  • so what does the weld threshold number mean?

  • @mballew32 the bigger the number is, the larger the distance can be between verts that are pulled together by the weld tool - test it with 2 far apart verts ;)

  • I've heard it is so difficult that a lot of people study it in the college to be able to handle it. Is it true?

  • @Coga19000 yep there are many courses all over the world on CG art. Im actually doing a degree myself :D

  • @Eddievedda1 No, I'm not talking about graphics design. I'm talking about the program itself.

  • subtitles plzz ...

  • Yeah, i figured it out, well except the smoth and highlights, but to get the lines I had to click on view and click on real+edges

  • Um the f4 doesn't bring up all the the lines for me can some help me out

  • @youngday713 you using version 2012? they have changed the viewports in that one. may be new shortcuts. ill know in a month when i get up.

make sure you have smooth and highlights selected in your viewport and that you have clicked into the viewport that you want to show the lines on so its highlighted when you press f4 :)

  • To make welding easy Use the Hot key or a Shortcut for weld : Shift+Ctrl+W

  • I just can't understand your accent! >:(

  • Thank you SO MUCH for these tutorials!!

  • I'm learning this program just for fun. These tutorials are very helpful. Your morningstar was the first thing I created. (VERY exciting=) ) I just wanted to advice a thing, in my second attempt I chose six triangles on the sphere to make a "6gen" and extruded that. You can get a more symmetric and nice looking needle.

  • this is a long shot but if someone could break down for me how i can import materials into 3d studio max i'd really appreciate it.

  • i`ve a problem with placing viewport backgrounds..:(...and i can`t solve it..i searched the net but looks like other people encountered this issue too...so when i place the backgrounds(top side front)...and course ,checked the right boxes, when i try to zoom in/out in a viewport and then do the same thing in other viewport ,it changes the backgrounds size (it resizes it), to the previously selected background`s size...so i can't solve it and it's really confusing:(

  • Compuund Object/scaretle Maximum 2 Minutes

  • have trouble welding :( doesn't do anything at all when i put the weld to 15 and click ok (with vertices selecting)

  • @Ipodtouchmaniac100 Try a bigger margin - like a 500 weld thresh-hold. :) Good luck.

  • How did you get your facets triangle?

  • @3Target33 use a geosphere and not a regular sphere ;)

  • @Eddievedda1 Thanks.

  • nice pls take notice that if you select just 4 spike holes in every direction you can use the new loop function. That way you wont need to select every single spike you need. Hope that helps

  • Is this tutorial good for 2010?

  • @saquist Yea i think everything used here is the same in 2010

  • eh guys answer for rotating by just mouse is Alt + middle mouse

  • Hello, I was just wondering, how to make the X, Y, Z mover yellow again. I am using the 2010 version. It has turned gray when I try to move objects around or even manipulate them, how do I turn it back to yellow?

  • @lucassniper Hi, press X, or space bar or just hover your mouse over the gizmo. Any of these work?

  • @SecondSphere Yes, pressing X did work. :)

  • should use the symmetry modifier to save time.

  • I like more Milkshape. It more easy. ;-)

  • That welding took me so long :/

  • thanks man!!

  • i know this sounds stupid, but i have just started using 3DS Max 10, how do i rotate in perspective view with using just the mouse? lol

  • @sparda2005 Hi. Selct your perspective view making it active (click in it) now at the very bottom right of your screen there are some small buttons. One of them is "Rotate viewport" select this then you will be given a circle overlayed in your view. Click anywhere inside the circle and drag around to rotate. :) Good luck.

  • @Eddievedda1 thank you very much! much easier doing it this way! :)

  • @Eddievedda1 can't find it =(

  • @sisisisi1111 Find what, sorry?

  • A faster way of making the spikes instead of using the verteces is by using the option collapse after you extruded the triangles, might be only in newer versions, not sure.

  • @AnonymousSMIKS Yea that works too =D. Just the weld tool is probably more useful and more worthwhile for begginers to learn. ;)

  • WOAH WOAH WOAH! Way to fast! Slow down a bit! And speak more clearly.

  • thanx man helped a lot :D

  • 1 question howd u make it so on the sphere they are triangles. mine are squares...

  • @sharpndagger Create a "geosphere" and not a regular sphere :)

  • Thank you sir, really helpfull

  • I'm very scared of edges..

  • @ssj451 You'll learn to love them :P

  • weld dont works, i have 3d max 10 in win 7, i hold control when i select the 3 vertex, but weld dont work even if i put 10,000 as u say before, any idea whats wrong? i need help plz.

  • lol i auto response this bc can help sum 1,, weld work when u set value equal or uper than the value u used to extrude (maybe its obvious for expert but im noob so is new for me), for example i use like 20 for extude so 20 for weld at less works to me XD.

  • @Notus3D Glad you fixed it Notus ;) Good luck.

  • @Notus3D dude you are a LEGEND!!! im like "why the F isnt this working for me!"

  • @Notus3D Not sure whats up there. If you post a video of your problem you could ask folks to help out, showing spesifics.

  • how the heck do i get 3d max????

  • @Starwarsclone57 Off of a certafied autodesk retailer. If you are in education you can get it for a massive discount if you search around a bit for a good deal. ;)

  • @Starwarsclone57

    usenet

  • where is the "Face" thing i dont got it

  • The face subobject level is on the right of the window, you have a handful of buttons when you convert into an editable poly. Vertex, Face, Edge and Border. They are small and red. You select the face button to enter that subobject level and work with it ;)

  • I cant see smooth-en highlights when I right click it...why..

I'm using 3d max 2010 by the way

  • You see the other types of view like wireframe and faceted?

Erm try going into the display tab on the right and changeing it from there.

I dont have any experiance with 2010 sorry

    :(

    Good luck

  • @Eddievedda1 a heey ....when I press 4 nothing happens..I'm using 2010 by the way

  • Alt and f4? Cntrl and F4?

what are you trying to do with the 4 key mate?

  • is it compatible with unity

  • Im guessing thats a OS?

Id be 99% sure its not. Max version 9 hates Vista, mac and im pretty sure windows 7 too. You have to run it as XP system (i forget what the technical term is).

Im actually buying a copy of xp pro to run max 2010 on when i get it/ can afford it.

    Cheers

    Eddie

  • no its a game engine

  • Oh right, then yea - you can save or export max files into loads of different formats. Pretty certain it would be compatible with your engine.

  • thanks..you help a lot

  • I have a few questions :D how do i select like a whole row of vertices, like the top of a cylinder the round edge part, how do i select the whole edge at one time? and is there a way to customize the skin, i mean, yours is like a grey skin, so is mine, o want to make mine white, like i see in some other videos.

    -Thanks!

  • You can either drag a selection box around them, default selection box is a rectangle, but you can change it to lasso and other things too. Or you can select one edge and use the "Loop" "Ring" "Grow" and "Shrink" options in the side editable poly tab. It would take a while to explain them here, but play with them a bit - they are quite self explanatory. ;)

In the top bar, go to customize, customize user interface. You can change all the colours. Good luck

  • Maybe the scatter tool would have been better for this job but thats just me. Good vid anyway

  • i can't understand a thing how do you select globe between 2:10 and 2:14??

  • You've created the geosphere and between 2:10 and 2:14 you are pressing F4 on the keyboard with each viewport selected in turn to show the edges of the object in wireframe.

  • u made a mistake

  • =O Where?

  • on the weld part u did not tell as to press ctrl

    pplz dont understand like this

    look at macho2u2000

he is cunfused and im sure that he is mad ^.^ lol

its not a big mistake im just want youre videos to be the best to make it easy to understand and sorry 4my english

  • Thanks for pointing it out, added a comment box to clarify ;)

  • np at all and sorry for annoying u

  • how do you move scale and rotate? im use to maya and that works very natural, but now with max i have that stupid selection box i have to click on to do any rotating or moving.

its really annoying and feels very resticting to me.

  • Hi, at the top of your screen, about half way along the tools panel, you have the Move tool, Select and Uniform scale tool, and rotate tool - for moving, scaling and rotation, respectively. With your object(or subobject selection you wish to manipulate) selected, click on one of these tools and then use the gizmo that appears to modify your selection.

Good luck, i hope you come to love 3dsmax in time ;)

  • i am the 9999th viewer!

  • WHEN I PUT WELD IT DOESNT WELD HELP

  • Change the weld threshold value to a larger number, (10,000 if all else fails) then try. Make sure you are holding control and clicking more than one vert before you click the weld button too. Hope you fix it ;)

    Good luck

  • hello it's really handy

pls answer as soon as u getthis im using 2009 3ds max n when i try to open a file that was made on 2010 it just doesnt open can u tell me how i can figure this out ? thx

  • Yea, max is not forwards compatable, which basically means you wont be able to open files created or saved on newer versions. The way to get around this is in 2010, to export the file (File>Export) as a Wavefront object (.obj). Then in 2009 you can open max and select File>Import, and import in your obj document. Its a bit of a pain, but not too much hassle. Good luck =D

  • thank u for getting me back quickly

aww! how stupid i was anyway thanks it really helped me :)

  • You welcome=)

not at all mate, its quite a common problem. Good luck with your projects in the future.

  • hey i just got 2010 and i was bored so i made this ummm but my axis is gone O.o do you know how i can get my xyz to show up again cause its really hard to work iwth th eprogram now xD lol

  • omg i hear only 4, not f4...ah 10x ...good tutorials dude ... (;

  • Sry for my question... but on 2:11 what button we must to press from the keyboard to view the edges..?

  • F4 to view edges ;)

    good luck.

  • i have cool tuts on 3d s max too chekc em out

    very cool tut here though

  • You kept saying vertexes instead of vertices :d

  • The end of the world, right?

  • yep, comment was tongue in cheek anyway, hense the :d.

  • Ah, 'kay.

  • beveling works instead

  • Try increasing the target weld threshhold until it effects the selected verts.

    ; )

  • ok ty

  • weld doesnt do anything

  • how you rotate without right click and rotate?

    :D

  • Rotate the object, use the rotate tool, next to the move tool at the top.

To rotate the screen (only really rotate the perspective view ;) ) use the free rotate tool in the bottom right of your screen. Next to pan camera, center view to object buttons.

    Good luck

  • Ive followed this tut, i know how to make things, its just im used to Maya, this was a great tutorial for getting used to the crazy interface xD. When i first ran Max, if i did sometinhg wrong i'd just restart it rofl xD

  • thankyou i only got this program yesterday 3ds max 2010 and your tutorial has got me started very vell i understand a little more about the app now i have a long way to go but thanks to you im moving in the right direction THANKYOU

  • Great tutorial except I noticed that it's much more faster just to scale those chosen extruded parts to 0 when they are still active. No need for choosing vertexes one by one. Keep up the good work!

  • Anyone knows how to change the "selects Wireframes" in Maya to the ones in 3DsM?

You know, in Maya there are as default green wireframes appearing on the object, but in 3DsM its much cooler.

  • Never really tried, try checking in preferences, WIndows -> Settings/Preferences.

  • Great tutorial. But Im just wondering what Im doing wrong when Welding the spikes. Im holding Ctrl selection all three vertexes pressing the weld control box, entering 15 then pressing ok. but nothing happens?

  • Your mace is probably a larger scale. Enter a value like 200 in the control box, that will get them ;)

    Good luck.

  • never mind lol

  • =P Guess you discovers it was "geosphere" rather than "Sphere" ;)

    Good luck.

  • hey i was wondering how do you make the wireframes triangles?

  • nice work, im kinda new to all this, i have after effects, pftrack, and 3ds max...and i cant figure out how to render an object in 3ds max and attach it to a viewable video that i prerecorded. i tracked the vid in pftrack and scripted it to 3ds max and i can put object in the tracking data but for the life of me i can't figure how to render it all as a viewable .avi or .wmv . PLZ HELP!!

  • You batch render an image sequence and composite into a video file in AE. (File->Import->Image(I think, I use premiere) and then you might want to check a check-box to the down left or somthing of the pop-up window. then it doesent only import one stil image, but an image sequence)

  • what version of 3ds max are used here?

  • It's version 9 . Saving to upgrade to 2009 ;)

  • the grid around my ball is square instead of triangle..how do i turn it into triangles..btw i'm on 3ds max9

  • Use a "geosphere" instead of a regular "sphere" ;)

  • thank you!!!!

  • Great job :)

  • rly good instructions ^^

  • yay first one - nice mace i wander what other toys u play with XD
