Who coulld ever believe that such grand powerful sounds came from the mind of a shy humble man whose appearance was that of a farmer whose clothes never looked right on him!
Overwhelming reading by Karajan. I have versions from other great brucknerites: Walter, Jochum, Celibidache, Barenboim. As good as they are, none comes close to this one: the cumulative thrust, the sheer power, the balance between orchestra and choir in full blast or in the sottovoce and poliphonic passages. Truly magnificent!
there might be something wrong about this recording. karajan usually takes the 1st and last movement slower than this. Is it really karajan, the conductor here? His recording with wiener philharmoniker from 80s for example, 1st movement is 7 minutes long!
Do I hear voices in the backround. I do.

The orchestra is too loud...they should accompany the voices, not the other way around

I agree completely. 'Never mind the music, just listen to my orchestra!'

coming back, I remember my conductor referring to this one as "the screamer" LOL

Kegel, Rögner and Jochum all recorded better, less bombastic, more transparent versions.

I think the illustration has something wrong. The background should be in Egypt where the Jesus family fled. This one looks like Europe.

@Pitonznz Soloists were soprano Janet Perry, alto Helga Müller-Molinari, tenor Gösta Winbergh (unfortunately passed away in 2002) and bass Alexander Malta.

i think that if you listen to Celibidache conducting Bruckner you can hear voices much better

The Conductor indicated on the Deutsche Grammophone CD is Karajan,The year of edition is 1985(Polydor intl GmbH).
The time is less than 7'10" for 1st movement and 7'13"for the last movement because the software to upload has cutted the saving before the ends.
