@removesstains Do it in the Spring. Its also helpful to do it in the fall but spring is the most imporant time. If your soil is compact you'll want to do it more often to loosen it up. You can rent the machines. I bought kit for my tiller that converts it into a coring aerator (replaces the tines with coreing aerator plugs).
