u can pull out the excess fur, it's normally very loose while they're shedding and doesn't take much to pull out, just grab a hold gently it usually comes right out.

Yes, you do need to brush and maintain the fur of long haired hamsters. They can't clean it good enough themselves. Otherwise it gets matted with bedding, food, feces, etc...and it can cause skin problems. Dolcepeter was probably just taking out the loose clumps of fur, and she had the scissors there for the stuff she couldn't pull out. Later she was just trying to take out a knot by hand. Usually I always just cut them out because it was less of a hassle. But you do need to at least brush them.

1st: you need luke warm water

2nd:hamster shampoo if you dont have you may use a baby shampoo

3rd:after taking a bath get a towel then wrapped him or her for a few min.then unwrapped him or her again.

4th:put 10grams of Chinchilla sand or bathing sand and let them rub it by themselves.(15to20min)

5th:after they are dry put them some hamster powder or for small animal powder.

6th:clean the cage put some new beddings while your hamster is walking but be sure some one's assisting them.

This is what I do to clean my hamsters (There short-haired and don't need to be cleaned but I clean them for hamster shows) I buy some spray from Pets at home in Inverness, then brush my hamsters fur, you can either use a soft tooth brush or a finger brush that you can also buy from pets at home.
