crappy video unless you are doing a French's mustard commercial. Bob McChesney's playing is mindblowing. Pushing what was once felt impossible on trombone beyond all comprehensible limits.
well trust me "pops", you can still use all the theory in the world in doodling, but if you slow it all down its just very awesome patterns that he's made his own. I'm not downing his playing, just observing, so don't belittle me.
apologies, didn't mean to insult you. in fact, its likely im more a kid than yourself, that just happens to be an expression i use all too frequently. Anyway, what I mean by this is that Bob's musical knowledge is immense, I know because I take lessons with him on a regular basis (blows my mind every time). And doodle tonguing, while it is not theory in itself, is a tool for articulating whatever expression the player might desire. Think of it as a fine tipped paintbrush, as opposed to a roller.
no problemt man, I'm envious you get to study with Bob, my previous mentor Ernie Carlson always spoke highly of him. I understand he's gotta have theory out his ears to play what he plays, but I was proving a different point I suppose.
I'm currently studying with Julian Priester, not a doodler but still a master! all the best man

BOb is a really good trombone player but compared to Elliot Mason he sounds like a good high school player .Elliot Masons freaky harmonics and intervalic lines are the most hard to play lines on the planet. If you cant hear Elliots genius its because your ears arnt developed enough to comprehend the harmonic advancement and revolutionary technique that Elliot has achieved.
both very good players, but you cant say neither is the best. Bob can do things Wycliiffe cant do and vise versa. But to say that either one is the best is a completley ludicris and childish argument.
First of all both are great players. I can say who I think is the greatest due to my taste in musicians. My opinion is that Wycliffe is the greatest. What is ludicrous and infantile is your attempt to censor my opinion. Hands down in "my opinion" Wycliffe is one of the most innovative and creative instrumentalist alive. Right now he is the best Trombone player I have heard. Trust me being a trombone player myself, I have heard a lot of them.
you just requoted me, thats exactly what I said. Both are great players, both are among the best in the world. but niether your opinion or my opinion can be considered fact. Even if Wycliffe is your favorite player, that doesnt mean he can be conisdered the best, even though Bob is one of my faves, that doesnt mean I can say hes the best. It all comes down to opinion and what you prefer. Thats all I was really trying to say.
trust me, Bob has both incredible technical skill, as well as unreal musical prowess. He plays the trombone better than a lot of pianists play their instruments. And this video doesn't do him justice at all, I have had the immense pleasure of taking lessons with this giant, and I must say, the man can play thousands of times faster than this, and usually has a distinctly golden tone. And for being a goofy California trombonist, he's got an exceptional amount of soul.
pretty good. a little boring and a bit mechanical. compared to e.m in new york he is average. but then again no one that has ever lived has been so techniquely gifted or even close to harmonicaly as advanced as EM.
Amazing! My dad went to College with Bob at fredonia state. Funny, because both me and my brother are musician's and I'm a jazz Saxophone player. Bob is an amazing clinician, teacher, and person.
He's fantastic! He's a little bit like Eje Thelin, the swedish tromboneplayer who also was playing very fast like this or even faster. Sorry there aren't any videos with Eje playing, I think? Bob McChesney is for jazz music what Christian Lindberg is for the classcal music when it comes to trombone-playing.
look i wasnt insulting him i admire has jazz but its a just a diffrent type of trombone style. he can kick my ass any day on the trombone ill say that.

i saw this man live hes alrite but hes just doesnt have the real trobone tone. Dont get me wrong he has a voice on that trombone but his tone just doesnt have that trombone quality to it.
Boldcup. Transcribe the solo that Bob plays, note for note, then play it back along with the video. Practice until you can do it perfectly. When you are done, get back to me.
Not that I agree with him, but you didn't understand his comment. It had nothing to do with technical aspect. Anyone who says they're better technically than McChesney is stupid, because there is no better, only equal. What he was saying is that he does not like McChesney's tone. I don't overly like his tone myself, I prefer one more like Eubanks or Gordon.
It's not just flashy because he has a destination. You seem to think he's playing fast for fast's sake, which isn't the case at all. Just keep listening, and if you're still bored, stop listening to this style instead forcing it down your throat and killing it for the rest of us.

sorry but this is just so boring - flashy technique. All on the same level = there is nothing to get excited by musically unless you thrive on technique alone. Can he play above mp? I cant play anything near as good but from a musical point of view why do you think that is good? Trombone is about the sound not about lots of notes - the less said the better i think.
Go to his site and listen to the clip (I think it's called "Newsclips" or something like that) on the first page. This is far, far less than what he can do, that clip has some good ballady type stuff in it, maybe you'll like that.
Well it's a jazz solo, not bungee jumping. He is playing MF and any louder would be obnoxious for this style of jazz. Bob is a superb lagato player. I find loud and harsh boring with a headache. I have heard the "less is better" argument and it usually comes form those that don't have the facility just demonstrated. Less is good for some things but certainly not always better. What is good from a musical point of view is not cut and dry.
in some ways i agree with you, trombone is a lot about sound, and not the amount of notes you play, but which notes you play, and how you play them. but bob mcchesney is still great, i love his work.
Bob McChesney is light years beyond a good high school player -- what an ignorant comment. But Elliot Mason IS amazing.

trust me kid, bob's got theory. he only doodles because he's got so much to say, and so little time; so he plays it all really fast.

They are both amazing players. None is better then the other. They play different styles. You can't compare.

@jazztrbn77 I agree.

Guess what -- there are things Bob can do that Elliot can't. Comparing the two is unfair to BOTH.
The only thing unusual about what Elliot plays is that it's not usually heard on trombone.
