano, and without them, there wouldn't be a Villa-Lobos or even a Chopin for that matter. It's a bit like simple computers started the iPod and Windows Vista.
In his autobiography Rubenstein is said to have a low opinion of the piece and even regretted the fact it was published originally with his as co-composer/inspiration. He played it though
OK so it's not "easy"or"pleasant"to listen to. I'll admit it's a rather individual language, but exciting for those who prefer somethg other than "easy".Climbing Himalayas, rounding Cape Horn, parachuting, white-water rafting....Not particularly "easy", but rewarding..(only if you like it,of course!)
supervirtuosic performance .. even though the music is not well-known it is still someone's genius on paper and fiendishly difficult for any pianist. how hamelin accomplishes such technique is a real mystery ... superb performance in my opinion .. the music is very modern and percussive but unique and still a piece of the beautifully immense piano repertoire ...
BORING? you're crazy, it's dirty stinky nasty gorgeous beautiful perverse -- SAVAGE, POETIC -- destructive. perhaps the sound could be a little better in this video -- on disc (i have both of His recorded performances PLUS a couple pirated live-concert versions) it fares better. I WANT THIS ON DVD!
Rudepoema (a Rude poem) is probably the most daring piano piece composed in the americas. Just a genius (with a very independent and provocative personality) like Villa Lobos would dare to compose something that is very personal and strong and of course, light years from being a boring piece. Sure its a difficult piece to understand, but its much easyer if you compare with most of the XX century repertoire.
This must be listen along his "Prole do Bebe number 2"
Stravinsky dedicated his piano version of Petrushka to Rubinstein, and he premiered it too. One of the most frightening pieces ever written for the piano with musical value (!!)
Amen. Count yourself among the fortunate to know this amazing work; twice blessed to hear Hamelin play it; thrice blessed to actually SEE it. Thank you!
wow he's a genius playing a genius work wow

Considering the end of the piece we could say we just watched Marc-Andre "The Hummer" Hamelin.

Stunning, staggering performance of this work! But as far as the music is concerned I think less is more and more is less.

A brilliant performance, although it's interesting to see (and hear) that this more than excellent pianist plays wrong notes in public, too...

Villa-Lobos wrote in the score, in that final chord. ~"coup poing " ( in french ). The score was published in France first.
In English would be "coup fist" , or something like that

i appreciate it and play extremely hard pieces, i was just commenting that beautiful music is'nt neccesarily virtuosic
afertyus1000 3 years ago
Good. So, Villa Lobos just made a wonderfull job of describing where we are getting at the way things are going - and if we don't change for better.
Ok. Beautiful.

Perhaps the greatest solo work Villa Lobos wrote for the piano. One of my all time favourites. Many thanks for this.

Hmmmmmm... Ultra Virtuosistic... Sufficient for me to love a piece =P
But I prefer other compositions by Villa-Lobos, like the Bachianas Brasileiras... Shit, the 4th Bachiana is a genius's thing !

Yes, Villa-Lobos dedicated the piece to Rubinstein, who premiered it.
