  • why are people so ready to ban things and give up their rights,i actually thought this was a joke at first.

  • @ptsmmrs Should've gone with your first instinct. It is satirical.

  • @klfly i kind of figured so but is it true that there really are people in california wanting to ban divorce?

  • Stone your unruly children, this is in the Bible also

  • Brilliant idea!

  • great, no divorce for heterosexual marriage..................great idea, genius.protect our family values.......NO DIVORCE.........

  • Your clearly not seeing the big picture or you wrote that comment to piss people off. This guy is making a joke by promoting this act. He's not seriously thinking he can ban divorce, he just wants attention from the media. This thing probably wont make it to the ballott, if it does, it will not pass. Some of Marcotte's comments are ludicrous.

  • I want to enlist my editing services in this wonderful campaign to protect marriage from evil heterosexuals who would try to get out of their vows! You want to own marriage, straights? Then own it, you already used the constitution to take rights from Californians. Now take the rights from that slut next door! How dare she divorce when YOU can't? Ban divorce! Or else they'll turn over Prop 8 as they laugh their asses off at your hypocrisy.

  • god i hate filthy breeders

  • Uktrayf, you can call the males "balloon dads"

  • I think this would have been better if there was no audience. it's hard to hear what he is saying.

  • Ban Divorce

Make it ok to beat your wife.

    Its all in the Bible.

Its also actually ok to sacrifice animals to God. Read Deuteronomy.

  • couldn't agree more

  • Fantastic idea!

  • Genius idea. Go get the homophobic sons a bitches.

  • HAHA ! Your friend got a segment on The Young Turks today! Excellent!

  • Comment removed

  • Stop divorces, ban marriage.

  • @ CrowColdblade

    Damn good idea.

  • ha ha. let's not stop there! how about just banning woman/man interaction! stop it at where it begins!

  • Make it illegal for Penis Vaginal Sex! LOL Awesome:)

  • Great video. I only wish people would think before opening their mouths (or typing frantically in this case). Oh well, some people will never get it.

  • threw up a little in my mouth watching this guy. hard to tell if he was being serious and joking or just being plain serious, but either way it sucked. i'm fine with divorce being illegal as long as you can throw the unwanted spouse in a pit of no return and marry again...

  • are you stupid? it's obvious that he is being sarcastic.

  • Dear narrow minded simpletons,

Your religion, whatever it may be, does NOT own the copyrights to marriage, divorce or family. If you, your family and community have strong feelings on marriage then follow your principles. I have no problem with that.

That said, I have a huge problem with the morality police trying to make legal policy in this country. Last I checked the US has not only freedom of religion but a separation of church and state.

Keep your morals to yourself. Nuff said.

  • Personally, I think we should make satirical protest illegal.

  • Oh, poor Mark Twain.

  • @saintdude1

What are all of our laws based on, if not morality? If we receive our rights from the government, then the government can take them away at any time for any reason.

"The Declaration of Independence dogmatically bases all rights on the fact that God created all men equal; and it is right; for if they were not created equal, they were certainly evolved unequal. There is no basis for democracy except in a dogma about the divine origin of man." G.K. Chesterton

  • Bittersweet if this went through. Very cool.

My grandparents were atheists, married till death parted them after 60 years of matrimony. My wife and I are atheists, happily together for 13 years now. Mom and dad weren't atheists, though, and they divorced when I was 2. I know atheism doesn't guarantee happiness, and religion doesn't guarantee sadness, but the examples in my life seem awfully one-sided. Just sayin'.

  • Ironically - the Google ad was flashing "need a divorce?" as this was playing. Priceless.

  • This is as dumb as making wife beating legal.

  • And perhaps as dumb as making gay marriage illegal?

  • I'm sorry. We're working on one issue at a time. Re-legalizing spousal-directed physical violence - clearly sanctioned in the Bible - will have to wait for another day.

  • We also tend to trow possible husbands in jail on mass, there might be place for a goverment sanctioned silver coin credit to rapist so they can pay out the parents and marry their future wife.

Only if shes a virgin of cause.

If she had been married, we should stone both.

  • Where were you?

  • At Luna's Cafe where I do a weekly comedy show on Wednesdays in Sacramento, CA.

It's a slow night, I think because of Obama's health care speech.

  • This is fucking brilliant.

  • Thanks. John's pretty great.

  • This reminds me of "Boomsday" by Christopher Buckley...

  • lol, prop 8 satire.

  • Good point, lol

  • Wow! It was exciting to find you in my sub box on a Friday. Was this this midweek version of the Atheist Church? :-) We really should have a Wednesday night service, ya know....

Watching this, I couldn't wait to see the comments and sure 'nuf...people are stupid. The site comments are equally hilarious.

  • wish I could sign it!

  • My parents are divorcing and my everyone has never been happier!

  • Yeah? You sound just like those children of gay couples who point out that they're perfectly well adjusted and successful and happy.

Who are we to believe? Someone who has experienced the phenomenon in question first hand or someone who has misunderstood a bad summary of some discredited and debunked 40-year old research and is guided by a singular passage in their preferred religious text? ;)

  • Fuck no! Divorce is always for the benefit of all parties! Vote NO against this asshole!

  • You guys do realize that this is a joke... right?

  • that guy is a moron... the us is an atheist nation... and free of religion country

  • Your a moron to think the US ISN'T a christian nation. All of these fundies would be glad to disagree with you. I wish this WAS an atheist nation.

  • It is historically, Benjamin Franklin was quoted as saying "Lighthouses are more useful than churches"

  • And I agree with the man, but the fact of the matter is the Government and all important jobs are run by Christians! When the leaders running the country aren't athist and when the majority of the population aren't atheist then this isn't (as much as I wish it was) and athiest country

  • fair enough

  • Yeah the country is run by idiots who don't know anything, except for how to look good and listen to other people. The real work is done by scientists. Fuck atheists and christians, let's just go with scientists.

  • umm, no

  • The republic (that is the american republic, not the republican party) was originally intended to be secular. It is only the people who are religious.

  • A nation is defined by it's people, the government IS a republic and therefore secular, but the government does not reflect the people.

  • How can you state that the nation IS the people when the only thing that affiliates them with each other is that they were born within the same REPUBLIC. It is the republic that is the nation. When people start to lose sight of that, they lose the republic and end up sliding back into the abyss that the founders sought to keep America out of.

  • I suppose your right.

  • "Security! Taze him!" LOLOL!!

  • Maybe I can do something similar here in Florida. I'd go a bit further and make the law retroactive and require divorcees to move back in together or else move into a prison cell together.

  • As a political protest, it's pretty funny, especially directed at Christians.

  • Penn & Teller should do an episode of BULLSHIT! about marriage and have John appear.

  • Didn't they already do one? Family Values or something like that.

  • They did do one about Traditional Family Values but they never discussed divorce. Besides, this is P&T we're talking about, most of that show was about fucking.

  • What these Catholics wont tell you is that they have their own form of divorce within the Church called Annulment. A marriage is considered null and void pending payment to the church and approval of the Diocese. If confronted with this, Catholics will say that if a marriage is Annulled, the marriage never existed.

I will sit back and watch this blow up in their faces. Denying gays marriage is one thing. Denying heterosexuals their rights is quite another.

  • Remember when you got married, when you and your significant other both said "In sickness and in health, TILL DEATH do us part". By choosing to divorce and terminate the contract of your marriage, you've effectively LIED to eachother and the community.

As long as divorce is legal (and as long as 50 percent of marriages in the US end in divorce), the vows of marriage mean nothing.

RESTORE THE POWER AND PURPOSE OF MARRIAGE, MAKE DIVORCE ILLEGAL!

  • Please tell my you don't agree with this klfly. I hope this was posted in sarcasm. Everyone has the right to choose to be married or choose to be divorced. For example if a husband beats his wife she should not be forced to stay married to him.

It would be absolutely ludicrous if this was passed!

This is a total violation of freedoms!

  • I think its a political protest. The point is that it is ridiculous to impose such things on people just because some people think it is immoral. The point is also that there is actually biblical justification for outlawing divorce, where there is no where near the justification for outlawing gay marriage.

  • Clearly not. Voters in 37 states have confirmed that everyone does not have this right - and the reasoning has consistently been traditional marriage, traditional values, and protection of children. This endeavor simply follows in their footsteps, and this being America, majority rules.

  • these are the people who rattle on about their freedoms being violated by 'obamacare'!!!

    fucking hypocrits

  • haha, watch this get passed!

  • It better get passed, otherwise there are hella hypocrites in this state.

  • i wonder what would happen though, would people start moving out of state to get divorced just to protest?

  • If that means less rednecks then I really hope it passes.

  • If they really want to divorce, they can simply move to one of the states that permits dissolution of marriage. They simply have to live there 30-365 days, depending on the state, then file for divorce. Every married couple is thus treated equally under the law, so it's a non-issue, right?

  • except there would be incurred moving costs. Not everyone can just pick up and move away for a year. With the current economy you can't expect to be able to work for a year somewhere else.

  • I'm referencing the claims that gay people can marry people of the opposite sex so that everyone is treated equally under the law.

  • "Amendment 1 - Freedom of Religion and Speech

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

The key phrase being "respecting an establishment of religion," and to those who are idiots, that means adhering or allowing to to be a part of government.

  • They're not being forced to live together or to be happily married. If they wish to live apart, this Act would not prevent it. I'm just protecting my right to not have to see their disgusting, repulsive and non-traditional separation in public. We shouldn't be forced to witness this sort of lewd behavior.

  • Oh yes, but they would still be legally married. "...and the pursuit of happiness." Wouldn't forcing someone to be legally obligated to another that they have no love for go against that right? Whether they're away from each other or not, they can never be married again, they can never have non-bastard children. The moral issues of the church are to be separate from the state. Read the constitution man.

  • First off.. This video is a parody of the whole "protect marriage by banning gay marriage" bullcrap.

Secondly... I love your blatant contradiction/hypocrisy where you say to keep separation of church and state, yet in the very line before it you bemoan bastard children. What's wrong with bastard children? Kids are born out of wedlock all the time. It's religion that started that stigma.

  • I know it's a parody, but that doesn't mean that discussion cannot be made between people on the subject. Now let me tell you something my fine-feathered friend; the purpose a line like that is to create a double-edged sword for someone. You can't even hope to sway a persons opinion by changing it entirely at once. There is an art to arguing that you need to learn, so please don't talk to me again about bullshit until you've learned a little bit.

  • You don't have a Constitutional right to love the person you marry. Remember that the Pro-8 supporters argued that gays can just marry someone of the opposite sex and they choose not to. Well divorce is definitely a choice and is in no way Constitutionally protected.

  • Not to put too fine a point on it, but if they wish to pursue happiness, they can take up a lovely hobby. Or pick up a lover on the side, as is common in the "traditional marriage" of Italy.

  • Yes, because polygamy is definitely legal in America. I'm done talking to you, you're too stupid.

Oh and Keith, thanks for the discussion.

  • You appear to be the only person here who hasn't caught on that I'm simply repurposing the exact same arguments used against marriage for same-sex couples - exactly in the spirit of klfly's project. They're sufficiently inane that you can actually target them against ANY group. You could even hire signature gatherers to stand in church parking lots and grocery stores to misrepresent the bill!

  • That is my favorite part. There WILL be signature gathers in Church parking lots, outside of WalMart etc. and I will be there with my camera. :D

  • Oh, I get it, you're a troll. Have fun being a dick and making no progress in any discussion you're ever a part of. Bye.

  • How is quoting (verbatim) the arguments used against marriage for same-sex couples trolling? Even NOM has said that they're tackling one issue at a time when people ask about divorce. So our host here is simply calling them out on their hypocrisy (since no sane person will sign), as am I.

  • Ha ha. That's great. Turn their "Hey I don't care what you do in public, I just don't want to have to see it." line back in their face. :D

  • We already know that.

  • Yes, all those Roman Catholics and Mormons who dropped BIG BUCKS to pass Prop 8 should donate to and vote for this.

otherwise they are hypocrites lying to God, society, and themselves

  • This is awesome!
