A. fuck you to NBC for hiring Billy Packer, and B. Fuck you to CBS for thinking it was a good idea to bring him over. America loves its sports but not Billy Packer
St. John's a game of the week? They need to fire Norm Roberts and throw money at someone who can actually coach which will bring victories and the recruits and more winning and, wow, maybe a game of the week! Watching the Johnnies is like watching the Titanic.
NBC was totally the place for college basketball and MLB baseball...wow, what happened? Until they got the NFL back in '06, they had nothing for awhile (sorry, but ND football blows). Amazing to see Ray and Joey Meyer featured so prominently because DePaul basketball (like St. John's and others) has become so irrelevant. I remember this ad. In fact, I attended a DePaul-Georgetown game just before this ad on 12/21/85 that NBC covered. DePaul was bigger than the Bulls. Still have the game on tape
I believe when NBC started to broadcast the NBA around 1990. That is when I noticed NBC fixture, Al McGuire go over to CBS. CBS was doing a lot of college since 1982 but was a monopoly to college around that time.
The peacok had college basketball regular season games, from 1969-93 24 seasons... and the tourney from 69-81 12 seasons... at one point the bird had as it's college broadcast team... annoucer dick enberg anylyst al mcguire and another guy named billy packer.
I remember NBC covered a GEORGETOWN/ST. JOHNS game in 1997 (why, I don't know) and they also covered a double header in Dec. 1994 UMASS/KANSAS & KENTUCKY/UCLA for the WOODEN CLASSIC. Not a bad doubleheader to show.

Nice little NBC Sports jingle from the year I was born -- (even though this was January and I was born in June).
